Sustainable Panels with Recycled Materials for Building Applications: Environmental and Acoustic Characterization☆

    Get PDF
Abstract Sound absorption materials structure is generally based on porous synthetic media (rock wool, glass wool, polyurethane, polyester, ect.): they have expensive production processes, important energy consumptions, and high environmental impact. Recycled materials are becoming an interesting alternative, due to their good acoustic behavior, similar to traditional porous materials; they also allow low impact production costs, thanks to the use of wastes derived from other production cycles. This work focuses on the evaluation of the acoustic absorption properties of new panels made of recycled paper and other scrap materials, as wool and nonwoven polyester fabric: different samples were produced and tested by means of impedance tube, according to ISO 10534-2. In order to present the environmental benefits, Life Cycle Assessment was carried out in terms of primary embodied energy and greenhouse gas emissions, considering a "cradle-to-gate" approach. Furthermore, the behavior of innovative absorption materials was investigated in order to improve the acoustic performance of a lecture room, by means of an acoustic simulation software. A comparison with traditional materials was also carried out for both acoustic and environmental aspects. In the simulation model, calibrated by an in-situ experimental campaign of the main acoustic quality indexes (Reverberation Time, Clarity and Definition Indexes, Speech Transmission Index), different acoustic correction solutions were implemented: both the new recycled and traditional panels were applied as wall and ceiling absorbers. The analysis of the acoustic absorption trends, in 100 - 5000 Hz frequencies range, shows that the new materials are suitable as acoustic correction systems, especially the panel composed by waste paper and wool fibers. The LCA analysis results show that, considering the same acoustic performance, the recycled panels allow to reduce the environmental effects and the global production costs

Difficulties with the QPOs Resonance Model

High frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (HFQPOs) have been detected in microquasars and neutron star systems. The resonance model suggested by Kluzniak & Abramowicz (2000) explains twin QPOs as two weakly coupled nonlinear resonant epicyclic modes in the accretion disk. Although this model successfully explains many features of the observed QPOs, it still faces difficulties and shortcomings. Here we summarize the aspects of the theory that remain a puzzle and we briefly discuss likely developments.Comment: To appear in New Astronomy Review, Proceedings of "Jean-Pierre Lasota, X-ray binaries, accretion disks and compact stars" (October 2007); Ed. Exploring Cluster Ellipticals as Cosmological Standard Rods

    Get PDF
We explore the possibility to calibrate massive cluster ellipticals as cosmological standard rods using the Fundamental Plane relation combined with a correction for luminosity evolution. Though cluster ellipticals certainly formed in a complex way, their passive evolution out to redshifts of about 1 indicates that basically all major merging and accretion events took place at higher redshifts. Therefore, a calibration of their luminosity evolution can be attempted. We propose to use the Mgσ-\sigma relation for that purpose because it is independent of distance and cosmology. We discuss a variety of possible caveats, ranging from dynamical evolution to uncertainties in stellar population models and evolution corrections to the presence of age spread. Sources of major random and systematic errors are analysed as well. We apply the described procedure to nine elliptical galaxies in two clusters at z=0.375z=0.375 and derive constraints on the cosmological model. For the best fitting Λ\Lambda-free cosmological model we obtain: qo0.1q_o \approx 0.1, with 90% confidence limits being 0<qo<0.70 < q_o < 0.7 (the lower limit being due to the presence of matter in the Universe). If the inflationary scenario applies (i.e. the Universe has flat geometry), then, for the best fitting model, matter and Λ\Lambda contribute about equally to the critical cosmic density (i.e. ΩmΩΛ0.5\Omega_m \approx \Omega_\Lambda \approx 0.5). With 90% confidence ΩΛ\Omega_\Lambda should be smaller than 0.9.Comment: 21 pages, including 5 eps-figures, Latex, uses aasms4.sty, accepted by ApJ main journa

Optical design teaching by computing graphic methods

    Get PDF
One of the key challenges in the teaching of Optics is that students need to know not only the math of the optical design, but also, and more important, to grasp and understand the optics in a three-dimensional space. Having a clear image of the problem to solve is the first step in order to begin to solve that problem. Therefore to achieve that the students not only must know the equation of refraction law but they have also to understand how the main parameters of this law are interacting among them. This should be a major goal in the teaching course. Optical graphic methods are a valuable tool in this way since they have the advantage of visual information and the accuracy of a computer calculation
