    Visualizations for an Explainable Planning Agent

    In this paper, we report on the visualization capabilities of an Explainable AI Planning (XAIP) agent that can support human in the loop decision making. Imposing transparency and explainability requirements on such agents is especially important in order to establish trust and common ground with the end-to-end automated planning system. Visualizing the agent's internal decision-making processes is a crucial step towards achieving this. This may include externalizing the "brain" of the agent -- starting from its sensory inputs, to progressively higher order decisions made by it in order to drive its planning components. We also show how the planner can bootstrap on the latest techniques in explainable planning to cast plan visualization as a plan explanation problem, and thus provide concise model-based visualization of its plans.     Do assembly rules for bird communities operate in small, fragmented woodlands in an agricultural landscape?

    The favoured state approach sensu Fox (1987) was used to investigate the existence of assembly rules for woodland bird communities in an agricultural landscape. When birds were classified according to gross breeding habitat requirements, year-round resident, .true. woodland species showed an excess of favoured states suggesting a possible assembly rule. There was weaker evidence for a similar assembly rule governed by foraging requirements. This pattern was shown for all woods together, and for most categories of woods, grouped according to size, shape or size and shape together. Summer migrants did not show such patterns, and their arrival appeared to mask any patterns established by year-round resident species. The statistical significance of the excess of favoured states was highest in 1990, when bird population densities were considerably higher than in 1991 and 1992. Interspecific competition appears to be a factor in structuring woodland bird communities within the area sampled. Some implications for the action of these assembly rules on the results of further habitat fragmentation are discussed

    Towards a conceptual framework demonstrating the effectiveness of audiovisual patient descriptions (patient video cases): a review of the current literature

    Background: Technological advances have enabled the widespread use of video cases via web-streaming and online download as an educational medium. The use of real subjects to demonstrate acute pathology should aid the education of health care professionals. However, the methodology by which this effect may be tested is not clear. Methods: We undertook a literature review of major databases, found relevant articles relevant to using patient video cases as educational interventions, extracted the methodologies used and assessed these methods for internal and construct validity. Results: A review of 2532 abstracts revealed 23 studies meeting the inclusion criteria and a final review of 18 of relevance. Medical students were the most commonly studied group (10 articles) with a spread of learner satisfaction, knowledge and behaviour tested. Only two of the studies fulfilled defined criteria on achieving internal and construct validity. The heterogeneity of articles meant it was not possible to perform any meta-analysis. Conclusions: Previous studies have not well classified which facet of training or educational outcome the study is aiming to explore and had poor internal and construct validity. Future research should aim to validate a particular outcome measure, preferably by reproducing previous work rather than adopting new methods. In particular cognitive processing enhancement, demonstrated in a number of the medical student studies, should be tested at a postgraduate level

    Reviewing the adaption of a wellbeing framework for asset management investment analysis on a three waters network

    Water infrastructure world-wide is facing a number of pressures including increasing demand due to population growth and urbanisation, increasing legislative requirements, climate change, and ageing infrastructure. Supporting growth and prosperity across the country require smarter investment decisions to deliver cost-effective and innovative solutions. The focus on investment planning is moving away from the simple economic or risk-based decision to community wellbeing. The New Zealand Treasury has developed a wellbeing framework to guide policy and investment that focuses on improved community outcomes for the nation. The purpose of this framework is to track changes to the wellbeing outcomes over time and improve public policy making, with the ultimate goal of lifting living standards and improving intergenerational wellbeing. This framework, largely based on the OECD wellbeing framework, was adapted for New Zealand (NZ) and includes a stock model to simulate the inter-relationship between investment and wellbeing outcomes. This framework focuses more on providing guidelines around the domains of wellbeing from a macro policy level decision making level, however their linkages to localized infrastructure development are weak. This paper describes a strategy to develop a holistic decision-making framework for three waters (drinking water, wastewater, & stormwater), which include; finding the impact of investment in three waters on communityā€™s wellbeing, conducting performance analysis, and the development of a mathematical model and trade-off model for such investment. The results have suggested that the existing wellbeing framework provides an excellent monitoring framework for water infrastructure, yet to establish inter-relationships between wellbeing factors on a meso-level, a different model needs to be considered

    Analysis of uncertainties in the estimates of nitrous oxide and methane emissions in the UKā€™s greenhouse gas inventory for agriculture

    The UKā€™s greenhouse gas inventory for agriculture uses a model based on the IPCC Tier 1 and Tier 2 26 methods to estimate the emissions of methane and nitrous oxide from agriculture. The inventory 27 calculations are disaggregated at country level (England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland). 28 Before now, no detailed assessment of the uncertainties in the estimates of emissions had been 29 done. We used Monte Carlo simulation to do such an analysis. We collated information on the 30 uncertainties of each of the model inputs. The uncertainties propagate through the model and result 31 in uncertainties in the estimated emissions. Using a sensitivity analysis, we found that in England and 32 Scotland the uncertainty in the emission factor for emissions from N inputs (EF1) affected 33 uncertainty the most, but that in Wales and Northern Ireland, the emission factor for N leaching and 34 runoff (EF5) had greater influence. We showed that if the uncertainty in any one of these emission 35 factors is reduced by 50%, the uncertainty in emissions of nitrous oxide reduces by 10%. The 36 uncertainty in the estimate for the emissions of methane emission factors for enteric fermentation 37 in cows and sheep most affected the uncertainty in methane emissions. When inventories are 38 disaggregated (as that for the UK is) correlation between separate instances of each emission factor 39 will affect the uncertainty in emissions. As more countries move towards inventory models with 40 disaggregation, it is important that the IPCC give firm guidance on this topic

    The dynamics of single spike-evoked adenosine release in the cerebellum

    The purine adenosine is a potent neuromodulator in the brain, with roles in a number of diverse physiological and pathological processes. Modulators such as adenosine are difficult to study as once released they have a diffuse action (which can affect many neurones) and, unlike classical neurotransmitters, have no inotropic receptors. Thus rapid postsynaptic currents (PSCs) mediated by adenosine (equivalent to mPSCs) are not available for study. As a result the mechanisms and properties of adenosine release still remain relatively unclear. We have studied adenosine release evoked by stimulating the parallel fibres in the cerebellum. Using adenosine biosensors combined with deconvolution analysis and mathematical modelling, we have characterised the release dynamics and diffusion of adenosine in unprecedented detail. By partially blocking K+ channels, we were able to release adenosine in response to a single stimulus rather than a train of stimuli. This allowed reliable sub-second release of reproducible quantities of adenosine with stereotypic concentration waveforms that agreed well with predictions of a mathematical model of purine diffusion. We found no evidence for ATP release and thus suggest that adenosine is directly released in response to parallel fibre firing and does not arise from extracellular ATP metabolism. Adenosine release events showed novel short-term dynamics, including facilitated release with paired stimuli at millisecond stimulation intervals but depletion-recovery dynamics with paired stimuli delivered over minute time scales. These results demonstrate rich dynamics for adenosine release that are placed, for the first time, on a quantitative footing and show strong similarity with vesicular exocytosis

    Evidence-based clinical practice guidelines on the management of pain in older people - a summary report.

    OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to develop an update of the evidence-based guidelines for the management of pain in older people. DESIGN: Review of evidence since 2010 using a systematic and consensus approach is performed. RESULTS: Recognition of the type of pain and routine assessment of pain should inform the use of specific environmental, behavioural and pharmacological interventions. Individualised care plans and analgesic protocols for specific clinical situations, patients and health care settings can be developed from these guidelines. CONCLUSION: Management of pain must be considered as an important component of the health care provided to all people, regardless of their chronological age or severity of illness. By clearly outlining areas where evidence is not available, these guidelines may also stimulate further research. To use the recommended therapeutic approaches, clinicians must be familiar with adverse effects of treatment and the potential for drug interactions

    Effects of self-management, education and specific exercises, delivered by health professionals, in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>An education self-management program for people with osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee was designed to be delivered by health professionals, incorporating their knowledge and expertise. Improvement in quality of life, health status and pain in response to this program has previously been demonstrated in an uncontrolled pilot study. To more rigorously test the effectiveness of the program we will undertake a randomised controlled trial of people with OA of the knee offering specific self-administered exercises and education, in accordance with the principles of self-management.</p> <p>Aim: To determine whether an education self management program for subjects with Osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee (OAK program) implemented by health professionals in a primary health care setting can achieve and maintain clinically meaningful improvements compared standard medical management in a control group.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The effects of standard medical management will be compared with the effects of the OAK program in a single-blind randomized study.</p> <p><it>Participants: </it>146 male and female participants with established OA knee will be recruited. Volunteers with coexistent inflammatory joint disease or serious co-morbidities will be excluded.</p> <p><it>Interventions: </it>Participants will be randomized into either intervention or control groups (delayed start). The intervention group will complete the OA knee program and both groups will be followed for 6 months.</p> <p><it>Measurements: </it>Assessments will be at baseline, 8 weeks and 6 months. SF-36, WOMAC and VAS pain questionnaires will be completed. Isometric quadriceps and hamstring strength will be measured using a dynamometer; knee range of movement using a goniometer; and physical function will be determined by a modified timed up and go test. Data will be analysed using repeated measures ANOVA.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>While there is evidence to support the effectiveness of SM programs for people with hypertension, diabetes and asthma, the evidence available for treatment of arthritis remains equivocal. The aim of this study is to determine the effectiveness of a disease specific self-management program for people with OA knee.</p> <p>The study design includes all the important features of a clinical experimental study to minimize bias so the results of the study will provide a high level of evidence. People with OA of the knee have identified pain and problems with daily activities as the most important problems associated with their condition. The outcome measures selected specifically address these issues and have demonstrated validity and are responsive within the range of change expected in response to the intervention. Hence the results of the study will reflect their priorities.</p> <p>The results of the study will provide evidence to guide clinicians and funding bodies seeking to establish priorities regarding the provision of this disease specific program.</p> <p>Trial registration</p> <p>ACTR number: 12607000080426</p
