    Pollen grains in lake sediments: Pollen percentages in surface sediments from southern Michigan

    Pollen in surface sediments from five lakes in southern Michigan shows evidence of differential deposition. In most lakes, pollen from ragweed occurs in a higher ratio to tree pollen in shallow-water sediment than in deep water. Pine and certain herbs with small pollen grains follow the same pattern. One very deep lake is an exception, with the ratio of ragweed to tree pollen highest in deep-water sediment. Pollen from local aquatics and from willow, which grows along the lake shore, is also unevenly distributed, occurring in highest frequencies near the parent plants. Pollen from deciduous trees, however, occurs in similar ratios at all sampling stations within each lake. Deciduous pollen occurs in uniform ratios, also in older sediment, deposited in the early 19th century, when the landscape was still forested.Percentages of deciduous tree pollen (as percent tree pollen) were compared among lakes. Single samples were taken for this purpose from the deepest part of each lake basin. Oak pollen percentages are higher in three lakes in western Washtenaw County than in three lakes in eastern Washtenaw County. This difference reflects a similar difference in present-day vegetation: second-growth oak forests grow near the lakes in the western half of the county, while all but 5% of the area in the eastern part of the county is farmland. (The difference in the ratio of farmland to forestland in the two parts of the county is not reflected clearly in the ratio of herb pollen to tree pollen, because there is so much variation within each lake.) In 140-year-old sediment, on the other hand, tree pollen percentages in the six samples are homogeneous as shown by a chi-square test. The homogeneity in sediment deposited before the forest was cleared is surprising, because witness-tree data from presettlement time show that the frequencies of tree species in the two areas were quite different. Pollen dispersal at that time must have been effective enough, to counteract differences over distances of a few tens of kilometers in the amounts and kinds of pollen produced by the vegetation.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/33513/1/0000011.pd

    Characterisation of a Peripheral Neuropathic Component of the Rat Monoiodoacetate Model of Osteoarthritis

    Joint degeneration observed in the rat monoiodoacetate (MIA) model of osteoarthritis shares many histological features with the clinical condition. The accompanying pain phenotype has seen the model widely used to investigate the pathophysiology of osteoarthritis pain, and for preclinical screening of analgesic compounds. We have investigated the pathophysiological sequellae of MIA used at low (1 mg) or high (2 mg) dose. Intra-articular 2 mg MIA induced expression of ATF-3, a sensitive marker for peripheral neuron stress/injury, in small and large diameter DRG cell profiles principally at levels L4 and 5 (levels predominated by neurones innervating the hindpaw) rather than L3. At the 7 day timepoint, ATF-3 signal was significantly smaller in 1 mg MIA treated animals than in the 2 mg treated group. 2 mg, but not 1 mg, intra-articular MIA was also associated with a significant reduction in intra-epidermal nerve fibre density in plantar hindpaw skin, and produced spinal cord dorsal and ventral horn microgliosis. The 2 mg treatment evoked mechanical pain-related hypersensitivity of the hindpaw that was significantly greater than the 1 mg treatment. MIA treatment produced weight bearing asymmetry and cold hypersensitivity which was similar at both doses. Additionally, while pregabalin significantly reduced deep dorsal horn evoked neuronal responses in animals treated with 2 mg MIA, this effect was much reduced or absent in the 1 mg or sham treated groups. These data demonstrate that intra-articular 2 mg MIA not only produces joint degeneration, but also evokes significant axonal injury to DRG cells including those innervating targets outside of the knee joint such as hindpaw skin. This significant neuropathic component needs to be taken into account when interpreting studies using this model, particularly at doses greater than 1 mg MIA

    The effect of social interactions on tadpole activity and growth in the British anuran amphibians (Bufo bufo, B-calamita, and Rana temporaria)

    Tadpoles of different species of frogs and toads display different tendencies to aggregate. We investigated some of the costs and benefits of aggregating in three British species by examining their behavioural responses to the presence of conspecifics, and by monitoring the performance of tadpoles under different levels of social interaction with other individuals. The common toad (Bufo bufo), an aggregating species, displayed higher levels of activity than the natterjack toad (B. calamita) and common frog (Rana temporaria), two species that form aggregations less frequently. Moreover, out of the three species, only B. bufo increased activity in the presence of conspecifics. In all three species, increased interaction between individuals resulted in increased variation in size. However, average growth rate was affected only in B. bufo, which grew faster when raised in isolation and not interacting with other individuals. Under certain conditions intraspecific competition therefore seems to tie more important than social facilitation, but may lead to average size at metamorphosis being larger within the population. The consequences of intraspecific competition within aggregations mag therefore be different for individuals and populations

    Loneliness, Emotional Autonomy and Motivation for Solitary Behavior During Adolescence

    Loneliness is a crucial part of people’s experience in the transition to adulthood. Several developmental tasks, such as the separation/individuation process and exploration in the interpersonal domains connected with identity acquisition, lead adolescents to seek solitary experiences. Adolescents are involved in the redefinition of their relationships with parents and peers, moving away from their dependence on the family. The aim of the present study is to assess the effects of two aspects of autonomy: emotional autonomy (separation and detachment) and autonomous motivation for solitary behavior, on parent- and peer-related loneliness during adolescence. The participants were 977 adolescents (447 males and 530 females), aged between 14 and 20 years (M = 16.31; SD = 1.57), recruited from Italian high schools. The Italian versions of the Loneliness and Aloneness Scale for Children and Adolescents, of the Emotional Autonomy Scale and of the Frequency of and Autonomy for Solitary and Interpersonal Behavior scale were administered to each participant. Structural equation models and path analysis indicate the effects of separation–individuation process dimensions both on parent- and peer-related loneliness. Specific differences emerge between the two dimensions of loneliness. Peer-related loneliness is more influenced by autonomous motivation than is parent-related loneliness, and controlled motivation mediates its relationship with separation. The relationships among the constructs are discussed in the light of the separation–individuation process and with regard to the prevention of maladaptive outcomes

    Schooling and swimming behaviors of Hyla semilineata tadpoles (Anura, Hylidae)

    The schooling behavior of Hyla semilineata Spix, 1824 tadpoles is described. Experiments were carried out both in the natural environment and under controlled conditions to quantify the constant movement of these tadpoles. Bullfrog tadpoles (Rana catesbeiana Shaw, 1802), similar in size to the H. semilineata larvae, were used as controls in the experiments. Hyla semilineata tadpoles remained stationary for one sixth of the time that the bullfrog tadpoles did and the number of individuals of H. semilineata moving at any given moment was about seven times greater. The schooling behavior and constant swimming behavior of these tadpoles may enhance the effect of their warning coloration
