    Separation of Carbon from Deinking Waste by Means of Flotation

    The technique of froth flotation, as practiced in the separation of mineral ores, has been applied to the separation of carbon black from the deinking waste of the paper industry. On the theory that carbon black (from ink) has a positive charge in water, and clay and cellulose fibers have negative charges in water, experiments were of two types. First, it was attempted to float the carbon from the clay and cellulose fibers. Second, it was attempted to float the clay and cellulose fibers from the carbon. Several possible formulas were found for separating carbon black from deinking waste. Favorable results were obtained in both types of experiments

The Renaissance had spread from sunny Italy to her European neighbors, opening to the people new avenues of thought and action. Having been hitherto under restraint, they sought to break away from the authority that galled them. Wickliffe had stirred the English people with his utterances against the arrogance of the popes, declaring them to be antichrist (1377). He declared that Christ was the King of the Church. He denied the right of the popes to English territory. His teachings spread to the continent, and John Huss, in Bohemia (1412), demanded a reconstruction of the Church, after a thorough search of Holy Writ for the actual bases of Christianity, the Scriptures to be used as final authority. He insisted that an honest effort be made to satisfy all the requirements of soul and conscience. He and others found many reasons why such demands should be made. The immorality and worldliness of the popes had again and again scandalized the Old World. The clergy had become a separate caste, making and administering their own laws. Exempt from lay interference, they could escape punishment for the most flagrant violations of state law. Yet they would not exempt the laity from the laws of the Church, even though; the power they now had and the privileges they enjoyed had originally come from the people, whom they now oppressed

    The feasibility of applying multilevel functional decomposition and optimization techniques to conceptual design of advanced fighter aircraft was investigated. Applying the functional decomposition techniques to the conceptual design phase appears to be feasible. The initial implementation of the modified design process will optimize wing design variables. A hybrid approach, combining functional decomposition techniques for generation of aerodynamic and mass properties linear sensitivity derivatives with existing techniques for sizing mission performance and optimization, is proposed

    Aunque las estructuras trópicas están generalmente ligadas a materiales verbales o visuales propios de la cultura, los tropos suelen haber sido considerados unos instrumentos primarios en la producción de la música. Este artículo trata de mostrar cómo los tropos musicales afectan a la interpretación de los materiales musicales por los oyentes. Se expone como, en la música, los tropos corresponden a las principales funciones semióticas señaladas por la lingüística tradicional: icónica, indéxica y simbólica. Utilizando materiales de audio, este ensayo explora algunos de estos tropos musicales tomados de la música tradicional asiática y nativa americana, así como de la música del arte occidental del periodo barroco, clásico y moderno. Se muestra que las funciones icónicas incluyen estructuras musicales onomatopéyicas. Mientras las funciones indéxicas implican imitación interna, repetición y reafirmación, las funciones simbólicas suponen el uso de materiales sonoros que evocan imágenes o instituciones culturales específicas. Finalmente, el artículo sugiere que los tropos lingüísticos, visuales y musicales están interconectados, reforzándose mutuamente, y pueden proceder del mismo conjunto de funciones cognitivas que caracteriza a la cultura humana.Although tropic structures are generally linked to verbal or visual materials in culture, tropes have long been understood as primary devices in the production of music. This paper seeks to show how musical tropes affect the interpretation of musical materials by listeners. Tropes in music will be shown to correspond to the principal semiotic functions observed in traditional linguistics: iconic, indexical and symbolic. Using audio materials, this essay explore a number of these musical tropes taken from traditional Asian and Native American music; and Western art music from Baroque, Classical and modern periods. Iconic functions are shown to include onomatopoeic musical structures. Indexical functions involve internal imitation, repetition and restatement, and symbolic functions involve the use of sound materials evocative of specific cultural images or institutions. The paper finally suggests that linguistic, visual and musical tropes are interconnected, mutually reinforcing, and may stem from the same set of cognitive functions in human culture

    Stressed detector arrays for airborne astronomy

    The development of stressed Ge:Ga detector arrays for far-infrared astronomy from the Kuiper Airborne Observatory (KAO) is discussed. Researchers successfully constructed and used a three channel detector array on five flights from the KAO, and have conducted laboratory tests of a two-dimensional, 25 elements (5x5) detector array. Each element of the three element array performs as well as the researchers' best single channel detector, as do the tested elements of the 25 channel system. Some of the exciting new science possible with far-infrared detector arrays is also discussed

    Cryogenic light detectors with enhanced performance for rare events physics

    We have developed and tested a new way of coupling bolometric light detectors to scintillating crystal bolometers based upon simply resting the light detector on the crystal surface, held in position only by gravity. This straightforward mounting results in three important improvements: (1) it decreases the amount of non-active materials needed to assemble the detector, (2) it substantially increases the light collection efficiency by minimizing the light losses induced by the mounting structure, and (3) it enhances the thermal signal induced in the light detector thanks to the extremely weak thermal link to the thermal bath. We tested this new technique with a 16 cm2^2 Ge light detector with thermistor readout sitting on the surface of a large TeO2_2 bolometer. The light collection efficiency was increased by greater than 50\% compared to previously tested alternative mountings. We obtained a baseline energy resolution on the light detector of 20~eV RMS that, together with increased light collection, enabled us to obtain the best α\alpha vs β/γ\beta/\gamma discrimination ever obtained with massive TeO2_2 crystals. At the same time we achieved rise and decay times of 0.8 and 1.6 ms, respectively. This superb performance meets all of the requirements for the CUPID (CUORE Upgrade with Particle IDentification) experiment, which is a 1-ton scintillating bolometer follow up to CUORE.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

    M.I.N.G., Mars Investment for a New Generation: Robotic construction of a permanently manned Mars base

    A basic procedure for robotically constructing a manned Mars base is outlined. The research procedure was divided into three areas: environment, robotics, and habitat. The base as designed will consist of these components: two power plants, communication facilities, a habitat complex, and a hangar, a garage, recreation and manufacturing facilities. The power plants will be self-contained nuclear fission reactors placed approx. 1 km from the base for safety considerations. The base communication system will use a combination of orbiting satellites and surface relay stations. This system is necessary for robotic contact with Phobos and any future communication requirements. The habitat complex will consist of six self-contained modules: core, biosphere, science, living quarters, galley/storage, and a sick bay which will be brought from Phobos. The complex will be set into an excavated hole and covered with approximately 0.5 m of sandbags to provide radiation protection for the astronauts. The recreation, hangar, garage, and manufacturing facilities will each be transformed from the four one-way landers. The complete complex will be built by autonomous, artificially intelligent robots. Robots incorporated into the design are as follows: Large Modular Construction Robots with detachable arms capable of large scale construction activities; Small Maneuverable Robotic Servicers capable of performing delicate tasks normally requiring a suited astronaut; and a trailer vehicle with modular type attachments to complete specific tasks; and finally, Mobile Autonomous Rechargeable Transporters capable of transferring air and water from the manufacturing facility to the habitat complex
