Enhanced gravity-wave activity and interhemispheric coupling during the MaCWAVE/MIDAS northern summer program 2002
We present new sensitivity experiments that link observed anomalies of the mesosphere and lower thermosphere at high latitudes during the MaCWAVE/MIDAS summer program 2002 to enhanced planetary Rossby-wave activity in the austral winter troposphere.
We employ the same general concept of a GCM having simplified representations of radiative and latent heating as in a previous study by Becker et al. (2004). In the present version, however, the model includes no gravity wave (GW) parameterization. Instead we employ a high vertical and a moderate horizontal resolution in order to describe GW effects explicitly. This is supported by advanced, nonlinear momentum diffusion schemes that allow for a self-consistent generation of inertia and mid-frequency GWs in the lower atmosphere, their vertical propagation into the mesosphere and lower thermosphere, and their subsequent dissipation which is induced by prescribed horizontal and vertical mixing lengths as functions of height.
The main anomalies in northern summer 2002 consist of higher temperatures than usual above 82 km, an anomalous eastward mean zonal wind between 70 and 90 km, an altered meridional flow, enhanced turbulent dissipation below 80 km, and enhanced temperature variations associated with GWs. These signals are all reasonably described by differences between two long-integration perpetual model runs, one with normal July conditions, and another run with modified latent heating in the tropics and Southern Hemisphere to mimic conditions that correspond to the unusual austral winter 2002. The model response to the enhanced winter hemisphere Rossby-wave activity has resulted in both an interhemispheric coupling through a downward shift of the GW-driven branch of the residual circulation and an increased GW activity at high summer latitudes. Thus a quantitative explanation of the dynamical state of the northern mesosphere and lower thermosphere during June-August 2002 requires an enhanced Lorenz energy cycle and correspondingly enhanced GW sources in the troposphere, which in the model show up in both hemispheres
Galois theory and Lubin-Tate cochains on classifying spaces
We consider brave new cochain extensions F(BG +,R) â F(EG +,R), where R is either a Lubin-Tate spectrum E n or the related 2-periodic Morava K-theory K n , and G is a finite group. When R is an Eilenberg-Mac Lane spectrum, in some good cases such an extension is a G-Galois extension in the sense of John Rognes, but not always faithful. We prove that for E n and K n these extensions are always faithful in the K n local category. However, for a cyclic p-group C p r, the cochain extension F(BC p r +,E n ) â F(EC p r +, E n ) is not a Galois extension because it ramifies. As a consequence, it follows that the E n -theory Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence for G and BG does not always converge to its expected target

Structure and Anti-TB Activity of Trachylobanes from the Liverwort Jungermannia exsertifolia ssp. cordifolia
In the critical search for new antituberculosis lead compounds, bryophytes represent a largely untapped resource of chemically diverse structures. From the liverwort Jungermannia exsertifolia subsp. cordifolia, 11 new trachylobane diterpene derivatives, as well as three known compounds, were isolated. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic means, and full 1H NMR spin analysis of one model compound confirmed the relative configurational assignments of the congeners. Four of the isolates exhibited noticeable activity against virulent Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv with minimal inhibitory concentrations of 61â24 ÎŒg/mL. This finding suggests that bryophytes in general and trachylobanes in particular deserve further attention in the search for new antimycobacterial leads
Guiding the Way to Gamma-Ray Sources: X-ray Studies of Supernova Remnants
Supernova remnants have long been suggested as a class of potential
counterparts to unidentified gamma-ray sources. The mechanisms by which such
gamma-rays can arise may include emission from a pulsar associated with a
remnant, or a variety of processes associated with energetic particles
accelerated by the SNR shock. Imaging and spectral observations in the X-ray
band can be used to identify properties of the remnants that lead to gamma-ray
emission, including the presence of pulsar-driven nebulae, nonthermal X-ray
emission from the SNR shells, and the interaction of SNRs with dense

Pulsar Timing and its Application for Navigation and Gravitational Wave Detection
Pulsars are natural cosmic clocks. On long timescales they rival the
precision of terrestrial atomic clocks. Using a technique called pulsar timing,
the exact measurement of pulse arrival times allows a number of applications,
ranging from testing theories of gravity to detecting gravitational waves. Also
an external reference system suitable for autonomous space navigation can be
defined by pulsars, using them as natural navigation beacons, not unlike the
use of GPS satellites for navigation on Earth. By comparing pulse arrival times
measured on-board a spacecraft with predicted pulse arrivals at a reference
location (e.g. the solar system barycenter), the spacecraft position can be
determined autonomously and with high accuracy everywhere in the solar system
and beyond. We describe the unique properties of pulsars that suggest that such
a navigation system will certainly have its application in future astronautics.
We also describe the on-going experiments to use the clock-like nature of
pulsars to "construct" a galactic-sized gravitational wave detector for
low-frequency (f_GW ~1E-9 - 1E-7 Hz) gravitational waves. We present the

Alteration in the plasma concentration of a DAAO inhibitor, 3-methylpyrazole-5-carboxylic acid, in the ketamine-treated rats and the influence on the pharmacokinetics of plasma d-tryptophan
A determination method for 3-methylpyrazole-5-carboxylic acid (MPC), an inhibitor of d-amino acid oxidase (DAAO), in rat plasma was developed by using high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). The structural isomer of MPC, 3-methylpyrazole-4-carboxylic acid, was used as an internal standard, and the intra- and inter-day accuracies and precisions were satisfactory for the determination of plasma MPC
A theoretical and empirical investigation of nutritional label use
Due in part to increasing diet-related health problems caused, among others, by obesity, nutritional labelling has been considered important, mainly because it can provide consumers with information that can be used to make informed and healthier food choices. Several studies have focused on the empirical perspective of nutritional label use. None of these studies, however, have focused on developing a theoretical economic model that would adequately describe nutritional label use based on a utility theoretic framework. We attempt to fill this void by developing a simple theoretical model of nutritional label use, incorporating the time a consumer spends reading labels as part of the food choice process. The demand equations of the model are then empirically tested. Results suggest the significant role of several variables that flow directly from the model which, to our knowledge, have not been used in any previous empirical work
Social Entrepreneurship and Broader Theories: Shedding New Light on the âBigger Pictureâ
This article documents the results of a research workshop bringing together six perspectives on social entrepreneurship. The idea was to challenge existing concepts of the economy, the firm, and entrepreneurship in order to shed new light on social entrepreneurship and on our existing theoretical frameworks. The first two contributions use a macro-perspective and discuss the notion of adaptive societies and the tragedies of disharmonization, respectively. Taking a management perspective, the next two focus on the limits of conventional assumptions in management theory, particularly human capital theory and resource-based view. The final two contributions follow an entrepreneurship perspective highlighting the usefulness of mobilization theory and the business model lens to social entrepreneurship. Despite this diversity, all contributions share the fact that they challenge narrow definitions of the unit of analysis in social entrepreneurship; they illustrate the aspect of social embeddedness, and they argue for an open-but-disciplined diversity of theories in social entrepreneurship research
