The population of deformed bands in Cr by emission of Be from the S + Mg reaction
Using particle- coincidences we have studied the population of final
states after the emission of 2 -particles and of Be in nuclei
formed in S+Mg reactions at an energy of . The data were obtained in a setup
consisting of the GASP -ray detection array and the multidetector array
ISIS. Particle identification is obtained from the E and E signals of
the ISIS silicon detector telescopes, the Be being identified by the
instantaneous pile up of the E and E pulses. -ray decays of the
Cr nucleus are identified with coincidences set on 2 -particles
and on Be. Some transitions of the side-band with show
stronger population for Be emission relative to that of 2
-particles (by a factor ). This observation is interpreted as
due to an enhanced emission of Be into a more deformed nucleus.
Calculations based on the extended Hauser-Feshbach compound decay formalism
confirm this observation quantitatively.Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures accepted for publication in J. Phys.
Oncologic Emergencies
This article is made available for unrestricted research re-use and secondary analysis in any form or by any means with acknowledgement of the original source. These permissions are granted for the duration of the World Health Organization (WHO) declaration of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. It has been estimated that genitourinary malignancies will account for 25% of new cancer diagnoses in the United States in 2005 (Jemal et al. 2005). While the incidence of many of these malignancies has increased over the past two decades, the mortality rates appear to be decreasing. Early cancer detection combined with improvements in surgical and nonsurgical oncologic therapy account for these trends. Although not common, newly diagnosed cancer patients occasionally present in an emergent, life-threatening manner that warrants immediate medical or surgical intervention. As the prevalence of genitourinary malignancies continues to expand, additional patients can be expected to develop disease or treatment-related complications. This chapter will serve to review the diagnosis and management of oncologic emergencies as they pertain to the urologist
Binary reaction decays from 24Mg+12C
Charged particle and gamma decays in 24Mg* are investigated for excitation
energies where quasimolecular resonances appear in 12C+12C collisions. Various
theoretical predictions for the occurence of superdeformed and hyperdeformed
bands associated with resonance structures with low spin are discussed within
the measured 24Mg* excitation energy region. The inverse kinematics reaction
24Mg+12C is studied at E_lab(24Mg) = 130 MeV, an energy which enables the
population of 24Mg states decaying into 12C+12C resonant break-up states.
Exclusive data were collected with the Binary Reaction Spectrometer in
coincidence with EUROBALL IV installed at the VIVITRON Tandem facility at
Strasbourg. Specific structures with large deformation were selectively
populated in binary reactions and their associated gamma decays studied.
Coincident events associated with inelastic and alpha-transfer channels have
been selected by choosing the excitation energy or the entry point via the
two-body Q-values. The analysis of the binary reaction channels is presented
with a particular emphasis on 24Mg-gamma, 20Ne-gamma and 16O-gamma
coincidences. New information (spin and branching ratios) is deduced on
high-energy states in 24Mg and 16O, respectively.Comment: 27 pages, 8 figures, 1 tabl
Pattern languages in HCI: A critical review
This article presents a critical review of patterns and pattern languages in human-computer interaction (HCI). In recent years, patterns and pattern languages have received considerable attention in HCI for their potential as a means for developing and communicating information and knowledge to support good design. This review examines the background to patterns and pattern languages in HCI, and seeks to locate pattern languages in relation to other approaches to interaction design. The review explores four key issues: What is a pattern? What is a pattern language? How are patterns and pattern languages used? and How are values reflected in the pattern-based approach to design? Following on from the review, a future research agenda is proposed for patterns and pattern languages in HCI
Role of unstable periodic orbits in phase transitions of coupled map lattices
The thermodynamic formalism for dynamical systems with many degrees of
freedom is extended to deal with time averages and fluctuations of some
macroscopic quantity along typical orbits, and applied to coupled map lattices
exhibiting phase transitions. Thereby, it turns out that a seed of phase
transition is embedded as an anomalous distribution of unstable periodic
orbits, which appears as a so-called q-phase transition in the spatio-temporal
configuration space. This intimate relation between phase transitions and
q-phase transitions leads to one natural way of defining transitions and their
order in extended chaotic systems. Furthermore, a basis is obtained on which we
can treat locally introduced control parameters as macroscopic ``temperature''
in some cases involved with phase transitions.Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures; further explanation and 2 figures are added

Quantum trajectory phase transitions in the micromaser
We study the dynamics of the single atom maser, or micromaser, by means of
the recently introduced method of thermodynamics of quantum jump trajectories.
We find that the dynamics of the micromaser displays multiple space-time phase
transitions, i.e., phase transitions in ensembles of quantum jump trajectories.
This rich dynamical phase structure becomes apparent when trajectories are
classified by dynamical observables that quantify dynamical activity, such as
the number of atoms that have changed state while traversing the cavity. The
space-time transitions can be either first-order or continuous, and are
controlled not just by standard parameters of the micromaser but also by
non-equilibrium "counting" fields. We discuss how the dynamical phase behavior
relates to the better known stationary state properties of the micromaser.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure
Global communication part 1: the use of apparel CAD technology
Trends needed for improved communication systems, through the development of future computer-aided design technology (CAD) applications, is a theme that has received attention due to its perceived benefits in improving global supply chain efficiencies. This article discusses the developments of both 2D and 3D computer-aided design capabilities, found within global fashion supply chain relationships and environments. Major characteristics identified within the data suggest that CAD/CAM technology appears to be improving; however, evidence also suggest a plateau effect, which is accrediting forced profits towards information technology manufactures, and arguably compromising the industry's competitive advantage. Nevertheless, 2D CAD increases communication speed; whereas 3D human interaction technology is seen to be evolving slowly and questionably with limited success. The article discusses the findings and also presents the issues regarding human interaction; technology education; and individual communication enhancements using technology processes. These are still prevalent topics for the future developments of global strategy and cultural communication amalgamation
Early assessment of first year height data from five Acacia mearnsii (black wattle) sub populations in South Africa using REML/BLUP.
Recent research has shown, Acacia mearnsii (black wattle) to be a source of high quality pulp. This led to a change in the emphasis in the breeding programme at the Institute for Commercial Forestry Research, from improving bark yield and quality, to improving timber yield and quality while maintaining an acceptable bark quality. A Multiple Population Breeding Strategy was implemented to cater for these changes. Five sub-populations were established across different sites in KwaZulu- Natal and were determined by origin of seed. Each sub-population was established as a progeny trial with a seedling seed orchard adjacent to it. The management of the seed orchards will be determined according to the performance of the families within the progeny trials. This paper reports on the first year height measurements taken from the five sub-populations. The intention of this paper is not to base any selections from this data but rather to establish a set of analyses using REML/BLUP which will be used for future data analysis. This will also allow for future assessment of age-age correlations for the various traits being assessed and provide an appropriate decision-making tool, for selecting individuals for future generations
Extended Hauser-Feshbach Method for Statistical Binary-Decay of Light-Mass Systems
An Extended Hauser-Feshbach Method (EHFM) is developed for light heavy-ion
fusion reactions in order to provide a detailed analysis of all the possible
decay channels by including explicitly the fusion-fission phase-space in the
description of the cascade chain. The mass-asymmetric fission component is
considered as a complex-fragment binary-decay which can be treated in the same
way as the light-particle evaporation from the compound nucleus in
statistical-model calculations. The method of the phase-space integrations for
the binary-decay is an extension of the usual Hauser-Feshbach formalism to be
applied to the mass-symmetric fission part. The EHFM calculations include
ground-state binding energies and discrete levels in the low excitation-energy
regions which are essential for an accurate evaluation of the phase-space
integrations of the complex-fragment emission (fission). In the present
calculations, EHFM is applied to the first-chance binary-decay by assuming that
the second-chance fission decay is negligible. In a similar manner to the
description of the fusion-evaporation process, the usual cascade calculation of
light-particle emission from the highly excited complex fragments is applied.
This complete calculation is then defined as EHFM+CASCADE. Calculated
quantities such as charge-, mass- and kinetic-energy distributions are compared
with inclusive and/or exclusive data for the S+Mg and
Cl+C reactions which have been selected as typical examples.
Finally, the missing charge distributions extracted from exclusive measurements
are also successfully compared with the EHFM+CASCADE predictions.Comment: 34 pages, 6 Figures available upon request, Phys. Rev. C (to be
