John Donne's Double Vision : Basic Dualities in the Sermon Literature
This thesis is concerned with establishing the basis for evaluating John Donne's sermon literature as a thematic whole. In order to demonstrate this thematic unity and continuity, this study shows how Donne employes several bodies of imagery which reflect his double vision of man and sin and provide the basis for discussing the basic dualities in the bulk of Donne's 160 extant sermons
Electrostatic fluctuations in cavities within polar liquids and thermodynamics of polar solvation
We present the results of numerical simulations of fluctuations of the
electrostatic potential and electric field inside cavities created in the fluid
of dipolar hard spheres. We found that the thermodynamics of polar solvation
dramatically changes its regime when the cavity size becomes about 4-5 times
larger than the size of the liquid particle. The range of small cavities can be
reasonably understood within the framework of current solvation models. On the
contrary, the regime of large cavities is characterized by a significant
softening of the cavity interface resulting in a decay of the fluctuation
variances with the cavity size much faster than anticipated by both the
continuum electrostatics and microscopic theories. For instance, the variance
of potential decays with the cavity size approximately as
instead of the scaling expected from standard electrostatics. Our
results suggest that cores of non-polar molecular assemblies in polar liquids
lose solvation strength much faster than is traditionally anticipated.Comment: 10 pp, 10 fig
"Ordinary, the same as anywhere else": notes on the management of spoiled identity in 'marginal' middle class neighbourhoods
Urban sociologists are becoming increasingly interested in neighbourhood as a source of middle-class identity. Particular emphasis is currently being given to two types of middle-class neighbourhood; gentrified urban neighbourhoods of ‘distinction’ and inconspicuous ‘suburban landscapes of privilege’. However, there has been a dearth of work on ‘marginal’ middle-class neighbourhoods that are similarly ‘inconspicuous’ rather than distinctive, but less exclusive, thus containing sources of ‘spoiled identity’. This article draws on data gathered from two ‘marginal’ middleclass neighbourhoods that contained a particular source of ‘spoiled identity’: social renters. Urban sociological analyses of neighbour responses to these situations highlight a process of dis-identification with the maligned object, which exacerbates neighbour differences. Our analysis of data from the ‘marginal’ middle-class neighbourhoods suggests something entirely different and Goffmanesque. This entailed the management of spoiled identity, which emphasized similarities rather than differences between neighbours.</p
Molecular clouds in the center of M81
We investigate the molecular gas content and the excitation and fragmentation
properties in the central region of the spiral galaxy Messier 81 in both the
^{12}CO(1-0) and ^{12}CO(2-1) transitions. We have recently observed the two
transitions of CO in the M~81 center with A, B, and HERA receivers of the IRAM
30-m telescope. We find no CO emission in the inner 300 pc and a weak
molecular gas clump structure at a distance of around 460 pc from the nucleus.
Observations of the first two CO transitions allowed us to compute the line
ratio, and the average I_{21}/I_{10} ratio is 0.68 for the M~81 center. This
low value, atypical both of the galactic nuclei of spiral galaxies and of
interacting systems, is probably associated to diffuse gas with molecular
hydrogen density that is not high enough to excite the CO molecules. After
analyzing the clumping properties of the molecular gas in detail, we identify
very massive giant molecular associations (GMAs) in CO(2-1) emission with
masses of 10 M and diameters of 250 pc. The deduced
N(H_{2})/I_{CO} ratio for the individually resolved GMAs, assumed to be
virialized, is a factor of 15 higher than the \textit{standard} Galactic
value, showing - as suspected - that the X ratio departs significantly from the

Comfort radicalism and NEETs: a conservative praxis
Young people who are not in education, employment or training (NEET) are construed by policy makers as a pressing problem about which something should be done. Such young people's lack of employment is thought to pose difficulties for wider society in relation to social cohesion and inclusion and it is feared that they will become a 'lost generation'. This paper(1) draws upon English research, seeking to historicise the debate whilst acknowledging that these issues have a much wider purchase. The notion of NEETs rests alongside longstanding concerns of the English state and middle classes, addressing unruly male working class youth as well as the moral turpitude of working class girls. Waged labour and domesticity are seen as a means to integrate such groups into society thereby generating social cohesion. The paper places the debate within it socio-economic context and draws on theorisations of cognitive capitalism, Italian workerism, as well as emerging theories of antiwork to analyse these. It concludes by arguing that ‘radical’ approaches to NEETs that point towards inequities embedded in the social structure and call for social democratic solutions veer towards a form of comfort radicalism. Such approaches leave in place the dominance of capitalist relations as well as productivist orientations that celebrate waged labour
Interplay between geometry and flow distribution in an airway tree
Uniform fluid flow distribution in a symmetric volume can be realized through
a symmetric branched tree. It is shown here, however, that the flow
partitioning can be highly sensitive to deviations from exact symmetry if
inertial effects are present. This is found by direct numerical simulation of
the Navier-Stokes equations in a 3D tree geometry. The flow asymmetry is
quantified and found to depend on the Reynolds number. Moreover, for a given
Reynolds number, we show that the flow distribution depends on the aspect ratio
of the branching elements as well as their angular arrangement. Our results
indicate that physiological variability should be severely restricted in order
to ensure uniform fluid distribution in a tree. This study suggests that any
non-uniformity in the air flow distribution in human lungs should be influenced
by the respiratory conditions, rest or hard exercise
Thermodynamics of Na_8 and Na_{20} clusters studied with ab-initio electronic structure methods
We study the thermodynamics of Na_8 and Na_{20} clusters using
multiple-histogram methods and an ab initio treatment of the valence electrons
within density functional theory. We consider the influence of various electron
kinetic-energy functionals and pseudopotentials on the canonical ionic specific
heats. The results for all models we consider show qualitative similarities,
but also significant temperature shifts from model to model of peaks and other
features in the specific-heat curves. The use of phenomenological
pseudopotentials shifts the melting peak substantially (~ 50--100 K) when
compared to ab-initio results. It is argued that the choice of a good
pseudopotential and use of better electronic kinetic-energy functionals has the
potential for performing large time scale and large sized thermodynamical

Inhibited Personality Temperaments Translated Through Enhanced Avoidance and Associative Learning Increase Vulnerability for PTSD
Although many individuals who experience a trauma go on to develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), the rate of PTSD following trauma is only about 15–24%. There must be some pre-existing conditions that impart increased vulnerability to some individuals and not others. Diathesis models of PTSD theorize that pre-existing vulnerabilities interact with traumatic experiences to produce psychopathology. Recent work has indicated that personality factors such as behavioral inhibition (BI), harm avoidance (HA), and distressed (Type D) personality are vulnerability factors for the development of PTSD and anxiety disorders. These personality temperaments produce enhanced acquisition or maintenance of associations, especially avoidance, which is a criterion symptom of PTSD. In this review, we highlight the evidence for a relationship between these personality types and enhanced avoidance and associative learning, which may increase risk for the development of PTSD. First, we provide the evidence confirming a relationship among BI, HA, distressed (Type D) personality, and PTSD. Second, we present recent findings that BI is associated with enhanced avoidance learning in both humans and animal models. Third, we will review evidence that BI is also associated with enhanced eyeblink conditioning in both humans and animal models. Overall, data from both humans and animals suggest that these personality traits promote enhanced avoidance and associative learning, as well as slowing of extinction in some training protocols, which all support the learning diathesis model. These findings of enhanced learning in vulnerable individuals can be used to develop objective behavioral measures to pre-identify individuals who are more at risk for development of PTSD following traumatic events, allowing for early (possibly preventative) intervention, as well as suggesting possible therapies for PTSD targeted on remediating avoidance or associative learning. Future work should explore the neural substrates of enhanced avoidance and associative learning for behaviorally inhibited individuals in both the animal model and human participants
Detecting the orientation of magnetic fields in galaxy clusters
Clusters of galaxies, filled with hot magnetized plasma, are the largest
bound objects in existence and an important touchstone in understanding the
formation of structures in our Universe. In such clusters, thermal conduction
follows field lines, so magnetic fields strongly shape the cluster's thermal
history; that some have not since cooled and collapsed is a mystery. In a
seemingly unrelated puzzle, recent observations of Virgo cluster spiral
galaxies imply ridges of strong, coherent magnetic fields offset from their
centre. Here we demonstrate, using three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamical
simulations, that such ridges are easily explained by galaxies sweeping up
field lines as they orbit inside the cluster. This magnetic drape is then lit
up with cosmic rays from the galaxies' stars, generating coherent polarized
emission at the galaxies' leading edges. This immediately presents a technique
for probing local orientations and characteristic length scales of cluster
magnetic fields. The first application of this technique, mapping the field of
the Virgo cluster, gives a startling result: outside a central region, the
magnetic field is preferentially oriented radially as predicted by the
magnetothermal instability. Our results strongly suggest a mechanism for
maintaining some clusters in a 'non-cooling-core' state.Comment: 48 pages, 21 figures, revised version to match published article in
