    Note on Scalar Fields Non-Minimally Coupled to (2+1)-Gravity

    Scalar fields non--minimally coupled to (2+1)-gravity, in the presence of cosmological constant term, are considered. Non-minimal couplings are described by the term ζRΚ2\zeta R \Psi^2 in the Lagrangian. Within a class of static circularly symmetric space-times, it is shown that the only existing physically relevant solutions are the anti-de Sitter space-time for ζ=0\zeta=0, and the Martinez-Zanelli black hole for ζ=1/8\zeta=1/8. We obtain also two new solutions with non-trivial scalar field, for ζ=1/6\zeta=1/6 and ζ=1/8\zeta=1/8 respectively, nevertheless, the corresponding space-times can be reduced, via coordinate transformations, to the standard anti-de Sitter space.Comment: 5 pages, RevTe

    Intensive care in cancer patients in the age of immunotherapy and molecular therapies: SEOM-SEMICYUC’s commitment.

    Cancer patients comprise a vulnerable collective exposed to numerous, serious risks, beyond the cancer itself. In recent years, these individuals’ prognosis has improved substantially thanks to several advances, such as immunotherapy, targeted molecular therapies, surgical techniques, or developments in support treatment. This coincides with the prolonged survival of oncological patients hospitalized in the ICU for critical complications. Thus, the time has come to revisit intensive care support for these patients, which poses new professional as well as organizational challenges. An agreement was therefore signed in 2017 between SEOM and SEMICYUC with the aim of improving the quality of care of cancer patients with critical complications. It seeks to aid in decision-making, standardize criteria, decrease subjectivity, generate channels of communication, and delve deeper into the ethical and scientific aspects of these situations. This document sets forth the most important reasons that have led us to undertake this initiative.pre-print653 K

    Influence of Football Match-Play on Isometric Knee Flexion Strength and Passive Hip Flexion Range of Motion in Football Referees and Assistant Referees.

    The aim of this study was to examine the acute effect of officiating a football (soccer) match on isometric knee flexion strength and passive hip flexion range-of-motion (ROM) in referees and assistant football referees. Twelve referees (25.3 ± 3.3 years) and twenty-three assistant referees (25.1 ± 4.8 years) underwent measurements on isometric knee flexion strength and passive hip flexion ROM before and after officiating an official football match. Referees’ and assistant referees’ running patterns were monitored during the match using GPS technology. In comparison to pre-match values, referees reduced their isometric knee flexion strength (−12.36%, p = 0.046, Effect size [ES] = −0.36) in the non-dominant limb, while no significant differences were reported in the dominant limb (−0.75%, p = 0.833, ES = −0.02). No effect of the match was found in hip flexion ROM values in dominant (−4.78%, p = 0.102, ES = −0.15) and non-dominant limb (5.54%, p = 0.544, ES = 0.19). In assistant referees, the pre-to-post-match changes in isometric knee flexion strength (dominant limb −3.10%, p = 0.323, ES = −0.13; non-dominant limb −2.18%, p = 0.980, ES= 0.00) and hip flexion ROM (dominant limb 1.90% p = −0.816, ES = 0.13; non-dominant limb 3.22% p = 0.051, ES = 0.23) did not reach statistical significance. Officiating a match provoked a reduction in isometric knee flexion strength in the non-dominant limb of football referees, while no differences were reported in assistant referees.post-print676 K

    Magnetocaloric effect enhancement driven by intrinsic defects in Ni-Mn-Sn- Co alloys

    [EN] The influence of mechanically-induced defects on the magnetostructural properties is analyzed in a Ni-Co-Mn-Sn alloy subjected to soft milling and subsequent annealing treatments. It is found that, opposite to what occurs in Ni-Mn-Sn ternary alloys, the annealing treatment affects the magnetic properties in a different way in martensite and in austenite. In particular, the saturation magnetization significantly increases in martensite after annealing whereas just a very slight variation is observed in austenite. This leads to the interesting fact that the presence of microstructural defects, far for worsening, makes the magnetocaloric effect to be higher in the as-milled state than after annealing. This behavior is explained as the result of the combination of the effect of defects on the Mn-Mn distance, the effect of Co on the magnetic exchange coupling between Mn atoms, and the effect of defects on the vibrational entropy change at the martensitic transformation.This work has been carried out with the financial support of the Spanish “Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad” (Projects number MAT2015-65165-C2-R) and of the Basque Government (Grant No. IT-1005-16).     Concordance between circulating tumor cells and clinical status during follow-up in anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) non-small-cell lung cancer patients

    Background: The identification of anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) rearrangements is found in approximately 5% of non-small-cell lung cancers (NSCLCs). However, the development of liquid biopsies as a diagnostic tool is less developed in these cases. This study investigates the use of CTCs during treatment, together with an extended follow-up to correlate with clinical evolution. Patients and Methods: A total of 13 patients out of a cohort of 212 patients with lung adenocarcinoma, presented ALK rearrangements (6%) confirmed by tumor biopsy. A total of 60 serial blood samples were collected from these patients who were prospectively enrolled in the study. Results: All patients had a positive CTC count at baseline (mean = 3). The median follow-up was 9 months (range 1-17 months). Three patients underwent surgery and their CTC counts decreased after the procedure but still remained detectable. After radiotherapy, 3 cases showed an average decrease of 5 CTCs. A total of 6 patients were treated with ALK inhibitors and a partial response was observed in 3 of them, who also presented decreased CTC counts. The other 3 patients presented primary resistance, and their CTC counts were higher than those obtained prior to progression. Conclusion: We believe that the use of CTCs for dynamic monitoring of NSCLC with ALK rearrangement and to detect disease persistence or recurrence may be a reliable technique.
