    Progress in Haploidentical Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation

    Haploidentical hematopoietic cell transplantation (HaploHCT), with cells from HLA-half-matched first degree related donors (siblings, children and parents), could revolutionize hematopoietic transplantation as it expands this form of treatment to approximately 40% of patients who do not have an HLA-matched donor in USA. This need is particularly acute in developing countries, which usually do not have an unrelated donor registry and/or cost is a major issue in acquiring unrelated donor stem cells. Accordingly, the number of haploSCTs done in USA, Europe, China, and developing countries is on the rise. Advantages to HaploHCT include almost universal (more than 95% of patients will have a half-matched related donor) and immediate availability of donor progenitor cells, the opportunity to select the best donor among family members to minimize treatment-related mortality, decrease relapse rate and improve outcomes [2], and the possibility to collect donor cells for cellular therapy post-transplantation, with the goal to enhance the anti-tumor effects of the graft. Despite its potential advantages, until recently, high donor-recipient HLA-histoincompatibility has proven very difficult to overcome

    Extraction of Saponins from Soapnut (Sapindus Mukorossi) and Their Antimicrobial Properties

    In this study optimization of extraction conditions for saponin from Sapindus mukorossi was investigated. Results showed that polarity of the extraction solvent affects the yield percentage of the extraction process. Best yield percentage was obtained as 78.1 % at 1:10 solid-liquid ratio in aqueous ethanol solution (50% v/v). The antimicrobial properties of extracts containing saponins were investigated for different microorganisms. Minimum inhibition concentrations of extract were obtained against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans.     Characterization of angularly resolved EUV emission from 2-μm-wavelength laser-driven Sn plasmas using preformed liquid disk targets

    The emission properties of tin plasmas, produced by the irradiation of preformed liquid tin targets by several-ns-long 2 µm-wavelength laser pulses, are studied in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) regime. In a two-pulse scheme, a pre-pulse laser is first used to deform tin microdroplets into thin, extended disks before the main (2 µm) pulse creates the EUV-emitting plasma. Irradiating 30- to 300 µm-diameter targets with 2 µm laser pulses, we find that the efficiency in creating EUV light around 13.5 nm follows the fraction of laser light that overlaps with the target. Next, the effects of a change in 2 µm drive laser intensity (0.6–1.8 × 1011 W cm−2) and pulse duration (3.7–7.4 ns) are studied. It is found that the angular dependence of the emission of light within a 2% bandwidth around 13.5 nm and within the backward 2π hemisphere around the incoming laser beam is almost independent of intensity and duration of the 2 µm drive laser. With increasing target diameter, the emission in this 2% bandwidth becomes increasingly anisotropic, with a greater fraction of light being emitted into the hemisphere of the incoming laser beam. For direct comparison, a similar set of experiments is performed with a 1 µm-wavelength drive laser. Emission spectra, recorded in a 5.5–25.5 nm wavelength range, show significant self-absorption of light around 13.5 nm in the 1 µm case, while in the 2 µm case only an opacity-related broadening of the spectral feature at 13.5 nm is observed. This work demonstrates the enhanced capabilities and performance of 2 µm-driven plasmas produced from disk targets when compared to 1 µm-driven plasmas, providing strong motivation for the use of 2 µm lasers as drive lasers in future high-power sources of EUV light

    EUV spectroscopy of Sn5+-Sn(10+)ions in an electron beam ion trap and laser-produced plasmas

    Emission spectra from multiply-charged Sn5+ –Sn10+ions are recorded from an electron beam ion trap (EBIT) and from laser-produced plasma (LPP) in the extreme ultraviolet range relevant for nanolithographic applications. Features in the wavelength regime between 12.6 and 20.8 nm are studied. Using the Cowan code, emission line features of the charge-state-resolved Sn ion spectra obtained from the EBIT are identified. Emission features from tin LPP either from a liquid micro-droplet or planar solid target are subsequently identified and assigned to specific charge states using the EBIT data. For the planar solid tin target, the 4d–5p transitions of Sn8+ –Sn10+ions are shown to dominate the long-wavelength part of the measured spectrum and transitions of type 4d–4f + 4p–4d are visible in absorption. For the droplet target case, a clear increase in the charge state distribution with increasing laser intensity is observed. This qualitatively demonstrates the potential of using long-wavelength out-of-band emission features to probe the charge states contributing to the strong unresolved transition array at 13.5 nm relevant for nanolithography

    Phylogeny and evolution of infectious bursal disease virus circulating in Turkish broiler flocks

    The emergence of new infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) variants can threaten poultry health and production all over the world causing significant economic losses. Therefore, this study was performed to determine IBDV molecular epidemilogy, VP2 gene variation, and corresponding pathological lesions in IBDV infected chickens in Turkey. For this, 1855 bursa of Fabricius samples were collected from 371 vaccinated broiler flocks. Atrophia and haemorrhages were seen in the bursa Fabricius of very virulent IBDV (vvIBDV) infected chickens. Partial VP2 gene was sequenced and phylogenetic, recombination, and evolutionary analyses were performed. 1548 (83.5%) out of 1855 of bursa of Fabricius samples were IBDV positive and 1525 of those could be sequenced. The recombination analysis did not detect occurrence of any recombination event among the Turkish strains. Among 1525 sequenced samples, 1380 of them were found to be classical strains. Among 1380 classical strains, 1317 were similar to IBDV 2512, 11 to Faragher 52/70, 40 to 228 E, and 12 to Lukert strain. Out of 1525 reverse transcriptase ploymerase chain reaction positive samples, 144 of them were found to be similar to vvIBDV-VP2 gene reported to GenBank previously. The phylogenetic tree performed on a broad sequence dataset demonstrated grouping of vvIBDV Turkish strains in three different clusters, including sequences collected also from Iraq and Kuwait (Cluster 1), Indian (Cluster 2), and a distinct Turkish-only cluster (Cluster 3). The evolutionary rate estimation on branches/clades including Turkish strain mirrored the expected one for RNA viruses and no significant differences were found among different considered branches. In conclusion, results of this study indicate that vvIBDV strains similar to those circulating in various countries in the Middle East are present and undergoing evolution in chickens from Turkish broiler flocks. This point needs to be taken into account in planning adequate control strategies

    The relationship between serum albumin levels and 24-h ambulatory blood pressure monitoring recordings in non-diabetic essential hypertensive patients

    OBJECTIVES: The goal of this study was to evaluate the relationship between serum albumin levels and 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (24-h ABPM) recordings in non-diabetic essential hypertensive patients. METHODS: A total of 354 patients (mean [SD] age: 55.5 [14.3] years, 50% females) with essential hypertension and 24-h ABPM recordings were included. Patient 24-h nighttime and daytime ABPM values, systolic and diastolic dipping status and average nocturnal dipping were recorded. The correlations between serum albumin levels and nocturnal systolic and diastolic dipping were evaluated, and correlates of average nocturnal systolic dipping were determined via a linear regression model.
