    Numerical Study of Three-dimensional Spatial Instability of a Supersonic Flat Plate Boundary Layer

    The behavior of spatially growing three-dimensional waves in a supersonic boundary layer was studied numerically by solving the complete Navier-Stokes equations. Satisfactory comparison with linear parallel and non-parallel stability theories, and experiment are obtained when a small amplitude inflow disturbance is used. The three-dimensional unsteady Navier-Stokes equations are solved by a finite difference method which is fourth-order and second-order accurate in the convection and viscous terms respectively, and second-order accurate in time. Spanwise periodicity is assumed. The inflow disturbance is composed of eigenfunctions from linear stability theory. By increasing the amplitude of the inflow disturbance, nonlinear effects in the form of a relaxation type oscillation of the time signal of rho(u) are observed

    Boundary layer transition

    The boundary layer stability, its active control by sound and surface heating and the effect of curvature are studied numerically and experimentally for subsonic flow. In addition, the experimental and flight test data are correlated using the stability theory for supersonic Mach numbers. Active transition fixing and feedback control of boundary layer by sound interactions are experimentally investigated at low speed over an airfoil. Numerical simulation of active control by surface heating and cooling in air shows that by appropriate phase adjustment a reduction in the level of perturbation can be obtained. This simulation is based on the solution of two-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations for a flat plate. Goertler vortices are studied experimentally on an airfoil in the Low Turbulence Pressure Tunnel (LTPT). The flow pattern was visualized using the sublimating chemical technique and data were obtained using a three component laser velocimeter. The effect of curvature on swept leading-edge stability on a cylinder was numerically studied. The results suggest that transition is dominated by traveling disturbance waves and that the waves with the greatest total amplification has an amplitude ratio of e sup 11.     Episodic disk accretion in the halo of the 'old' Pre-Main Sequence cluster Eta Chamaeleontis

    We present multi-epoch medium-resolution observations of two M4.5 candidate members in the halo of the ~8 Myr Eta Chamaeleontis open cluster. Over six months of observations both stars exhibited variations in their H-alpha line profiles on timescales of days to months, with at least one episode of substantial activity attributable to accretion from a circumstellar disk. We derive an accretion rate ~10^-8.7 Msun/yr for this event, with a rate of ~10^-10.6 Msun/yr in quiescence. Episodic accretion like that observed here means existing surveys of accreting Weak-lined T-Tauri Stars in young clusters are likely incomplete and that gas dissipation timescales calculated from the fraction of accreting objects are underestimates.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, 1 table.     A Mesolithic settlement site at Howick, Northumberland: a preliminary report

    Excavations at a coastal site at Howick during 2000 and 2002 have revealed evidence for a substantial Mesolithic settlement and a Bronze Age cist cemetery. Twenty one radiocarbon determinations of the earlier eighth millennium BP (Cal.) indicate that the Mesolithic site is one of the earliest known in northern Britain. An 8m core of sediment was recovered from stream deposits adjacent to the archaeological site which provides information on local environmental conditions. Howick offers a unique opportunity to understand aspects of hunter-gatherer colonisation and settlement during a period of rapid palaeogeographical change around the margins of the North Sea basin, at a time when it was being progressively inundated by the final stages of the postglacial marine transgression. The cist cemetery will add to the picture of Bronze Age occupation of the coastal strip and again reveals a correlation between the location of Bronze Age and Mesolithic sites which has been observed elsewhere in the region

    Constraining the metallicities, ages, star formation histories, and ionizing continua of extragalactic massive star populations

    We infer the properties of massive star populations using the far-ultraviolet stellar continua of 61 star-forming galaxies: 42 at low-z observed with HST and 19 at z~2 from the Megasaura sample. We fit each stellar continuum with a linear combination of up to 50 single age and single metallicity Starburst99 models. From these fits, we derive light-weighted ages and metallicities, which agree with stellar wind and photospheric spectral features, and infer the spectral shapes and strengths of the ionizing continua. Inferred light-weighted stellar metallicities span 0.05-1.5 Z_\odot and are similar to the measured nebular metallicities. We quantify the ionizing continua using the ratio of the ionizing flux at 900\AA\ to the non-ionizing flux at 1500\AA\ and demonstrate the evolution of this ratio with stellar age and metallicity using theoretical single burst models. These single burst models only match the inferred ionizing continua of half of the sample, while the other half are described by a mixture of stellar ages. Mixed age populations produce stronger and harder ionizing spectra than continuous star formation histories, but, contrary to previous studies that assume constant star formation, have similar stellar and nebular metallicities. Stellar population age and metallicity affect the far-UV continua in different and distinguishable ways; assuming a constant star formation history diminishes the diagnostic power. Finally, we provide simple prescriptions to determine the ionizing photon production efficiency (ξion\xi_{ion}) from the stellar population properties. ξion\xi_{ion} has a range of log(ξion)=24.425.7\xi_{ion})=24.4-25.7 Hz erg1^{-1} that depends on stellar age, metallicity, star formation history, and contributions from binary star evolution.     Room temperature magneto-optic effect in silicon light-emitting diodes

    In weakly spin-orbit coupled materials, the spin-selective nature of recombination can give rise to large magnetic-field effects, for example on electro-luminescence from molecular semiconductors. While silicon has weak spin-orbit coupling, observing spin-dependent recombination through magneto-electroluminescence is challenging due to the inefficiency of emission due to silicon's indirect band-gap, and to the difficulty in separating spin-dependent phenomena from classical magneto-resistance effects. Here we overcome these challenges to measure magneto-electroluminescence in silicon light-emitting diodes fabricated via gas immersion laser doping. These devices allow us to achieve efficient emission while retaining a well-defined geometry thus suppressing classical magnetoresistance effects to a few percent. We find that electroluminescence can be enhanced by up to 300\% near room temperature in a seven Tesla magnetic field showing that the control of the spin degree of freedom can have a strong impact on the efficiency of silicon LEDs

    The journey of Zika to the developing brain

    Zika virus is a mosquito-borne Flavivirus originally isolated from humans in 1952. Following its re-emergence in Brazil in 2015, an increase in the number of babies born with microcephaly to infected mothers was observed. Microcephaly is a neurodevelopmental disorder, characterised phenotypically by a smaller than average head size, and is usually developed in utero. The 2015 outbreak in the Americas led to the World Health Organisation declaring Zika a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. Since then, much research into the effects of Zika has been carried out. Studies have investigated the structure of the virus, its effects on and evasion of the immune response, cellular entry including target receptors, its transmission from infected mother to foetus and its cellular targets. This review discusses current knowledge and novel research into these areas, in hope of developing a further understanding of how exposure of pregnant women to the Zika virus can lead to impaired brain development of their foetus. Although no longer considered an epidemic in the Americas, the mechanism by which Zika acts is still not comprehensively and wholly understood, and this understanding will be crucial in developing effective vaccines and treatments

    Site-selective measurement of coupled spin pairs in an organic semiconductor

    From organic electronics to biological systems, understanding the role of intermolecular interactions between spin pairs is a key challenge. Here we show how such pairs can be selectively addressed with combined spin and optical sensitivity. We demonstrate this for bound pairs of spin-triplet excitations formed by singlet fission, with direct applicability across a wide range of synthetic and biological systems. We show that the site sensitivity of exchange coupling allows distinct triplet pairs to be resonantly addressed at different magnetic fields, tuning them between optically bright singlet (S=0) and dark triplet quintet (S=1,2) configurations: This induces narrow holes in a broad optical emission spectrum, uncovering exchange-specific luminescence. Using fields up to 60 T, we identify three distinct triplet-pair sites, with exchange couplings varying over an order of magnitude (0.3–5 meV), each with its own luminescence spectrum, coexisting in a single material. Our results reveal how site selectivity can be achieved for organic spin pairs in a broad range of systems

    Improving the FEH statistical procedures for flood frequency estimation

    This report recommends changes to the procedures contained in the Flood Estimation Handbook (FEH), which have been adopted as standard practice by the principal bodies engaged in flood frequency estimation in the UK and, in particular, by the Environment Agency. These procedures provide estimates of the flows that will occur in rivers on moderately rare occasions: flow values that have an exceedance probability in any given year of 50 per cent (a 2-year return period) to 1 per cent (a 100-year return period), or even more rare. In the majority of cases where such estimates are required, the locations affected will be ungauged and too far from established river gauging stations to provide data records that can be immediately transferred. The changes recommended arise, in part, because the HiFlows-UK project has led to the creation of a much-improved database of systematically recorded flood data. Not only are the data records now much longer than those used previously but the HiFlows-UK project put substantial effort into the quality control and assessment of the whole data-set. This means that the data available for analysis have been dramatically improved. Another influence on the renewed procedures has been feedback from users of the FEH, both informal and formal. Without substantially changing the overall framework of the methodology, most technical details of the method have been updated to improve the performance of the procedure. The updates include significant improvements to the theoretical statistical framework underlying the method. In addition, it has been possible to consider some new descriptors of catchment topography and local climate that have been proposed since the FEH study. In particular, a new descriptor that measures floodplain extent has been devised and is now included in the improved procedures. This report is largely a technical description of the studies that have led to the new recommendations. The folllowing are the key improvements. • A new regression model for estimating the median annual maximum flood (QMED) at ungauged catchments (Chapter 4). • An improved procedure for the use of donor catchments for estimation of QMED at ungauged catchments (Chapter 5). • An improved procedure for formation of pooling groups and estimation of pooled growth curves (Chapter 6). Flood estimates produced by the new procedures can be substantially different from those produced using the original FEH procedures. On taking the catchments whose data have been analysed as typical examples, and treating them as if they were ungauged, the ratios of the new estimates to the FEH estimates indicate the following changes. • The changes in QMED range from 0.55 to 2.01, with half being greater than 1.15 (25 per cent of the ratios are less than 1.00, and 25 per cent are greater than 1.24). • For floods with an annual probability of exceedance of 1 per cent (the 1 per cent flood), the changes range from 0.48 to 2.24, with half being greater than 1.14 (25 per cent of the ratios are less than 0.97 and 25 per cent are greater than 1.32). For both QMED and the 1 per cent flood, the new procedure produced lower estimates than the FEH in the East of England, whereas increases in both quantities were generally observed in West England, Wales and Scotland
