Fluxes and Warping for Gauge Couplings in F-theory
We compute flux-dependent corrections in the four-dimensional F-theory
effective action using the M-theory dual description. In M-theory the 7-brane
fluxes are encoded by four-form flux and modify the background geometry and
Kaluza-Klein reduction ansatz. In particular, the flux sources a warp factor
which also depends on the torus directions of the compactification fourfold.
This dependence is crucial in the derivation of the four-dimensional action,
although the torus fiber is auxiliary in F-theory. In M-theory the 7-branes are
described by an infinite array of Taub-NUT spaces. We use the explicit metric
on this geometry to derive the locally corrected warp factor and M-theory
three-from as closed expressions. We focus on contributions to the 7-brane
gauge coupling function from this M-theory back-reaction and show that terms
quadratic in the internal seven-brane flux are induced. The real part of the
gauge coupling function is modified by the M-theory warp factor while the
imaginary part is corrected due to a modified M-theory three-form potential.
The obtained contributions match the known weak string coupling result, but
also yield additional terms suppressed at weak coupling. This shows that the
completion of the M-theory reduction opens the way to compute various
corrections in a genuine F-theory setting away from the weak string coupling
limit.Comment: 46 page
Kahler Moduli Inflation Revisited
We perform a detailed numerical analysis of inflationary solutions in Kahler
moduli of type IIB flux compactifications. We show that there are inflationary
solutions even when all the fields play an important role in the overall shape
of the scalar potential. Moreover, there exists a direction of attraction for
the inflationary trajectories that correspond to the constant volume direction.
This basin of attraction enables the system to have an island of stability in
the set of initial conditions. We provide explicit examples of these
trajectories, compute the corresponding tilt of the density perturbations power
spectrum and show that they provide a robust prediction of n_s approximately
0.96 for 60 e-folds of inflation.Comment: 27 pages, 9 figure
Moduli Stabilization and Inflationary Cosmology with Poly-Instantons in Type IIB Orientifolds
Equipped with concrete examples of Type IIB orientifolds featuring
poly-instanton corrections to the superpotential, the effects on moduli
stabilization and inflationary cosmology are analyzed. Working in the framework
of the LARGE volume scenario, the Kaehler modulus related to the size of the
four-cycle supporting the poly-instanton contributes sub-dominantly to the
scalar potential. It is shown that this Kaehler modulus gets stabilized and, by
displacing it from its minimum, can play the role of an inflaton. Subsequent
cosmological implications are discussed and compared to experimental data.Comment: 38 pages, 7 figures, Reference added, Typo fixed, Published versio
Flux and Instanton Effects in Local F-theory Models and Hierarchical Fermion Masses
We study the deformation induced by fluxes and instanton effects on Yukawa
couplings involving 7-brane intersections in local F-theory constructions. In
the absence of non-perturbative effects, holomorphic Yukawa couplings do not
depend on open string fluxes. On the other hand instanton effects (or gaugino
condensation on distant 7-branes) do induce corrections to the Yukawas. The
leading order effect may also be captured by the presence of closed string
(1,2) IASD fluxes, which give rise to a non-commutative structure. We check
that even in the presence of these non-perturbative effects the holomorphic
Yukawas remain independent of magnetic fluxes. Although fermion mass
hierarchies may be obtained from these non-perturbative effects, they would
give identical Yukawa couplings for D-quark and Lepton masses in SU(5) F-theory
GUT's, in contradiction with experiment. We point out that this problem may be
solved by appropriately normalizing the wavefunctions. We show in a simple toy
model how the presence of hypercharge flux may then be responsible for the
difference between D-quarks and Lepton masses in local SU(5) GUT's.Comment: 84 pages, 1 figure. v2: minor corrections and references adde
Explicit de Sitter Flux Vacua for Global String Models with Chiral Matter
We address the open question of performing an explicit stabilisation of all
closed string moduli (including dilaton, complex structure and Kaehler moduli)
in fluxed type IIB Calabi-Yau compactifications with chiral matter. Using toric
geometry we construct Calabi-Yau manifolds with del Pezzo singularities.
D-branes located at such singularities can support the Standard Model gauge
group and matter content. In order to control complex structure moduli
stabilisation we consider Calabi-Yau manifolds which exhibit a discrete
symmetry that reduces the effective number of complex structure moduli. We
calculate the corresponding periods in the symplectic basis of invariant
three-cycles and find explicit flux vacua for concrete examples. We compute the
values of the flux superpotential and the string coupling at these vacua.
Starting from these explicit complex structure solutions, we obtain AdS and dS
minima where the Kaehler moduli are stabilised by a mixture of D-terms,
non-perturbative and perturbative alpha'-corrections as in the LARGE Volume
Scenario. In the considered example the visible sector lives at a dP_6
singularity which can be higgsed to the phenomenologically interesting class of
models at the dP_3 singularity.Comment: 49 pages, 5 figures; v2: references adde
Holomorphic variables in magnetized brane models with continuous Wilson lines
We analyze the action of the target-space modular group in toroidal type IIB
orientifold compactifications with magnetized D-branes and continuous Wilson
lines. The transformation of matter fields agree with that of twisted fields in
heterotic compactifications, constituting a check of type I/heterotic duality.
We identify the holomorphic N = 1 variables for these compactifications. Matter
fields and closed string moduli are both redefined by open string moduli. The
redefinition of matter fields can be read directly from the perturbative Yukawa
couplings, whereas closed string moduli redefinitions are obtained from D-brane
instanton superpotential couplings. The resulting expressions reproduce and
generalize, in the presence of internal magnetic fields, previous results in
the literature.Comment: 9 pages, no figures; v2: conventions for Wilson lines changed, major

The study design of UDRIVE: the Naturalistic Driving Study across Europe for cars, trucks and scooters
Purpose: UDRIVE is the first large-scale European Naturalistic Driving Study on cars, trucks and powered two wheelers. The acronym stands for "European naturalistic Driving and Riding for Infrastructure & Vehicle safety and Environment". The purpose of the study is to gain a better understanding of what happens on the road in everyday traffic situations. Methods: The paper describes Naturalistic Driving Studies, a method which provides insight into the actual real-world behaviour of road users, unaffected by experimental conditions and related biases. Naturalistic driving can be defined as a study undertaken to provide insight into driver behaviour during everyday trips by recording details of the driver, the vehicle and the surroundings through unobtrusive data gathering equipment and without experimental control. Data collection will take place in six EU Member States. Results: Road User Behaviour will be studied with a focus on both safety and environment. The UDRIVE project follows the steps of the FESTA-V methodology, which was originally designed for Field Operational Tests. Conclusions: Defining research questions forms the basis of the study design and the specification of the recording equipment. Both will be described in this paper. Although the project has just started collecting data from drivers, we consider the process of designing the study as a major result which may help other initiatives to set up similar studies
Non-perturbative Vacuum Destabilization and D-brane Dynamics
We analyze the process of string vacuum destabilization due to instanton
induced superpotential couplings which depend linearly on charged fields. These
non-perturbative instabilities result in potentials for the D-brane moduli and
lead to processes of D-brane recombination, motion and partial moduli
stabilization at the non-perturbative vacuum. By using techniques of D-brane
instanton calculus, we explicitly compute this scalar potential in toroidal
orbifold compactifications with magnetized D-branes by summing over the
possible discrete instanton configurations. We illustrate explicitly the
resulting dynamics in globally consistent models. These instabilities can have
phenomenological applications to breaking hidden sector gauge groups, open
string moduli stabilization and supersymmetry breaking. Our results suggest
that breaking supersymmetry by Polonyi-like models in string theory is more
difficult than expected.Comment: 61 pages, 6 figures, 5 tables; Minor corrections, version published

Towards multi-scale dynamics on the baryonic branch of Klebanov-Strassler
We construct explicitly a new class of backgrounds in type-IIB supergravity
which generalize the baryonic branch of Klebanov-Strassler. We apply a
solution-generating technique that, starting from a large class of solutions of
the wrapped-D5 system, yields the new solutions, and then proceed to study in
detail their properties, both in the IR and in the UV. We propose a simple
intuitive field theory interpretation of the rotation procedure and of the
meaning of our new solutions within the Papadopoulos-Tseytlin ansatz, in
particular in relation to the duality cascade in the Klebanov-Strassler
solution. The presence in the field theory of different VEVs for operators of
dimensions 2, 3 and 6 suggests that this is an important step towards the
construction of the string dual of a genuinely multi-scale (strongly coupled)
dynamical model.Comment: 37 pages, 7 figures. References added, version to appear in JHE
