    Protein haze formation in wines revisited. The stabilising effect of organic acids

    The effect on the wine protein haze potential of five organic acids commonly encountered in wines (L(+)- tartaric, L( )-malic, citric, succinic and gluconic acids) was assessed. All five acids, tested at 20 mM, reduced dramatically the haze potential of proteins, either in wine or dissolved in water, throughout the range of pH values typical of wines (i.e., from 2.8 through 3.8). Subtle differences among the acid effects did not correlate with the number of their carboxyl groups, but were attributed to electrostatic interactions that depend upon the acid pKa values, the protein pI values and the medium pH. These results invalidate or question the validity of all experiments on wine proteins involving wine model solutions containing organic acids. Overall, the results obtained in the present work clearly indicate that organic acids with a common occurrence in wines exhibit a stabilising effect upon the haze potential of the wine proteins

    Complex transitions to synchronization in delay-coupled networks of logistic maps

    A network of delay-coupled logistic maps exhibits two different synchronization regimes, depending on the distribution of the coupling delay times. When the delays are homogeneous throughout the network, the network synchronizes to a time-dependent state [Atay et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 144101 (2004)], which may be periodic or chaotic depending on the delay; when the delays are sufficiently heterogeneous, the synchronization proceeds to a steady-state, which is unstable for the uncoupled map [Masoller and Marti, Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 134102 (2005)]. Here we characterize the transition from time-dependent to steady-state synchronization as the width of the delay distribution increases. We also compare the two transitions to synchronization as the coupling strength increases. We use transition probabilities calculated via symbolic analysis and ordinal patterns. We find that, as the coupling strength increases, before the onset of steady-state synchronization the network splits into two clusters which are in anti-phase relation with each other. On the other hand, with increasing delay heterogeneity, no cluster formation is seen at the onset of steady-state synchronization; however, a rather complex unsynchronized state is detected, revealed by a diversity of transition probabilities in the network nodes

    OBJECTIVE To investigate occlusal result and post-treatment changes after orthodontic extraction of maxillary first permanent molars in patients with a Class II division 1 malocclusion. SETTING AND SAMPLE Retrospective longitudinal study in a private practice, with outcome evaluation by an independent academic hospital. Ninety-six patients (53 males, 43 females) consecutively treated by one orthodontist with maxillary first permanent molar extraction were studied, divided into three facial types, based on pre-treatment cephalometric values: hypodivergent (n = 18), normodivergent (n = 21) and hyperdivergent (n = 57). METHODS Occlusal outcome was scored on dental casts at T1 (pre-treatment), T2 (post-treatment) and T3 (mean follow-up 2.5 ± 0.9 years) using the weighted Peer Assessment Rating (PAR) Index. The paired sample t test and one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's post hoc test were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS PAR was reduced by 95.7% and 89.9% at T2 and T3, respectively, compared with the start of treatment. The largest post-treatment changes were found for overjet and buccal occlusion. Linear regression analysis did not reveal a clear effect (R-Square 0.074) of age, sex, PAR score at T1, incremental PAR score T2-T1, overjet and overbite at T1, and facial type on the changes after treatment (incremental PAR score T3-T2). CONCLUSIONS The occlusal outcome achieved after Class II division 1 treatment with maxillary first permanent molar extractions was maintained to a large extent over a mean post-treatment follow-up of 2.5 years. Limited changes after treatment were found, for which no risk factors could be discerned

    Measurement and PC-SAFT modeling of solid-liquid equilibrium of deep eutectic solvents of quaternary ammonium chlorides and carboxylic acids

    In this study the solid-liquid equilibria (SLE) of 15 binary mixtures composed of one of three different symmetrical quaternary ammonium chlorides and one of five different fatty acids were measured. The experimental data obtained showed extreme negative deviations to ideality causing large melting-temperature depressions (up to 300 K) that are characteristic for deep eutectic systems. The experimental data revealed that cross-interactions between quaternary ammonium salt and fatty acid increase with increasing alkyl chain length of the quaternary ammonium chloride and with increasing chain length of the carboxylic acid. The pronounced decrease of melting temperatures in these deep eutectic systems is mainly caused by strong hydrogen-bonding interactions, and thermodynamic modeling required an approach that takes hydrogen bonding into account. Thus, the measured phase diagrams were modeled with perturbed-chain statistical associating fluid theory based on the classical molecular homonuclear approach. The model showed very good agreement with the experimental data using a semi-predictive modeling approach, in which binary interaction parameters between quaternary ammonium chloride and carboxylic acid correlated with chain length of the components. This supports the experimental findings on the phase behavior and interactions present in these systems and it allows estimating eutectic points of such highly non-ideal mixtures.This work was developed in the scope of the project CICECO e Aveiro Institute of Materials, POCI-01-0145-FEDER-007679 (Ref.     Ferromagnetism without flat bands in thin armchair nanoribbons

    Describing by a Hubbard type of model a thin armchair graphene ribbon in the armchair hexagon chain limit, one shows in exact terms, that even if the system does not have flat bands at all, at low concentration a mesoscopic sample can have ferromagnetic ground state, being metallic in the same time.     Coordenação motora: um estudo de tracking em crianças dos 6 aos 10 anos da Região Autónoma dos Açores, Portugal

    O objetivo do estudo é caracterizar o desenvolvimento coordenativo em crianças açorianas dos 6 aos 10 anos em função do sexo e estimar a estabilidade da mudança intraindividual nas diferenças interindividuais ao longo dos quatro anos. A amostra de 285 crianças (143 meninos e 142 meninas) é proveniente do estudo longitudinal-misto da Região Autônoma dos Açores (RAA). A coordenação motora (CoM) foi determinada com a bateria de testes KTK que compreende 4 provas: equilíbrio à retaguarda (ER), saltos laterais (SL), saltos monopedais (SM) e transposição lateral (TL). As estatísticas descritivas básicas, a ANOVA II, assim como as auto-correlações foram realizadas no SPSS 15. Recorremos ao y de Foulkes e Davies para verificar a quantidade de crianças que mantêm a mesma posição relativa. As medidas descritivas básicas revelaram um incremento das médias, em ambos os sexos, ao longo da idade. A ANOVA II mostrou diferenças significativas em todos os testes ao longo dos quatro anos e, somente no teste ER foi encontrada uma interação significativa entre tempo e sexo. O desvio-padrão revelou diferenças inter-individuais marcantes, sobretudo nos testes ER, SM e SL. A correlação de Pearson apresentou uma estabilidade moderada. No teste Equilíbrio à Retaguarda, em ambos os sexos, e Saltos Monopedais nos meninos não se verificou nenhum tracking no desempenho o que revela uma forte heterogeneidade no desenvolvimento da Coordenação Motora ao longo dos quatro anos. Tais resultados reafirmam o direito à diferença nos níveis de coordenação e apelam para o entendimento do seu significado em termos pedagógicos

    Periostin as a modulator of chronic cardiac remodeling after myocardial infarction

    OBJECTIVE: After acute myocardial infarction, during the cardiac repair phase, periostin is released into the infarct and activates signaling pathways that are essential for the reparative process. However, the role of periostin in chronic cardiac remodeling after myocardial infarction remains to be elucidated. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between tissue periostin and cardiac variables in the chronic cardiac remodeling induced by myocardial infarction. METHODS: Male Wistar rats were assigned to 2 groups: a simulated surgery group (SHAM; n = 8) and a myocardial infarction group (myocardial infarction; n = 13). After 3 months, morphological, functional and biochemical analyses were performed. The data are expressed as means±SD or medians (including the lower and upper quartiles). RESULTS: Myocardial infarctions induced increased left ventricular diastolic and systolic areas associated with a decreased fractional area change and a posterior wall shortening velocity. With regard to the extracellular matrix variables, the myocardial infarction group presented with higher values of periostin and types I and III collagen and higher interstitial collagen volume fractions and myocardial hydroxyproline concentrations. In addition, periostin was positively correlated with type III collagen levels (r = 0.673, p = 0.029) and diastolic (r = 0.678, p = 0.036) and systolic (r = 0.795, p = 0.006) left ventricular areas. Considering the relationship between periostin and the cardiac function variables, periostin was inversely correlated with both the fractional area change (r = -0.783, p = 0.008) and the posterior wall shortening velocity (r = -0.767, p = 0.012). CONCLUSIONS: Periostin might be a modulator of deleterious cardiac remodeling in the chronic phase after myocardial infarction in rats
