    Cosmological production of H_2 before the formation of the first galaxies

    Previous calculations of the pregalactic chemistry have found that a small amount of H_2, x[H_2]=n[H_2]/n[H] = 2.6e-6, is produced catalytically through the H^-, H_2^+, and HeH^+ mechanisms. We revisit this standard calculation taking into account the effects of the nonthermal radiation background produced by cosmic hydrogen recombination, which is particularly effective at destroying H^- via photodetachment. We also take into consideration the non-equilibrium level populations of H_2^+, which occur since transitions among the rotational-vibrational levels are slow compared to photodissociation. The new calculation predicts a final H_2 abundance of x[H_2] = 6e-7 for the standard cosmology. This production is due almost entirely to the H^- mechanism, with ~1 per cent coming from HeH^+ and ~0.004 per cent from H_2^+. We evaluate the heating of the diffuse pregalactic gas from the chemical reactions that produce H_2 and from rotational transitions in H_2, and find them to be negligible.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, MNRAS submitte

    Emergence of steady and oscillatory localized structures in a phytoplankton-nutrient model

    Co-limitation of marine phytoplankton growth by light and nutrient, both of which are essential for phytoplankton, leads to complex dynamic behavior and a wide array of coherent patterns. The building blocks of this array can be considered to be deep chlorophyll maxima, or DCMs, which are structures localized in a finite depth interior to the water column. From an ecological point of view, DCMs are evocative of a balance between the inflow of light from the water surface and of nutrients from the sediment. From a (linear) bifurcational point of view, they appear through a transcritical bifurcation in which the trivial, no-plankton steady state is destabilized. This article is devoted to the analytic investigation of the weakly nonlinear dynamics of these DCM patterns, and it has two overarching themes. The first of these concerns the fate of the destabilizing stationary DCM mode beyond the center manifold regime. Exploiting the natural singularly perturbed nature of the model, we derive an explicit reduced model of asymptotically high dimension which fully captures these dynamics. Our subsequent and fully detailed study of this model - which involves a subtle asymptotic analysis necessarily transgressing the boundaries of a local center manifold reduction - establishes that a stable DCM pattern indeed appears from a transcritical bifurcation. However, we also deduce that asymptotically close to the original destabilization, the DCM looses its stability in a secondary bifurcation of Hopf type. This is in agreement with indications from numerical simulations available in the literature. Employing the same methods, we also identify a much larger DCM pattern. The development of the method underpinning this work - which, we expect, shall prove useful for a larger class of models - forms the second theme of this article

    Goals, Strategies and First Discoveries of AO327, the Arecibo All-Sky 327 MHz Drift Pulsar Survey

    We report initial results from AO327, a drift survey for pulsars with the Arecibo telescope at 327 MHz. The first phase of AO327 will cover the sky at declinations of -1 to 28 degrees, excluding the region within 5 degrees of the Galactic plane, where high scattering and dispersion make low-frequency surveys sub-optimal. We record data from a 57 MHz bandwidth with 1024 channels and 125 us sampling time. The 60 s transit time through the AO327 beam means that the survey is sensitive to very tight relativistic binaries even with no acceleration searches. To date we have detected 44 known pulsars with periods ranging from 3 ms to 2.21 s and discovered 24 new pulsars. The new discoveries include three millisecond pulsars, three objects with periods of a few tens of milliseconds typical of young as well as mildly recycled pulsars, a nuller, and a rotating radio transient. Five of the new discoveries are in binary systems. The second phase of AO327 will cover the sky at declinations of 28 to 38 degrees. We compare the sensitivity and search volume of AO327 to the Green Bank North Celestial Cap survey and the GBT350 drift survey, both of which operate at 350 MHz.Comment: Accepted for publication in Ap

    LINEAR AND NONLINEAR MIXED-EFFECTS MODELS

    Recent developments in computational methods for maximum likelihood (ML) or restricted maximum likelihood (REML) estimation of parameters in general linear mixed-effects models have made the analysis of data in typical agricultural settings much easier. With software such as SAS PROC MIXED we are able to handle data from random-effects one-way classifications, from blocked designs including incomplete blocked designs, from hierarchical designs such as splitplot designs, and other types of data that may be described as repeated measures or longitudinal data or growth-curve data. It is especially helpful that the new computational methods do not depend on balance in the data so we are able to deal more easily with observational studies or with randomly missing data in a designed experiment . We describe some of the new computational approaches and how they are implemented in the nlme3.0 library for the S-PLUS language. One of the most powerful features of this language is the graphics capabilities, especially the trellis graphics facilities developed by Bill Cleveland and his coworkers at Bell Labs. Although most participants in this conference may be more familiar with SAS, and most of the models described here can be fit with PROC MIXED or the NLiNMIX macro or new PROC NLM IXED in SAS version 7, some exposure to the combination of graphical display and model-fitting approaches from S-PLUS may be informative . We show how data exploration with trellis graphics, followed by fitting and comparing mixedeffects models, followed by graphical assessment of the fitted model can be used in a variety of situations. On some occasions, such as modeling growth curves, a linear trend or polynomial trend or other types of linear statistical models for the within-subject time dependence are just not going to do an adequate job of representing the data. In those cases, a nonlinear model is more appropriate. We show how the concept of a random coefficient model can be extended to nonlinear models so as to fit nonlinear mixed-effects models

    Methods of isolation and identification of pathogenic and potential pathogenic bacteria from skins and tannery effluents

    Currently there is no standard protocol available within the leather industry to isolate and identify pathogenic bacteria from hides, skins or tannery effluent. This study was therefore carried out to identify simple but effective methods for isolation and identification of bacterial pathogens from the effluent and skins during leather processing. Identification methods based on both phenotypic and genotypic characteristics were investigated. Bacillus cereus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were used as indicator bacteria to evaluate the isolation and identification methods. Decontaminated calfskins were inoculated with a pure culture of the above mentioned bacterial species followed by a pre-tanning and chromium tanning processes. Effluent samples were collected and skins were swabbed at the end of each processing stage. Bacterial identification was carried out based on the phenotypic characteristics; such as colony appearance on selective solid media, cell morphology following a standard Gram-staining and spore staining techniques, and biochemical reactions, e.g., the ability of a bacterial species to ferment particular sugars and ability to produce certain enzymes. Additionally, an identification system based on bacterial phenotypic characteristics, known as Biolog® system was applied. A pulsed-filed gel electrophoresis (PFGE) method for bacterial DNA fingerprinting was also evaluated and used for the identification of the inoculated bacteria.     The present understanding of the charge collection in GaAs detectors with respect to the materials used and its processing are discussed. The radiation induced degradation of the charge collection efficiency and the leakage current of the detectors are summarised.     Bulk phase behaviour of binary hard platelet mixtures from density functional theory

    We investigate isotropic-isotropic, isotropic-nematic and nematic-nematic phase coexistence in binary mixtures of circular platelets with vanishing thickness, continuous rotational degrees of freedom and radial size ratios λ\lambda up to 5. A fundamental measure density functional theory, previously used for the one-component model, is proposed and results are compared against those from Onsager theory as a benchmark. For λ≤1.7\lambda \leq 1.7 the system displays isotropic-nematic phase coexistence with a widening of the biphasic region for increasing values of λ\lambda. For size ratios λ≥2\lambda \geq 2, we find demixing into two nematic states becomes stable and an isotropic-nematic-nematic triple point can occur. Fundamental measure theory gives a smaller isotropic-nematic biphasic region than Onsager theory and locates the transition at lower densities. Furthermore, nematic-nematic demixing occurs over a larger range of compositions at a given value of λ\lambda than found in Onsager theory. Both theories predict the same topologies of the phase diagrams. The partial nematic order parameters vary strongly with composition and indicate that the larger particles are more strongly ordered than the smaller particles
