    Workplace Based Assessment in Psychiatry

    Workplace based assessment refers to the assessment of working practices based on what doctors actually do in the workplace, and is predominantly carried out in the workplace itself. Assessment drives learning and it is therefore essential that workplace-based assessment focuses on important attributes rather than what is easiest to assess. Workplacebased assessment is usually competency based. Workplace based assesments may well facilitate and enhance various aspects of educational supervisions, including its structure, frequency and duration etc. The structure and content of workplace based assesments should be monitored to ensure that its benefits are maximised by remaining tailored to individual trainees' needs. Workplace based assesment should be used for formative and summative assessments. Several formative assessment methods have been developed for use in the workplace such as mini clinical evaluation exercise (mini-cex), evidence based journal club assesment and case based discussion, multi source feedback etc. This review discusses the need of workplace based assesments in psychiatry graduate education and introduces some of the work place based assesment methods

    Two Cases of Giant Epidermal Cyst Occurring in the Neck

    Epidermal cysts are the most common cysts of the skin. Aconventional epidermal cyst rarely reaches a size of more than 5 cm in diameter. We report on two cases of giant epidermal cyst occurring in the neck. One patient had a cyst measuring 12Ă—9Ă—9 cm and the other patient had a non-pulsatile, dome-shaped lesion in the neck, which measured 6Ă—5Ă—3 cm. The lesions were totally excised. Histopathologically, both were confirmed as giant epidermal cysts

    Manipulating the Hype addresses art’s reaction to the barrage of signs produced by the media. The paper researches contemporary art’s response to clichéd media stereotypes and elucidates artists’ multifaceted perspective on overtly obvious yet widely embraced paradigms marketed by the media. Contemporary art’s strategic reconfiguration of media stereotypes is a valuable introspection upon the superficiality and impracticability of advertising and entertainment industry constructs. By reconsidering the mediated image, art has the ability to inspire reevaluation of cultural values. The thesis additionally attempts to ascertain the reinterpretation of media stereotypes as a common thread linking principal art movements and historically significant artworks from around the world since 1960. How does contemporary art respond to the extensive cultural influence of the media? Is a reaction to mass media a thematic commonality linking contemporary artists in the age of globalization? Manipulating the Hype is a dual outcome investigation comprised of written thesis and studio practice. The written thesis combines experience from a lengthy professional practice with historical and theoretical research. The visual thesis consists of twelve photographic works taken at on the Big Island of Hawaii. The images juxtapose artificial icons of power from popular culture with the natural force of the active lava flow. The process of research discloses how the advertising and entertainment industries capitalize upon innate human desires through the manipulative proliferation of archetypal imagery. Furthermore, the thesis establishes the widespread retort to media clichés as a palpable commonality in studio practices worldwide. The findings in the research make evident that although contemporary art does not have sufficient influence to reform the media, it can heighten public awareness of media tactics

    Objective: The current trend in medical education is to abandon the experience-based traditional model and embrace the competency-based education model (CBE). The basic principle behind CBE is standardization. The first step in standardization is to determine what students must know, what they must accomplish, and what attitude they should display, and the establishment of educational goals. One of the goals of the Psychiatric Association of Turkey, Psychiatric Training Section is to standardize psychiatric training in Turkish medical schools. This study aimed to determine the current state of undergraduate psychiatric training in Turkish medical schools. Method: Questionnaires were sent to the psychiatry department chairs 01 41 medical schools. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistical methods. Results: Of the 41 department chairs that were sent the questionnaire, 29 (70%) completed and returned them, of which 16 (66.7%) reported that they had already defined goals and educational objectives for their undergraduate psychiatric training programs. The Core Education Program, prepared by the Turkish Medicine and Health Education Council, was predominately used at 9 (37.5%) medical schools. Pre-clinical and clinical training schedules varied between medical schools. In all, 3 of the medical schools did not offer internships in psychiatry. The majority of chairs emphasized the importance of mood disorders (49.9%) and anxiety disorders (40%), suggesting that these disorders should be treated by general practitioners. Computer technology was commonly used for lecturing; however, utilization of interactive and skill-based teaching methods was limited. The most commonly used evaluation methods were written examination (87.5%) during preclinical training and oral examination (91.6%) during clinical training. Conclusion: The most important finding of this study was the lack of a standardized curriculum for psychiatrictraining in Turkey. These social factors also have an effect on traumatized people’s mental health. Gender roles are affected these entire social context and mental disorders. War and migration frequently lead to increasing inequality between men and women. This article reviews the studies about refugee, asylum seeker and immigrant’s women mental health and gender roles.     Ethics Training in Psychiatry

    Although ethics training is one of the core components of psychiatric education, it is not sufficiently addressed in the curricula of many educational institutions. It is shown that many of the psychiatry residents received no ethics training in both residency and medical school. Predictably, over half of the psychiatry residents had faced an ethical dilemma that they felt unprepared to meet, and nearly all of them indicated ethics education would have helped them to solve this dilemma. In addition to learning about the fundamental topics of ethics like confidentiality, boundary violations, justice, benefience and nonmaleficence, psychiatrists must also learn to deal with other hidden ethical dilemmas which are mostly due to the changing world order. It is obvious that residency training should include a well developed ethics curriculum. However, some still believe that ethical principles cannot be taught and are formed in one’s early moral development. Accepting the fact that teaching ethics is difficult, we believe that it is getting easier with the new methods for teaching in medicine. These methods are clinical supervisions, rol-models, case studies, role playing, small group discussions, team based learning and “let’s talking medicine” groups which is a useful methods for discussing ethics dilemmas on daily practice and C.A.R.E (Core Beliefs, Actions, Reasons, Experience) which is a special training method for teaching ethics. In this review, the need of ethics training in residency curriculum will be discussed and new methods for teaching ethics will be proposed
