Period-Luminosity-Colour distribution and classification of Galactic oxygen-rich LPVs
The absolute K magnitudes and kinematic parameters of about 350 oxygen-rich
Long-Period Variable stars are calibrated, by means of an up-to-date
maximum-likelihood method, using Hipparcos parallaxes and proper motions
together with radial velocities and, as additional data, periods and V-K colour
indices. Four groups, differing by their kinematics and mean magnitudes, are
found. For each of them, we also obtain the distributions of magnitude, period
and de-reddened colour of the base population, as well as de-biased
period-luminosity-colour relations and their two-dimensional projections. The
SRa semiregulars do not seem to constitute a separate class of LPVs. The SRb
appear to belong to two populations of different ages. In a PL diagram, they
constitute two evolutionary sequences towards the Mira stage. The Miras of the
disk appear to pulsate on a lower-order mode. The slopes of their de-biased PL
and PC relations are found to be very different from the ones of the Oxygen
Miras of the LMC. This suggests that a significant number of so-called Miras of
the LMC are misclassified. This also suggests that the Miras of the LMC do not
constitute a homogeneous group, but include a significant proportion of
metal-deficient stars, suggesting a relatively smooth star formation history.
As a consequence, one may not trivially transpose the LMC period-luminosity

Off-plane motion of an oblate capsule in a simple shear flow

initially off the shear plane. We consider an oblate capsule with an aspect ratio of 0.5 and a strain-hardening
membrane. The three-dimensional fluid-structure interaction problem is solved numerically by coupling a
finite element method with a boundary integral method. The capsule converges towards the same mechanical
equilibrium state whatever the initial orientation. This equilibrium depends on the capillary number Ca, which
compares the viscous to the elastic forces and on the viscosity ratio between the internal and external fluids.
For = 1, the tumbling and swinging motions, observed when the revolution axis is initially in the shear plane,
are mechanically stable until Ca 1; when Ca is further increased, the capsule assumes the rolling motion
that is observed when its revolution axis is initially aligned with the vorticity axis. When is increased, the tumbling-to-swinging transition appears for higher Ca and the swinging-to-rolling transition for lower Ca. For
5, the swinging regime completely disappears: depending on Ca, it is then either the tumbling or the rolling motion that is the mechanical equilibrium state

Online fabrication and characterization of capsule populations with a flow-focusing microfluidic system
This paper was presented at the 3rd Micro and Nano Flows Conference (MNF2011), which was held at the Makedonia Palace Hotel, Thessaloniki in Greece. The conference was organised by Brunel University and supported by the Italian Union of Thermofluiddynamics, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, University of Thessaly, IPEM, the Process Intensification Network, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the Heat Transfer Society, HEXAG - the Heat Exchange Action Group, and the Energy Institute.We have designed a microfluidic system that combines a double flow-focusing setup for calibrated capsule fabrication with a microchannel for the characterization of their mechanical properties. The double flow-focusing system consists of a first Y junction to create the microdroplets and of a second Y junction to introduce the cross-linking agent allowing the membrane formation. The human serum albumin (HSA) aqueous solution for the dispersed solution, hydrophobic phase for the continuous solution and cross-linking agent solution are introduced by means of syringe pumps. A wavy channel after the second junction allows to control the reticulation time. A cylindrical microchannel then enables to deform and characterize the capsules formed. The mechanical properties of the capsule membrane are obtained by inverse analysis (Chu et al. 2011). The results show that the drop size increases with the flow rate ratio between the central and lateral channels and does not change much regardless of the flow rate of the reticulation phase. The mean shear modulus of the capsules fabricated after 23 s of reticulation is of the order of the surface tension of HSA solution with Dragoxat indicating that the reticulation time is too short to form an elastic membrane around the droplet. When the reticulation time is increased to 60 s, the membrane shear modulus is multiplied by a factor of 3 confirming that a solid membrane has formed around the drop
Unravelling social constructionism
Social constructionist research is an area of rapidly expanding influence that has brought together theorists from a range of different disciplines. At the same time, however, it has fuelled the development of a new set of divisions. There would appear to be an increasing uneasiness about the implications of a thoroughgoing constructionism, with some regarding it as both theoretically parasitic and politically paralysing. In this paper I review these debates and clarify some of the issues involved. My main argument is that social constructionism is not best understood as a unitary paradigm and that one very important difference is between what Edwards (1997) calls its ontological and epistemic forms. I argue that an appreciation of this distinction not only exhausts many of the disputes that currently divide the constructionist community, but also takes away from the apparent radicalism of much of this work
"Oh! What a tangled web we weave": Englishness, communicative leisure, identity work and the cultural web of the English folk morris dance scene
In this paper, we consider the relationship between Englishness and the English folk morris dance scene, considering how the latter draws from and reinforces the former. Englishness is considered within the context of the cultural web; a tool more often applied to business management but linked to a sociological viewpoint here. By doing so, we draw the connections between this structured business model and the cultural identity of Englishness. Then, we use the framework of the cultural web and theories of leisure, culture and identity to understand how morris dancers see their role as dancers and âcommunicative leisureâ agents in consciously defending Englishness, English traditions and inventions, the practices and traditions of folk and morris, and the various symbolic communities they inhabit. We argue that most morris dancers in our research become and maintain their leisured identities as dancers because they are attracted to the idea of tradition â even if that tradition is invented and open to change
Hipparcos period-luminosity relations for Miras and semiregular variables
We present period-luminosity diagrams for nearby Miras and semiregulars,
selecting stars with parallaxes better than 20 per cent and well-determined
periods. Using K-band magnitudes, we find two well-defined P-L sequences, one
corresponding to the standard Mira P-L relation and the second shifted to
shorter periods by a factor of about 1.9. The second sequence only contains
semiregular variables, while the Mira sequence contains both Miras and
semiregulars. Several semiregular stars show double periods in agreement with
both relations. The Whitelock evolutionary track is shown to fit the data,
indicating that the semiregulars are Mira progenitors. The transition between
the two sequences may correspond to a change in pulsation mode or to a change
in the stellar structure. Large amplitude pulsations leading to classical Mira
classification occur mainly near the tip of the local AGB luminosity function.Comment: 10 pages with figures, accepted by ApJ Letter
Photography as an act of collaboration
The camera is usually considered to be a passive tool under the control of the operator. This definition implicitly constrains how we use the medium, as well as how we look at â and what we see in â its interpretations of scenes, objects, events and âmomentsâ. This text will suggest another way of thinking about â and using â the photographic medium. Based on the evidence of photographic practice (mine and othersâ), I will suggest that, as a result of the ways in which the medium interprets, juxtaposes and renders the elements in front of the lens, the camera is capable of depicting scenes, events and moments that did not exist and could not have existed until brought into being by the act of photographing them. Accordingly, I will propose that the affective power of many photographs is inseparable from their âphotographicnessâ â and that the photographic medium should therefore be considered as an active collaborator in the creation of uniquely photographic images

This article appraises the debt that David Mitchellâs Cloud Atlas owes to the novels of Russell Hoban, including, but not limited to, Riddley Walker. After clearly mapping a history of Hobanâs philosophical perspectives and Mitchellâs inter-textual genre-impersonation practice, the article assesses the degree to which Mitchellâs metatextual methods indicate a nostalgia for by-gone radical aesthetics rather than reaching for new modes of its own. The article not only proposes several new backdrops against which Mitchellâs novel can be read but also conducts the first in-depth appraisal of Mitchellâs formal linguistic replication of Riddley Walker
