The MacLane class and the Eremenko-Lyubich class

In 1970 G. R. MacLane asked if it is possible for a locally univalent function in the class A to have an arc tract. This question remains open, but several results about it have been given. We significantly strengthen these results, in particular replacing the condition of local univalence by the more general condition that the set of critical values is bounded. Also, we adapt a recent powerful technique of C. J. Bishop in order to show that there is a function in the Eremenko-Lyubich class for the disc that is not in the class A

The Concepts of PISTIS and ELPIS and, AGAPEE in the Epistle to the Hebrews

We shall not attempt to solve the problem of authorship, nor, will the content and purpose of the epistle be treated beyond their relation to pistis, elpis, and agapee. Our problem is to determine: 1. what these words mean in the various passages in which they are used; 2. the role that these concepts play where they are present merely by implication. e. g., tha abiding city as part of the hope concept; 3. their relation to one another

Employment as a Price or a Prize of Equality: A Descriptive Analysis

    Get PDF
To put Scandinavian employment in perspective, we ask whether wage compression hampers employment rates, or not. We answer by reviewing the most important theoretical arguments and the most informative regularities across countries with different wage distributions. The pattern seems to be that countries with compressed wage distributions tend to have higher employment, and countries with higher wage inequality tend to have lower employment. This also holds when we consider the rate of labor force participation. In line with the theoretical arguments, coordination in wage bargaining seems to contribute to both employment expansion and wage compression. There is a clear positive correlation between coordination and employment even when we control for inequality, country, and year-specific effects

    The Equality Multiplier

    Get PDF
Equality can multiply due to the complementarity between wage determination and welfare spending. A more equal wage distribution fuels welfare generosity via political competition. A more generous welfare state fuels wage equality further via its support to weak groups in the labor market. Together the two effects generate a cumulative process that adds up to an important social multiplier. We focus on a political economic equilibrium which incorporates this mutual dependence between wage setting and welfare spending. It explains how almost equally rich countries differ in economic and social equality among their citizens and why countries cluster around different worlds of welfare capitalism---the Scandinavian model, the Anglo-Saxon model and the Continental model. Using data on 18 OECD countries over the period 1976-2002 we test the main predictions of the model and identify a sizeable magnitude of the equality multiplier. We obtain additional support for the cumulative complementarity between social spending and wage equality by applying another data set for the US over the period 1945-2001.

The width of Θ+\Theta^{+} for large NcN_{c} in chiral quark soliton model

    Get PDF
In the chiral quark soliton model the smallness of Θ+\Theta^+ width is due to the cancellation of the coupling constants which are of different order in NcN_c. We show that taking properly into account the flavor structure of relevant SU(3) representations for arbitrary number of colors enahnces the nonleading term by an additional factor of NcN_c, making the cancellation consistent with the NcN_c counting. Moreover, we show that, for the same reason, Θ+\Theta^+ width is suppressed by a group-theoretical factor O(1/Nc){\cal O}(1/N_c) with respect to Δ\Delta and discuss the NcN_c dependence of the phase space factors for these two decays.Comment: 9 pages, 3 eps figures, in v2 reference added, minor typos correcte
