    Hypofractionation in Hepatocellular Carcinoma – The Effect of Fractionation Size

    The use of stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has increased over the years. Several prospective studies have demonstrated its safety and efficacy, and randomised trials are underway. The advancement in technology has enabled the transition from three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy to highly focused SBRT. Liver damage is the primary limiting toxicity with radiation, with the incidence of grade 3 varying from 0 to 30%. The reported radiotherapy fractionation schedule for HCC, and in practice use, ranges from one to 10 fractions, based on clinician preference and technology available, tumour location and tumour size. This review summarises the safety and efficacy of various SBRT fractionation schedules for HCC

    Breaking Tri-bimaximal Mixing and Large θ13\theta_{13}

    The long baseline neutrino experiment, T2K, and the reactor experiment, Double Chooz will soon present new data. If we expect sinθ13\sin\theta_{13} to be 0.1-0.2, which is close to the present experimental upper bound, we should not persist in the paradigm of the tri-bimaximal mixing. We discuss breaking the tri-bimaximal mixing by adding a simple mass matrix, which could be derived from some non-Abelian discrete symmetries. It is found that sinθ13=0.10.2\sin\theta_{13}=0.1-0.2 is expected in our model independent analysis of the generalized mass matrix for the normal or inverted hierarchical neutrino mass spectrum. On the other hand, sin2θ23\sin^2\theta_{23} and sin2θ12\sin^2\theta_{12} are expected to be not far from 1/2 and 1/3, respectively. As a typical example, we also discuss the A4A_4 flavor model with the 1 and 1' flavons, which break the tri-bimaximal mixing considerably. In this modified version of the Altarelli and Feruglio model, sinθ13\sin\theta_{13} is predicted to be around 0.15 in the case of the normal hierarchical neutrino masses m3m2,m1m_3\gg m_2, m_1, and 0.2 in the case of the inverted hierarchy m3m2,m1m_3\ll m_2, m_1.     Neutrino Mass Sum-rules in Flavor Symmetry Models

    Four different neutrino mass sum-rules have been analyzed: these frequently arise in flavor symmetry models based on the groups A_4, S_4 or T', which are often constructed to generate tri-bimaximal mixing. In general, neutrino mass can be probed in three different ways, using beta decay, neutrino-less double beta decay and cosmology. The general relations between the corresponding three neutrino mass observables are well known. The sum-rules lead to relations between the observables that are different from the general case and therefore only certain regions in parameter space are allowed. Plots of the neutrino mass observables are given for the sum-rules, and analytical expressions for the observables are provided. The case of deviations from the exact sum-rules is also discussed, which can introduce new features. The sum-rules could be used to distinguish some of the many models in the literature, which all lead to the same neutrino oscillation results.Comment: 22 pages, 10 figures; matches the version published in Nuclear Physics

    Segmenting subregions of the human hippocampus on structural magnetic resonance image scans: An illustrated tutorial

    BACKGROUND: The hippocampus plays a central role in cognition, and understanding the specific contributions of its subregions will likely be key to explaining its wide-ranging functions. However, delineating substructures within the human hippocampus in vivo from magnetic resonance image scans is fraught with difficulties. To our knowledge, the extant literature contains only brief descriptions of segmentation procedures used to delineate hippocampal subregions in magnetic resonance imaging/functional magnetic resonance imaging studies. // METHODS: Consequently, here we provide a clear, step-by-step and fully illustrated guide to segmenting hippocampal subregions along the entire length of the human hippocampus on 3T magnetic resonance images. // RESULTS: We give a detailed description of how to segment the hippocampus into the following six subregions: dentate gyrus/Cornu Ammonis 4, CA3/2, CA1, subiculum, pre/parasubiculum and the uncus. Importantly, this in-depth protocol incorporates the most recent cyto- and chemo-architectural evidence and includes a series of comprehensive figures which compare slices of histologically stained tissue with equivalent 3T images. // CONCLUSION: As hippocampal subregion segmentation is an evolving field of research, we do not suggest this protocol is definitive or final. Rather, we present a fully explained and expedient method of manual segmentation which remains faithful to our current understanding of human hippocampal neuroanatomy. We hope that this 'tutorial'-style guide, which can be followed by experts and non-experts alike, will be a practical resource for clinical and research scientists with an interest in the human hippocampus

    Lie symmetries of nonlinear boundary value problems

    Nonlinear boundary value problems (BVPs) by means of the classical Lie symmetry method are studied. A new definition of Lie invariance for BVPs is proposed by the generalization of existing those on much wider class of BVPs. A class of two-dimensional nonlinear boundary value problems, modeling the process of melting and evaporation of metals, is studied in details. Using the definition proposed, all possible Lie symmetries and the relevant reductions (with physical meaning) to BVPs for ordinary differential equations are constructed. An example how to construct exact solution of the problem with correctly-specified coefficients is presented and compared with the results of numerical simulations published earlier.Comment: Published versio

    Combining observations from multiple platforms across the Kuroshio northeast of Luzon : a highlight on PIES data

The modifications to the existing methodology, applied to observations of the Kuroshio from a PIES array deployed northeast of Luzon, Philippines, consist of substituting a hydrography-based mean travel time field for the PIES-based mean field and using two distinct gravest empirical mode (GEM) lookup tables across the front that separate water masses of South China Sea and North Pacific origin. In addition, this study presents a method to use time-mean velocities from acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCPs) to reference (or “level”) the PIES-recorded pressures in order to obtain time series of absolute geostrophic velocity. Results derived from the PIES observations processed with the hydrography-based mean field and two GEMs are compared with hydrographic profiles sampled by Seagliders during the PIES observation period and with current velocity measured concurrently by a collocated ADCP array. The updated processing scheme leads to a 41% error decrease in the determination of the thermocline depth across the current, a 22% error decrease in baroclinic current velocity shear, and a 61% error decrease in baroclinic volume transports. The absolute volume transport time series derived from the leveled PIES array compares well with that obtained directly from the ADCPs with a root-mean-square difference of 3.0 Sv (1 Sv ≡ 106 m3 s–1), which is mainly attributed to the influence of ageostrophic processes on the ADCP-measured velocities that cannot be calculated from the PIES observations.The authors are supported by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) Departmental Research Initiative entitled Origins of the Kuroshio and Mindanao Currents (ONR Grant N00014-10-1-0397).     Non-detergent isolation of a cyanobacterial photosystem I using styrene maleic acid alternating copolymers

    Photosystem I (PSI) from the thermophilic cyanobacterium Thermosynechococcus elongatus (Te) is the largest membrane protein complex to have had its structure solved by X-ray diffraction. This trimeric complex has 36 protein subunits, over 380 non-covalently bound cofactors and a molecular weight of ∼1.2 MDa. Previously, it has been isolated and characterized in a detergent micelle using the non-ionic detergent n-dodecyl-β-D-maltoside (DDM). We have now succeeded in isolating this complex without the use of detergents, using styrene–maleic acid (SMA) alternating copolymer. Intriguingly, a partially esterified copolymer formulation (SMA 1440, Cray Valley) was found to be most efficient in cyanobacterial thylakoid membranes. A host of biochemical, biophysical and functional assays have been applied to characterize this non-detergent form of PSI, referred to as a SMA Lipid Particle (SMALP). The PSI-SMALP has a lower sedimentation coefficient compared to PSI-DDM, suggesting decreased density or a more extended particle shape. We show the 77 K fluorescence maximum for PSI is red shifted in PSI-SMALP compared to PSI-DDM, suggesting a more native orientation of PsaA/B associated chlorophyll. We report that PSI-SMALPs are functional despite the selective loss of one transmembrane subunit, PsaF. This loss may reflect a more labile interaction of the PSI core and PsaF, or a selective displacement during copolymer insertion and/or assembly. PSI-SMALP exhibited decreased reduction kinetics with native recombinant cytochromes c6, while non-native horse heart cytochrome c shows faster reduction of PSI-SMALP compared to PSI-DDM. This is the largest membrane protein isolated using SMA copolymers, and this study expands the potential use of this approach for the isolation and characterization of large supramolecular complexes

    Intrinsic Deviation from the Tri-bimaximal Neutrino Mixing in a Class of A_4 Flavor Models

    It is well known that the tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing pattern V_0 can be derived from a class of flavor models with the non-Abelian A_4 symmetry. We point out that small corrections to V_0, which are inherent in the A_4 models and arise from both the charged-lepton and neutrino sectors, have been omitted in the previous works. We show that such corrections may lead the 3 \times 3 neutrino mixing matrix V to a non-unitary deviation from V_0, but they cannot result in a nonzero value of \theta_13 or any new CP-violating phases. Current experimental constraints on the unitarity of V allow us to constrain the model parameters to some extent.Comment: 11 pages, no figures; a reference added, accepted for publication in Phys.
