Distributed Successive Approximation Coding using Broadcast Advantage: The Two-Encoder Case

    Get PDF
Traditional distributed source coding rarely considers the possible link between separate encoders. However, the broadcast nature of wireless communication in sensor networks provides a free gossip mechanism which can be used to simplify encoding/decoding and reduce transmission power. Using this broadcast advantage, we present a new two-encoder scheme which imitates the ping-pong game and has a successive approximation structure. For the quadratic Gaussian case, we prove that this scheme is successively refinable on the {sum-rate, distortion pair} surface, which is characterized by the rate-distortion region of the distributed two-encoder source coding. A potential energy saving over conventional distributed coding is also illustrated. This ping-pong distributed coding idea can be extended to the multiple encoder case and provides the theoretical foundation for a new class of distributed image coding method in wireless scenarios.Comment: In Proceedings of the 48th Annual Allerton Conference on Communication, Control and Computing, University of Illinois, Monticello, IL, September 29 - October 1, 201

Marc Rothemund’s film Sophie Scholl (2005) is the story of a woman who, with her brother and a group of friends, undertook to rise up against Nazism in a time marked by violence, the suppression of freedom and, above all, the perversion by the Nazis of the German state and conscience. The film is also linked to the incisive boost given by historiography to our understanding of this period and the power of cinema to influence a representation in our collective memory. Even so, cinema seeks not to replace history but to complete it in another way of seeing the past. Sophie Scholl is, in short, a framework for social and human reflection with intense emotional connotations that teaches a historical and visual lesson about totalitarianism.Publicad

Cinema´s suggestion and symbolism ability does, no doubt, lead us to build an imaginary which forms the way in which a society defines itself or is represented before others. In this case, through the analysis of the films Walk on water (2004), Lemon tree (2008) and Une bouteille à la mer (2008), the way in which the palestin israeli conflict is introduced is glimpsed, showing how the seventh art deals with this confrontation and the perspective it offers to build bridges between this two societies in constant competition

The Beauty of the Commons: Optimal Load Sharing by Base Station Hopping in Wireless Sensor Networks

In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), the base station (BS) is a critical sensor node whose failure causes severe data losses. Deploying multiple fixed BSs improves the robustness, yet requires all BSs to be installed with large batteries and large energy-harvesting devices due to the high energy consumption of BSs. In this paper, we propose a scheme to coordinate the multiple deployed BSs such that the energy supplies required by individual BSs can be substantially reduced. In this scheme, only one BS is selected to be active at a time and the other BSs act as regular sensor nodes. We first present the basic architecture of our system, including how we keep the network running with only one active BS and how we manage the handover of the role of the active BS. Then, we propose an algorithm for adaptively selecting the active BS under the spatial and temporal variations of energy resources. This algorithm is simple to implement but is also asymptotically optimal under mild conditions. Finally, by running simulations and real experiments on an outdoor testbed, we verify that the proposed scheme is energy-efficient, has low communication overhead and reacts rapidly to network changes

Hommes Fatals: Masculine Destructiveness in Alfred Hitchcock´s Rebecca (1940) and Sam Taylor-Johnson´s Fifty Shades of Grey (2015)

Femmes fatales have been and are still nowadays represented and labelled as inherently or innately evil figures who, by means of their beauty, lure and seduce men in order to deliberately destroy them. Female deadly figures were treated even in ancient times and in the Bible; even nowadays, after the film noir genre catapulted femmes fatales to fame, different representations of these characters can be seen on screen. Nevertheless, this present dissertation attempts to analyse and debate the possible existence of a male counterpart to these historically dangerous creatures, that is to say, the homme fatal. More precisely, two hommes fatals instances will be the object of this study: Maxim de Winter in Alfred Hitchcock’s Rebecca (1940) and Christian Grey in Sam Taylor-Johnson’s Fifty Shades of Grey (2015). I contend that these two characters share five common features, most of which contribute to the romanticisation of their ‘fatality’. Destructiveness appears to be essential when describing their behaviour towards their carefully selected victims, but also towards themselves. Their destructive attitudes, however, seem to be recreations of what the hommes fatals experienced in previous encounters with one or more femmes fatales. Said experiences maim Maxim’s and Christian’s emotional and mental dimensions to the point that they simply cannot stop themselves and have to engage in the same abusive behavioural patterns, as their impulses become compulsions. Both characters tend to choose a very specific type of woman as their victim, who is then subjected to different forms of control by the hommes fatals. The final stage of the gradual process of manipulation is to rip up the victim´s very identity. These respected, affluent men find a perfect alibi in their social status: they go unpunished and no one ever suspects their ‘fatality’. Finally, the role of consensual victims played by Mrs. De Winter and Anastasia Steele, in love with their tormentors, is vital to understand the obvious romanticisation of these particular version of hommes fatals. I conclude by arguing that the homme fatal´s behaviour is glamorised as it participates of the patriarchal discourse which believes these types of men are appealing to women

External surface anatomy of the postfolding human embryo: Computer-aided, three-dimensional reconstruction of printable digital specimens

Opportunities for clinicians, researchers, and medical students to become acquainted with the three-dimensional (3D) anatomy of the human embryo have historically been limited. This work was aimed at creating a collection of digital, printable 3D surface models demonstrating major morphogenetic changes in the embryo's external anatomy, including typical features used for external staging. Twelve models were digitally reconstructed based on optical projection tomography, high-resolution episcopic microscopy and magnetic resonance imaging datasets of formalin-fixed specimens of embryos of developmental stages 12 through 23, that is, stages following longitudinal and transverse embryo folding. The reconstructed replica reproduced the external anatomy of the actual specimens in great detail, and the progress of development over stages was recognizable in a variety of external anatomical features and bodily structures, including the general layout and curvature of the body, the pharyngeal arches and cervical sinus, the physiological gut herniation, and external genitalia. In addition, surface anatomy features commonly used for embryo staging, such as distinct steps in the morphogenesis of facial primordia and limb buds, were also apparent. These digital replica, which are all provided for 3D visualization and printing, can serve as a novel resource for teaching and learning embryology and may contribute to a better appreciation of the human embryonic development

High mountains are among the regions most affected by climate change. The complex network of interactions between climate, biological, and sociocultural structures in these regions is being altered by the changing climate. In this work, we try to explore the future challenges for these unique regions. We analyse why they are important and what problems they are facing in today’s climate and political scenario, with a special focus on the Pyrenees. © 2022, Universitat de Valencia.
