Jets and produced particles in pp collisions from SPS to RHIC energies for nuclear applications
Higher-order pQCD corrections play an important role in the reproduction of
data at high transverse momenta in the energy range 20 GeV GeV. Recent calculations of photon and pion production in collisions
yield detailed information on the next-to-leading order contributions. However,
the application of these results in proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus
collisions is not straightforward. The study of nuclear effects requires a
simplified understanding of the output of these computations. Here we summarize
our analysis of recent calculations, aimed at handling the NLO results by
introducing process and energy-dependent factors.Comment: 4 pages with 5 eps figures include
On the possibility of q-scaling in high energy production processes
It has been noticed recently that transverse momenta (p_T) distributions
observed in high energy production processes exhibit remarkably universal
scaling behaviour. This is the case when a suitable variable replaces the usual
p_T. On the other hand, it is also widely known that transverse momentum
distributions in general follow a power-like Tsallis distribution, rather than
an exponential Boltzmann-Gibbs, with a (generally energy dependent)
nonextensivity parameter q. Here we show that it is possible to choose a
suitable variable such that all the data can be fitted by the same Tsallis
distribution (with the same, energy independent value of the q-parameter). Thus
they exhibit q-scaling.Comment: Final version, accepted by J.Phys.
Jet Tomography in the Forward Direction at RHIC
Hadron production at high- displays a strong suppression pattern in a
wide rapidity region in heavy ion collisions at RHIC energies. This finding
indicates the presence of strong final state effects for both transversally and
longitudinally traveling partons, namely induced energy loss. We have developed
a perturbative QCD based model to describe hadron production in collision,
which can be combined with the Glauber -- Gribov model to describe hadron
production in heavy ion collisions. Investigating and collisions
at energy GeV at mid-rapidity, we find the opacity of the
strongly interacting hot matter to be proportional to the participant nucleon
number. Considering forward rapidities, the suppression pattern indicates the
formation of a longitudinally contracted dense deconfined zone in central heavy
ion collisions. We determine parameters for the initial geometry from the
existing data.Comment: 6 pages for Hot Quarks '06 Conferenc
VHMPID: a new detector for the ALICE experiment at LHC
This article presents the basic idea of VHMPID, an upgrade detector for the
ALICE experiment at LHC, CERN. The main goal of this detector is to extend the
particle identification capabilities of ALICE to give more insight into the
evolution of the hot and dense matter created in Pb-Pb collisions. Starting
from the physics motivations and working principles the challenges and current
status of development is detailed.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures. To be published in EPJ Web of Conference
Large mass dileptons from the passage of jets through quark gluon plasma
We calculate the emission of large mass dileptons originating from the
annihilation of quark jets passing through quark gluon plasma. Considering
central collisions of heavy nuclei at SPS, RHIC and LHC energies, we find that
the yield due to the jet-plasma interaction gets progressively larger as the
collision energy increases. We find it to be negligible at SPS energies, of the
order of the Drell-Yan contribution and much larger than the normal thermal
yield at RHIC energies and up to a factor of ten larger than the Drell-Yan
contribution at LHC energies. An observation of this new dilepton source would
confirm the occurrence of jet-plasma interactions and of conditions suitable
for jet-quenching to take place.Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures; references added, improved calculation,

High-p_T pion and kaon production in relativistic nuclear collisions
High-p_T pion and kaon production is studied in relativistic proton-proton,
proton-nucleus, and nucleus-nucleus collisions in a wide energy range. Cross
sections are calculated based on perturbative QCD, augmented by a
phenomenological transverse momentum distribution of partons (``intrinsic
k_T''). An energy dependent width of the transverse momentum distribution is
extracted from pion and charged hadron production data in
proton-proton/proton-antiproton collisions. Effects of multiscattering and
shadowing in the strongly interacting medium are taken into account.
Enhancement of the transverse momentum width is introduced and parameterized to
explain the Cronin effect. In collisions between heavy nuclei, the model
over-predicts central pion production cross sections (more significantly at
higher energies), hinting at the presence of jet quenching. Predictions are
made for proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC energies.Comment: 26 pages in Latex, 19 EPS figure
A consistent first-order model for relativistic heat flow
This paper revisits the problem of heat conduction in relativistic fluids,
associated with issues concerning both stability and causality. It has long
been known that the problem requires information involving second order
deviations from thermal equilibrium. Basically, any consistent first-order
theory needs to remain cognizant of its higher-order origins. We demonstrate
this by carrying out the required first-order reduction of a recent variational
model. We provide an analysis of the dynamics of the system, obtaining the
conditions that must be satisfied in order to avoid instabilities and acausal
signal propagation. The results demonstrate, beyond any reasonable doubt, that
the model has all the features one would expect of a real physical system. In
particular, we highlight the presence of a second sound for heat in the
appropriate limit. We also make contact with previous work on the problem by
showing how the various constraints on our system agree with previously
established results.Comment: RevTeX, 1 eps Figur
Photon Production in Hot and Dense Strongly Interacting Matter
This text is meant as an introduction to the theoretical physics of photon
emission in hot and dense strongly interacting matter, the principal
application being relativistic nuclear collisions. We shall cover some of the
results and techniques appropriate for studies at SPS, RHIC, and LHC energiesComment: 35 pages, accepted for publication, Landolt-Boernstein Volume 1-23
Thermal Dileptons at LHC
We predict dilepton invariant-mass spectra for central 5.5 ATeV Pb-Pb
collisions at LHC. Hadronic emission in the low-mass region is calculated using
in-medium spectral functions of light vector mesons within hadronic many-body
theory. In the intermediate-mass region thermal radiation from the Quark-Gluon
Plasma, evaluated perturbatively with hard-thermal loop corrections, takes
over. An important source over the entire mass range are decays of correlated
open-charm hadrons, rendering the nuclear modification of charm and bottom
spectra a critical ingredient.Comment: 2 pages, 2 figures, contributed to Workshop on Heavy Ion Collisions

Inclusive J/Ï production at mid-rapidity in pp collisions at âs = 5.02 TeV
Inclusive J/Ï production is studied in minimum-bias proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of s = 5.02 TeV by ALICE at the CERN LHC. The measurement is performed at mid-rapidity (|y| < 0.9) in the dielectron decay channel down to zero transverse momentum pT, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of Lint = 19.4 ± 0.4 nbâ1. The measured pT-integrated inclusive J/Ï production cross sec- tion is dÏ/dy = 5.64 ± 0.22(stat.) ± 0.33(syst.) ± 0.12(lumi.) ÎŒb. The pT-differential cross section d2Ï/dpTdy is measured in the pT range 0â10 GeV/c and compared with state-of- the-art QCD calculations. The J/Ï ăpTă and ăpT2ă are extracted and compared with results obtained at other collision energies. [Figure not available: see fulltext.]
