Enabling virtual radio functions on software defined radio for future wireless networks
Today's wired networks have become highly flexible, thanks to the fact that an increasing number of functionalities are realized by software rather than dedicated hardware. This trend is still in its early stages for wireless networks, but it has the potential to improve the network's flexibility and resource utilization regarding both the abundant computational resources and the scarce radio spectrum resources. In this work we provide an overview of the enabling technologies for network reconfiguration, such as Network Function Virtualization, Software Defined Networking, and Software Defined Radio. We review frequently used terminology such as softwarization, virtualization, and orchestration, and how these concepts apply to wireless networks. We introduce the concept of Virtual Radio Function, and illustrate how softwarized/virtualized radio functions can be placed and initialized at runtime, allowing radio access technologies and spectrum allocation schemes to be formed dynamically. Finally we focus on embedded Software-Defined Radio as an end device, and illustrate how to realize the placement, initialization and configuration of virtual radio functions on such kind of devices
Overexpression of FurA in Anabaena sp. PCC 7120 Reveals New Targets for This Regulator Involved in Photosynthesis, Iron Uptake and Cellular Morphology
Previous genomic analyses of the filamentous nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. PCC 7120 have identified three ferric uptake regulator (Fur) homologs with low sequence identities and probably different functions in the cell. FurA is a constitutive protein that shares the highest homology with Fur from heterotrophic bacteria and appears to be essential for invitro growth. In this study, we have analysed the effects of FurA overexpression on the Anabaena sp. phenotype and investigated which of the observed alterations were directly operated by FurA. Overexpression of the regulator led to changes in cellular morphology, resulting in shorter filaments with rounded cells of different sizes. The furA-overexpressing strain showed a slower photoautotrophic growth and a marked decrease in the oxygen evolution rate. Overexpression of the regulator also decreased both catalase and superoxide dismutase activities, but did not lead to an increase in the levels of intracellular reactive oxygen species. By combining phenotypic studies, reverse transcription-PCR analyses and electrophoretic mobility shift assays, we identified three novel direct targets of FurA, including genes encoding a siderophore outer membrane transporter (schT), bacterial actins (mreBCD) and the PSII reaction center protein D1 (psbA). The affinity of FurA for these novel targets was markedly affected by the absence of divalent metal ions, confirming previous evidence of a critical role for the metal co-repressor in the function of the regulator invivo. The results unravel new cellular processes modulated by FurA, supporting its role as a global transcriptional regulator in Anabaena sp. PCC 712
Proteolytic Cleavage of a Spectrin-Related Protein by Calcium-Dependent Protease in Neurospora crassa
To investigate the functional significance of a cytoskeletal spectrin-like protein, we studied its localization pattern in Neurospora crassa and sought the answer to whether it is a substrate for another apically localized protein, the calcium-dependent protease (CDP II). Immunoblots of crude extracts from exponentially growing mycelia, separated by one- and two-dimensional sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis using antichicken α/β-spectrin antibodies, revealed a single band of approximately relative mass (Mr) 100 kDa with an isoeletric point (pI) in the range of 6.5 to 7.0. Despite rigorous efforts, we could not confirm the presence of an Mr 240- to 220-kDa spectrin-like protein in N. crassa. The immunofluorescence- and immunogold-labeling Mr 100-kDa protein showed its predominance along the plasma membrane of the conidia during the swelling phase of germination. In contrast, in the germ tubes and the growing hyphae, the localization was polarized and concentrated mainly in the apical region. The in vitro proteolysis experiments showed that indeed this protein is a preferred substrate of CDP II which is, as mentioned previously, also localized in the apical regions of the hyphae. Periodically modulated geometric and electronic structure of graphene on Ru(0001)
We report here on a method to fabricate and characterize highly perfect,
periodically rippled graphene monolayers and islands, epitaxially grown on
single crystal metallic substrates under controlled UHV conditions. The
periodicity of the ripples is dictated by the difference in lattice parameters
of graphene and substrate, and, thus, it is adjustable. We characterize its
perfection at the atomic scale by means of STM and determine its electronic
structure in the real space by local tunnelling spectroscopy. There are
periodic variations in the geometric and electronic structure of the graphene
monolayer. We observe inhomogeneities in the charge distribution, i.e a larger
occupied Density Of States at the higher parts of the ripples. Periodically
rippled graphene might represent the physical realization of an ordered array
of coupled graphene quantum dots. The data show, however, that for rippled
graphene on Ru(0001) both the low and the high parts of the ripples are
metallic. The fabrication of periodically rippled graphene layers with
controllable characteristic length and different bonding interactions with the
substrate will allow a systematic experimental test of this fundamental

Stability conditions and positivity of invariants of fibrations
We study three methods that prove the positivity of a natural numerical
invariant associated to parameter families of polarized varieties. All
these methods involve different stability conditions. In dimension 2 we prove
that there is a natural connection between them, related to a yet another
stability condition, the linear stability. Finally we make some speculations

An increase in nitric oxide produced by rat peritoneal neutrophils is not involved in cell apoptosis
Polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) obtained from carrageenin-stimulated peritoneal cavities of rats, but not blood PMN, spontaneously produced nitric oxide (NO) when incubated in vitro. Incubation of the cells with the NO synthase inhibitors, L-imino-ethyl-L-ornithine (L-NIO) or NG-monomethyl-L-arginine (L-NMMA), inhibited NO production. This inhibition could be reversed by L-arginine. Incubation of PMN with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) failed to enhance NO production. Pretreatment of the rats with dexamethasone (DEXA) prior to carrageenin injection or incubation of PMN with the glucocorticoid in vitro partially inhibited the spontaneous release of NO. On the other hand, when PMN obtained from DEXA pretreated rats were incubated in vitro with DEXA, NO synthase activity and hence NO generation were almost abolished. A similar inhibition was also observed following the addition of L-NIO or cycloheximide to cultures of carrageenin-elicited PMN. The NO production by PMN did not appear to be related to cell viability or apoptosis. Indeed, neither the blockade of NO generation by L-NIO nor the incubation of the neutrophils with a NO donor, S-nitroso-acetylpenicillamine (SNAP) modified the pattern of LDH release or DNA fragmentation. In summary, it appears that PMN migration triggers a continuous NO synthesis, and that NO produced by these cells is not related to their apoptosis
Phylogeographic patterns of Capreolus capreolus in the centre of the Iberian peninsula
One hundred and one samples of muscle tissue were obtained from roe deer in the centre of the Iberian peninsula. We compared the sequences of the control region (D–loop) of the mitochondrial DNA of these samples with those obtained in previous studies. Adding the information from microsatellite markers and derived genetic parameters to study the population structure, we found a philopatric structure, with females maintaining mitochondrial haplotype diversity, while males showed a pattern of genome homogenization. The population can thus be considered panmictic. Different times of palaeohistory of the species may explain these results: glacial–interglacial stages of the Pleistocene and the reduction and recovery of populations throughout the 20th century
