    Get PDF
This study investigates if Cape Verde can be successful in the production of English language textbooks. It also will be looked at the main reasons why locally produced textbooks would be advantageous. The findings of the study reveal that the production of an English language textbook for Cape Verde is the best solution and that it can be successful. We also find out that Capeverdean English teachers have professional competence and pedagogical qualification to be engaged in this practice. However, significant assistance will be necessary for bringing experts to the country to supervise the process. It also will be necessary to find financial support to put it in practice

How and when immersion and distancing are useful in emotion focused therapy for depression

Objective: The potential benefit or harm of immersion (egocentric perspective) and distancing (observer perspective) on negative experiences are unclear and have not been empirically investigated in therapy. This is a first exploratory study aimed to analyze and compare the perspectives adopted on reflection (immersion and distancing) of negative experiences across therapy and the relationship between them and depressive symptoms in contrasting therapeutic outcomes of emotion-focused therapy (EFT). Method: Three good-outcomes cases and three poor-outcomes cases of EFT, diagnosed with mild to moderate depression at the beginning of therapy, were randomly selected. Immersion and distancing on negative experiences were analyzed using the measure of immersed and distanced speech. The depressive symptoms were assessed by the Beck Depression Inventory-II. Results: Significant differences across sessions were only found in the good-outcome cases which showed a significant decrease of immersion and an increase of distancing, and this evolution pattern was found related to the reduction of symptoms. Moreover, at the beginning of therapy, distancing was higher in the poor-outcome cases rather than in the good-outcome cases. Conclusion: The progressive and significant evolution from higher immersion at the initial phase to higher distancing in the final phase may be helpful in EFT for depression.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Flexibility between immersion and distancing: A dynamic pattern with effect on depressive symptoms

    Get PDF
Objective: Recent studies on immersion (first-person perspective) and distancing (third-person perspective) in psychotherapy have shown the potential of both perspectives in the treatment of depression. High levels of change were associated with transitions between immersion and distancing, suggesting that a dynamic pattern between them may result in a more adaptive view of reality. This study aimed to assess if higher flexibility between these perspectives, during clientś reflection on negative experiences in the intermediate phase, is associated with lower levels of depressive symptoms at the end of treatment. Method: We analyzed the flexibility through frequency and magnitude of transitions between immersion and distancing, in representative sessions of the intermediate phase of therapy in 17 cases with depression. Results: The results showed that the higher frequency and lower magnitude in the intermediate phase predicted lower levels of depressive symptoms at the end of treatment. Conclusion: Immersion and distancing seem to work as dynamic processes, and greater flexibility between them in intermediate phase of therapy, characterized by frequent and fast transitions between the two perspectives, may be an adaptive pattern due to its effect on post treatment depressive symptoms.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The main problems caused by leprosy are physical incapacities. This study evaluated the level of patients' incapacity in treatment and in discharge in 11 municipal districts of the14th Regional of Health of Paraná, at the same time it promoted discussion and qualified nursing professionals of local teams. It was verified that 79.8% of the population evaluated presented some degree of incapacity and that some of the professionals ignored the evaluation technique. The percentage of patients with incapacity levels I and II was high, fact that corroborates the late diagnosis of cases. The need of a permanent self-care process associated to polichemotherapy and continuous evaluation of new and old cases in order to avoid the illness physical incapacities is highlighted. <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The detection of sub-clinical breast lesions has increased with screening mammography. Biopsy techniques can offer precision and agility in its execution, as well as patient comfort. This trial compares radioguided occult lesion localization (ROLL) and wire-guided localization (WL) of breast lesions. We investigate if a procedure at the ambulatorial level (ROLL) could lead to a better aesthetic result and less postoperative pain. In addition, we intend to demonstrate the efficacy of radioguided localization and removal of occult breast lesions using radiopharmaceuticals injected directly into the lesions and correlate radiological and histopathological findings.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>One hundred and twenty patients were randomized into two groups (59 WL and 61 ROLL). The patients were requested to score the cosmetic appearance of their breast after surgery, and a numerical rating scale was used to measure pain on the first postoperative day. Clearance margins were considered at ≥ 10 mm for invasive cancer, ≥ 5 mm for ductal carcinoma <it>in situ</it>, and ≥ 1 mm for benign disease. Patients were subsequently treated according to the definitive histological result. When appropriate, different statistical tests were used in order to test the significance between the two groups, considering a P value < 0.05 as statistically significant.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>WL and ROLL located all the occult breast lesions successfully. In the ROLL group, the specimen volume was smaller and there were more cases with clear margins (P < 0.05). There were significant differences in mean time of hospital stay between WL and ROLL (21.42 vs. 2.56 hours), but not in operative time (39.4 vs. 29.9 minutes). There were significant differences in the subjective ease of the procedures as rated by the patients (cosmetic outcomes and postoperative pain).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>ROLL is an effective method for the excision of non-palpable breast lesions. It enables more careful planning of the cutaneous incision, leading to better aesthetic results, less postoperative symptoms, and smaller volumes of excised tissue.</p

The present research analyze, through a functionalist perspective, the anaphorical pronouns “that” in relative clauses. It will work a corpus composed by student’s writings studying in sixth grades of High School, having as objective, too, point the influence that the oral language has in their writings. The analyse of the datas allows to confirm the user of the language get to strategies of structuration of the relatives, going against the formal way: becomes generic “that” as na universal relative and get to a personal pronoun to have the anaphotical function, or let empty the structural part of the anaphora pronoun (no anaphora). In this way, confirm our hypothese that the pronominal anaphora works as a produtive resource of the language that becomes easier, in the pragmatic level, the process of information. It was possible to conclude, then, the use of the anaphorical in relative clauses need a revision in the teaching of portuguese language in High School

The main of this work was to evaluate the influence of the temperature, pH and enzyme concentration in the hydrolysis of mechanically separated chicken meat (MSCM) with and without previous heat treatment. The influence of pH (8.08 to 8.92), temperature (50.75ºC to 59.25ºC), enzyme concentration (0.38 to 4.62%) and reaction time (0.17 to 5.83 h) on the degree of hydrolysis and protein concentration were evaluated. The conditions that promoted the best degree of hydrolysis where 58°C, pH 8.5, enzyme concentration of 4.62 and reaction time of 3 h without previous heat treatment. The hydrolysed presented IC50 of 4 mg/mL. The MSCM hydrolyzed in these conditions is alternative of product with antioxidant properties with potential of application in foods.

AdoPt Project: adoptive families' strengths, difficulties and service needs: a portuguese follow-up study

    Get PDF
Introduction:Together with many positive experiences, adoption brings stress and difficulties. In Portugal, about 1/15 preadoption placements is disrupted. In Europe, 1 in 25 adoptions fail. International data show that around 1/4 adoptions undergo major difficulties that threaten stability/permanence. Portuguese research on these matters is currently very limited. Aims: The goal of this poster is to present a recently funded project (AdoPt) aiming at identifying risk/protective factors of postadoption instability/permanence in variables related to adoptees, adopters, parent-child relationships, formal and informal sources of support, and developing, val- idating and sustaining an online survey system to monitor postadoption pathways and needs. Method:Using a cross-sequential design, 3 cohorts of 90 children each, adopted in 2013, 2016 and 2019, will be followed for 3 years with data collection times 12 months apart. Each cohort will include children adopted at ages 0-2, 3-5 and 6-10, ensuring a final age-span of adoptees between 2 and 20 years. Data will be collected online, using adopters and professionals as informants. At the end, data from a representative sub-sample of 90 families will be collected at in-home visits to cross-validate online data (adoptees will also participate). A user-friendly on- line monitoring and follow-up system will be set up. Families will be provided with feedback and educational resources. Annual sessions with adoption professionals will provide the opportunity to share ongoing findings and design new services. Expected Results:With ground-breaking innovations, AdoPt will respond to the need of sound knowledge/better practices for the development of urgently needed postadoption services in Portugal.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
