I casi Englaro e Welby: diritto e fine della vita fuori dei ‘casi di scuola’

Lo scritto prende in considerazione i casi giudiziari Englaro e Welby, muovendo dalla sentenza della Corte di Cassazione sul primo dei due casi per enuclearne i principi che ne informano lo schema argomentativo, principi sottesi anche alla sentenza sul caso Welby. L’uno e l’altro caso vengono presi in considerazione sotto il profilo penalistico, considerando anche la recente conclusione in sede penale del caso Englaro. Lo scritto si sofferma sulle differenze ‘fattuali’ tra i due casi e sulle conseguenze giuridico – penali che ne derivano sul piano della ‘posizione di garanzia’ del medico

New Interpretation of Galileo\u2019s Arthritis and Blindness

Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) complained of several disorders during his life, the most important of which were chronic arthritic pains and bilateral blindness. These symptoms might result from an immune rheumatic disease, namely reactive arthritis (urethritis, uveitis, arthritis), when Galileo started suffering with an episode of fever in June 1593. Padua University owns the fifth lumbar vertebra of the great scientist and we performed a series of anthropological and radiographic analyses on it. The anthropological measurements showed that the shape of the vertebra was normal as to exclude significant diseases. The study through radiography and Computed Tomography showed only a mild arthrosis documented by small osteophytosis. Eventually the disease evolved into blindness with a pannus restricting the pupils (uveitis). These findings support the occurrence of reactive arthritis. Alternatively to urethral infection, Galileo could have suffered from Chlamydia pneumoniae infection in 1593, which was complicated by reactive arthritis a couple of weeks later. Thereafter he complained several episodes of recurrent arthritis, which eventually culminated into uveitis and bilateral blindness

Nursing Education: conceptualizing a pedagogical project from the view of professors

Objective: To understand the pedagogical project concept of the professors of the Paulista School of Nursing, and to identify the challenges and the limits faced by them during its development. Methods: Qualitative study, in the oral history thematic modality. Using semi-structured interviews, the narratives of six professors who participated in, at least, half of the meetings for the pedagogical development were obtained. The statements were recorded, interpreted text transcribed, recreated and analyzed, respecting the methodological steps and ethical precepts. The Social World Theory of Pierre Bourdieu was used as a reference for analysis. Results: The concept of the pedagogical project was limited to the curriculum frameworkstraining of the professors is the main difficulty for the planning phase of the paradigmatic change. Conclusion: Professors value the pedagogical project development, but do not advance the proposition because they are steeped in previous models that support workload and organization according to specialty.Objetivo: Apreender o conceito de Projeto Pedagógico dos professores da Escola Paulista de Enfermagem e identificar os desafios e os limites enfrentados por eles durante sua elaboração. Métodos: Estudo qualitativo, na modalidade História Oral Temática. Por meio de entrevistas semiestruturadas obtiveram-se as narrativas de seis professores que participaram de, no mínimo, metade dos encontros para essa construção. Os depoimentos foram gravados, transcritos, transcriados e analisados, respeitando-se as etapas do método e os preceitos éticos. Foi utilizada a Teoria de Mundo Social de Pierre Bourdieu como referencial de análise. Resultados: O conceito de Projeto Pedagógico ficou circunscrito à grade curricular e a formação docente é a principal dificuldade para a mudança de paradigma na ação do planejamento. ‘Original Sin’ in Latin America (2000-2015): Theory, Empirical Assessment and Alternatives.

 The matter of the ‘original sin’, the inability to borrow abroad in domestic currency, came to the centre of the academic discussion after the dramatic episodes in Asia, Russia and Latin America. According to this international framework, this paper is an empirical analysis of ‘original sin’ for six Latin American countries based on the index (OSIN3) developed by Haussmann and Panizza (2003). This paper finds that the situation for some countries have been improving reflecting a reduction of the index. This fact could be related to recent economic policies policies related to an ‘abstinence’ rather than ‘redemption’, an attitude seen as a response to the debt crisis. Finally, the paper focuses on possible policy alternatives that could be adopted to overcome the ‘original sin’ phenomenon, it includes North-South and South-South cooperation and a multilateral arrangement. However, such alternatives are limited to feasibility mainly due to the turbulent political and economic scenario in the region

Low-power laser therapy accelerates peripheral nerves' regeneration

Há evidências de que a terapia com o laser pode estimular a regeneração de nervos e esta hipótese foi testada em ratos. Uma lesão por esmagamento controlado foi produzida no nervo isquiático de 20 ratos Wistar, metade dos quais foram submetidos a irradiação efetiva com o laser de arseneto de gálio (AsGa) e a outra metade a irradiação simulada, durante dez dias consecutivos, começando no primeiro dia pós-operatório. Os resultados foram avaliados com três semanas pela medida do índice funcional do isquiático (IFC) em intervalos semanais e pela medida do número total de fibras nervosas e da densidade de fibras dos nervos, após o sacrifício dos animais na terceira semana, com o nível de significância de 5% (p<0.05). Observou-se melhora progressiva do IFC tanto nos nervos irradiados como nos controles (69% e 45%, respectivamente), com diferença significante entre ambos na segunda semana (p=0,04). A densidade de fibras aumentou para os nervos irradiados e diminuiu para os nervos controle, a diferença entre ambos sendo significante (p=0,001). Os autores concluem que a terapia com o laser de baixa intensidade efetivamente acelera a regeneração do nervo isquiático do rato.There are evidences that laser therapy may stimulate nerve regeneration and this hypothesis was tested in rats. A controlled crush injury was produced on the sciatic nerve of 20 Wistar rats, half of which submitted to effective Ga-As laser irradiation and the other half to simulated irradiation for 10 consecutive days beginning on the first postoperative day. Results were evaluated at three weeks postoperatively by measuring the sciatic functional index (SFI) at weekly intervals and the total number of nerve fibers and nerve fiber density of the sciatic nerve at three weeks (p<0.05). The SFI progressively improved for both irradiated and control nerves (69% and 45%, respectively) with a significant difference between them at two weeks (p=0.04). Nerve fiber density increased for the irradiated nerves and decreased for the control nerves, with significant differences between them (p=0.001). Low intensity therapeutic ultrasound accelerates nerve regeneration, as demonstrated with significance on the 21st postoperative day

Anatomia di una scatola nera. Quanto e come si finanzia l'alta formazione in Italia

The article provides a high-resolution picture of the allocation model that funds Italian academic institutions. It describes its technical aspects and analyzes in detail the 'standard cost', on which the 'basic quota' - the larger share of the budget - of funding is determined (or better, will be determined). This article sheds lights on some critical aspects of the overall theoretical model. Particular attention is devoted to the analysis of the nature and the functioning of the so-called 'perequative model' (aimed to balance major funding fluctuations), on which we express doubts. Moreover, through a detailed analysis of the 2016 and 2017 funds allocation, we illustrate its substantial distributive political failure. Our opinion is that the failure of the model is due also to its original unsustainability: its introduction in 2014 took place in a context of high underfunding of the system, that has till now remained unchanged

Recycling of Waste Corundum Abrasive Powder in Mk-Based Geopolymers

Recycling corundum abrasive powder in metakaolin-based geopolymer formulations is proposed to reduce the amount of waste to be treated or disposed of in landfills, allowing to decrease ecological damage as well as to reduce transport costs for removal. The addition of waste corundum, as an important source of Al(2)O(3), has proved to increase the slight ionic conductivity of the leachate solution obtained after immersion in water of samples at 28 d of curing at room temperature. With the same curing conditions, the geopolymerization process has not been disturbed as evidenced by the FT-IR peak shift and XRD patterns. It was recorded a decrease in resistance to compression of the consolidated geopolymers of about 5% with 10 wt% addition and of about 77% with the addition of 20 wt% of waste corundum. In any case, the waste abrasive powder does not release heavy metals when added to a geopolymeric formulation based on MK, NaOH, and Na-silicate, and does not show relevant antibacterial properties, indicating the formation of a stable and safe final product with a ceramic-like appearance
