Knowledge spillovers in neoclassical growth model: an extension with public sector

We propose a framework to analyze convergence between regions, incorporating the public sector and technological knowledge spillovers in the context of a Neoclassical Growth Model. Secondly, we apply novel estimation methods pertaining to the spatial econometrics literature introducing a spatial autoregressive panel data model based on instrumental variables estimation. Additionally, we introduce marginal effects associated with changing explanatory variables. Our model makes it possible to analyze, in terms of convergence, the results obtained in Spanish regions with the policies implemented during the period 1980–2007. The results support the idea that investments in physical, private and public capital, as well as in education have a positive effect on regional development and cohesion. Therefore, we can conclude that it is possible to obtain better results for regional convergence with higher rates of public investment. We also obtain interesting results that confirm the existence of spillover effects in economic growth and public policies, identifying their magnitude and significanc

The multiregional core-periphery model: the role of the spatial topology

We use the multiregional core-periphery model of the new economic geography to analyze and compare the agglomeration and dispersion forces shaping the location of economic activity for a continuum of network topologies characterized by their degree of centrality, and comprised between two extremes represented by the homogenous (ring) and the heterogeneous (star) configurations. Resorting to graph theory, we systematically extend the analytical tools and graphical representations of the coreperiphery model for alternative spatial configurations, and study the stability of the alternative equilibria in terms of the sustain and break points. We study new phenomena such as the absence of any stable distribution of economic activity for some range of transport costs, and the infeasibility of the dispersed equilibrium in the heterogeneous space, resulting in the introduction of the concept pseudo flat-earth as a long run-equilibrium corresponding to an uneven distribution of economic activity between region

The psycho oncologist knows that his technical decisions have an ethical component, though only it is because "to know" generates "power"; of there the necessary mediation of the "duty". To be a professional of excellence the psycho oncologist has to handle thoroughly the clinical aspects, the therapeutic communication and the moral analysis, having to be this one sufficiently well based on rational criteria and with analytical and deliberative solidly founded methodology. There are not facts without values and in psychooncology some facts turn into challenge from the ethical perspective: the decision taking process, the team work, the role of autonomy of the patient, the dialectics between reason and feeling, the experience of fragility and the obligations of responsibility, the link between the therapeutic communication and the moral deliberation and – above all - the moral imperative of response that supposes the experience of suffering of the patient of cancer and his family. The moral category of a society measures up for its capacity in offering alternatives to their more fragile and helplessness members; in this respect, the presence of psychooncologists in the Services of Oncology and / or Palliative Care turns, in west, in a question of justice, that not of beneficence; this is based not only for the effectiveness of his offers, but also for his efficiency

A Panel Data Toolbox for MATLAB

Panel Data Toolbox is a new package for MATLAB that includes functions to estimate the main econometric methods of panel data analysis. The package includes code for the standard fixed, between and random effects estimation methods, as well as for the existing instrumental panel and new spatial panel. This paper describes the methodology and implementation of the functions and illustrates their use with well-known examples. We perform numerical checks against other popular commercial and free software in order to show the validity of the result

Determination of material properties for progressive damage analysis in carbon epoxy laminates using Abaqus

    Get PDF
Well-designed laminated composites do not fail suddenly but rather develop microscopic progressive damage that leads to changes in macroscopic material response, such as matrix cracks, stiffness reduction, and failure. Simulation techniques are able to predict damage initiation and evolution as a function of service conditions. A method for obtaining material properties for damage analysis of Glass and Carbon fiber composites is proposed using a progressive damage analysis (PDA) model implemented in Abaqus.;The predictive capability of Progressive Damage Analysis (PDA) methods relies on material properties that characterize the ability of the composite to resist damage initiation and to delay damage progression. Although elastic moduli data and standard experimental methods exist, data and methods do not exist for damage-related properties. However, experimental data displaying macroscopic effects of damage (e.g., crack density and stiffness reduction) exists for a number of material systems. These experimental methods are sufficiently standardized to be used for other material systems.;The purpose of this study is to develop a method to obtain the missing material properties by adjusting their values so that the predicted material response matches experimental data. This methodology is based on minimizing the error between simulation predictions and available experimental data. Once the material properties are obtained, the simulation predictions are compared to a broad set of experimental data. Finally, sensitivity and convergence of Abaqus PDA is also studied

Western countries have traditionally managed and imposed their model, values and interests to the rest of the international community (they are used to calling and representing themselves as the international community as a whole). They usually are the privileged of the system, well adapted and confident. The international liberal order is institutionalized in a series of organisms, most of them born in the postwar period and enlarged and fortified after the cold war. Regional alliances like NATO and universal economic intergovernmental organizations like the International Monetary Fund are victorious and embody the western establishment.

Bereavement for the death of a son / a daughter has special features for the unnatural nature of loss and the identifi er value of the bond between parents and children. This loss shakes these identities and joins the mourners in a deep pain and a total embarrassment to the break with the past and loss of future expectations. The experiences that each member of the family have had with the deceased, will have a direct infl uence on the development and overcoming of grief for both the individual and family. For this reason, the approach should be customized and responsive to the needs of different family structures that exist in a pluralistic society. It is important that health care institutions, from Cancer-Pediatric Services, aware and promoting genuine preventive work before the death of the child. Similarly, will be bidding to the death of a child (clear risk factor for complicated grief), professional help from psychologists adequately prepared
