From Digital Twins to Digital Selves and Beyond

    Get PDF
This open access book aims at deepening the understanding of the relation between cyber-physical systems (CPSs) as socio-technical systems and their digital representations with intertwined artificial intelligence (AI). The authors describe why it is crucial for digital selves to be able to develop emotional behavior and why a humanity-inspired AI is necessary so that humans and humanoids can coexist. The introductory chapter describes major milestones in computer science which form the basis for the implementation of digital twins and digital selves. The subsequent Part I then lays the foundation to develop a socio-technical understanding of the nature of digital twins as representations and trans-human development objects. Following the conceptual understanding of digital twins and how they could be engineered according to cognitive and organizational structures, Part II forms the groundwork for understanding social behavior and its modeling. It discusses various perception-based socio-emotional approaches before sketching behavior-relevant models and their simulation capabilities. In particular, it is shown how emotions can substantially influence the collective behavior of artificial actors. Part III eventually presents a symbiosis showing under which preconditions digital selves might construct and produce digital twins as integrated design elements in trans-human ecosystems. The chapters in this part are dedicated to opportunities and modes of co-creating reflective socio-trans-human systems based on digital twin models, exploring mutual control and continuous development. The final epilog is congenitally speculative in its nature by presenting thoughts on future developments of artificial life in computational substrates. The book is written for researchers and professionals in areas like cyber-physical systems, robotics, social simulation or systems engineering, interested to take a speculative look into the future of digital twins and autonomous agents. It also touches upon philosophical aspects of digital twins, digital selves and humanoids

An object between the exclusion and the protection

[EN] Walls are boundary objects built to protect land, as well as exclude and separate. This article discusses Brazil’s urban walls, specifically the wall along Avenue Mauá, which borders the port of the city of Porto Alegre, Brazil. Despite its blatant interference with the landscape, it is often barely noticed by those who live with it on a daily basis. Ambiguous in its existence, The Wall resists debates between those who defend it as necessary and others who consider it an eyesore and call for its demolition. In order to understand and reevaluate the structure, since 2015 a group of artist-researchers has been establishing different poetic strategies to share and approximate The Wall with its surroundings, generating new interrelationships between this protagonist and the city. A series of collective walks led by artists were carried out, including Visita Imprecisa (Imprecise Visit) (2015), Turista Puede (Tourists Can) (2015) and Espiada (Peeking) (2016).[ES] Los muros son objetos fronterizos construidos para proteger territorios y practicar exclusiones y separaciones. I understand that the wearing works from Hélio Oiticica and Lygia Clark approach the conscious insertion of the body into the real space, through individual or collective acts of experimentations, having the clothing-object as the proposer element along the subject and, from this in relation to the active environment, collective and transient living spaceinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Throughout his career, the sculptor Gonzaga (Brazil-1940) has created sculptures, panels and objects, whose imagination presupposes man and nature being accomplices to the spaces they occupy. The main feature of his work is the original use of color, which he creates and applies to tactile convex-concave shaped surfaces made of iron or resininfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Mesangiogenic Progenitor Cells Derived from One Novel CD64brightCD31brightCD14neg Population in Human Adult Bone Marrow

Mesenchymal Stromal Cells (MSCs) have been the object of extensive research for decades, due to their intrinsic clinical value. Nonetheless, the unambiguous identification of a unique in vivo MSC progenitor is still lacking, and the hypothesis that these multipotent cells could possibly arise from different in vivo precursors has been gaining consensus in the last years. We identified a novel multipotent cell population in human adult bone marrow that we firstly named Mesodermal Progenitor Cells (MPCs) for the ability to differentiate toward the mesenchymal lineage while still retaining angiogenic potential. Despite extensive characterization, MPCs positioning within the differentiation pathway and whether they can be ascribed as possible distinctive progenitor of the MSC lineage is still unclear. Here we describe the ex vivo isolation of one novel bone marrow sub-population (Pop#8) with the ability to generate MPCs. Multicolor flow cytometry in combination with either FACS or MACS cell sorting were applied to characterize Pop#8 as CD64brightCD31brightCD14neg. We defined Pop#8 properties in culture, including the potential of Pop#8-derived MPCs to differentiate into MSCs. Gene expression data were suggestive of Pop#8 in vivo involvement in HSC niche constitution/maintenance. Pop#8 resulted over three logs more frequent than other putative MSC progenitors, corroborating the idea that most of the controversies regarding culture expanded MSCs could be the consequence of different culture conditions which select or promote particular sub-populations of precursors
