In this study, hot smoking process was applied to thornback ray (Raja clavata), which is a non-target catch, and the product obtained was vacuum packaged and then stored at refrigerated conditions (4±1 °C) for 120 days. The nutritional, chemical, microbiological, and sensory changes in the products were examined every 15 days. After the hot smoking process applied to thornback rays, significant changes were observed in the nutritional composition of the products (P<0.05). Total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N), trimethylamine nitrogen (TMA-N), and thiobarbituric acid (TBA) values of smoked thornback rays increased during storage, and these values were determined between 23.11-98.06 mg/100 g, 2.48-7.33 mg/100 g, and 0.1-0.3 mg malondialdehyde/kg, respectively. It was determined that the total aerobic mesophilic bacteria (TAMB) count detected in the fresh sample decreased in smoked products due to the smoking process and the value was found below the detectable limit value (1.47 log CFU/g) during storage. As a result of the sensory evaluation, it was determined that the texture, odor, and flavor criteria of the smoked thornback rays were below the consumable limit value on the 120th day. According to the results, it was determined that the thornback ray vacuum packaged by hot smoking can be consumed safely for 105 days at 4±1 °C. This study shows that discarded thornback rays, which are a high protein food, can be transformed into high valueadded products by applying different processing methods such as smoking and so can be evaluated as human food

Do Exchange Rates Affect Inflation? Evidence from Emerging Market Economies

After 1980s, chronic inflation in Turkey has shaken the confidence in the domestic currency, and thus operating debit-credit transactions through dollars. The aim of this study is to analyse the impact of exchange rate pass-through into inflation in both Turkey and emerging market economies that were highly dollarized and shifted to a flexible exchange rate regime, together with inflation targeting policy in an attempt to switch to the advanced economy, and to examine whether stabilization programs under flexible exchange rate regimes and particularly inflation targeting policy may eliminate dollarization in the periods 1995-2001 and 2002-2010

    Get PDF
In this study, three different groups of sausages were produced from thornback ray (Raja clavata) without additives (control group), waste pomegranate peel extract (natural group), and ascorbic acid (synthetic group). Biochemical, physicochemical, and microbiological changes of sausages were examined under refrigerator conditions (+4 degrees C), and the shelf life was determined. The best results in terms of nutritional and physicochemical values were obtained in sausages treated with pomegranate peel extract. All sausage groups were spoiled on the 15th day in terms of the total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N); however, the pomegranate peel extract group showed a more positive effect compared to the other sausage groups. However, this value was not considered because cartilaginous fish such as stingrays contain higher levels of nonprotein nitrogenous compounds. It was observed that microbial growth was less in the natural group and the antimicrobial effect of pomegranate peel extract was higher than that of ascorbic acid. In addition, it was determined that the pomegranate peel extract group extended the shelf life up to 6 days in terms of total viable count (TVC) and yeast/mold compared to the control and synthetic groups, respectively. This study showed that pomegranate peel extract has a better protective effect than ascorbic acid and it can be used as a natural additive in preserving the quality of seafood products

Applying model mediation method to a mobile robot bilateral teleoperation system experiencing time delays in communication

    Get PDF
Teleoperation systems consist of two subsystems namely, the master and the slave. Master is used by the human operator to send commands to the slave to achieve a task. In bilateral teleoperation, the interaction forces acquired from the slave sub-system is sent to the master to increase the level of tele-presence. In this kind of a setting, data has to be transferred through a communication line in which package losses and time delays occur. Such deficiencies in the communication line results in stability problems in the system. In this paper, HIPHAD desktop haptic device as the master sub-system and an omni-directional mobile robot as the slave subsystem is used to develop an unlimited workspace teleoperation system. The system’s stability and tracking performance under a constant time delay is measured for direct teleoperation and when model mediation method is applied to ensure stability. The results of the tests are given and the conclusions are derived. The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turke

Amelogenesis imperfecta (AI) is a hereditary disorder that disrupts the formation of enamel in both primary and permanent dentition. Management of AI is a challenge for the patient and the clinician. This case report presents the management of AI in a sixyear-old female patient. Considering the patient's age, we decided to make removable dentures in order to avoid growth and development problems. Conventional complete dentures were made, vertical dimension was increased, and the desired aesthetics and function were gained. Additionally, satisfaction with prosthodontic rehabilitation was evaluated using a questionnaire. A high level of patient and parent satisfaction was obtained. Treatment planning for patients with AI is related to many factors including the age and socioeconomic status of the patient, the type and severity of the disorder, the intraoral situation at the time the treatment is planned and most importantly, cooperation of the patient plays a major role

    Get PDF
Background: The purpose of the study was to examine the subcutaneous connective tissue reaction to three self-adhesive resin cements. Methods: Sixty-three polyethylene tubes were filled with three different self-adhesive resin cements (Group Z [Zirconite], Group P [Panavia SA], and Group H [High Q Bond]). Twenty-one polyethylene tubes remained empty and were used as controls (Group C). All tubes were implanted into the subcutaneous tissue of the 21 rats. Specimens from each cement type were obtained at 7, 30, and 90 days. Quantitative assessments of inflammatory cells were performed in 5 different areas of each specimen. Results: All animals survive during the follow-up periods except two rats. The mean values of inflammatory cells at 90 days were 14 (±1.8), 15.1 (±3.5), 96 (±12.1), 16 (±2.1) in Groups C, H, P, and Z, respectively. The thicknesses of the fibrous capsule decreased significantly with time in all groups except Group P. Conclusion: Biocompatibility of self-adhesive resin cements was material-dependent. High Q Bond and Zirconite exhibited satisfactory biocompatibility; however, Panavia demonstrated a moderate inflammatory response at 90 days

    Get PDF
Objective: Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is the most common type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma among adults and is characterized by heterogeneous clinical, immunophenotypic, and genetic features. Different mechanisms deregulating cell cycle and apoptosis play a role in the pathogenesis of DLBCL. Growth arrest DNA damage-inducible 45 (GADD45γ) is an important gene family involved in these mechanisms. The aims of this study are to determine the frequency of GADD45γ methylation, to evaluate the correlation between GADD45γ methylation and protein expression, and to investigate the relation between methylation status and clinicopathologic parameters in DLBCL tissues and reactive lymphoid node tissues from patients with reactive lymphoid hyperplasia. Materials and Methods: Thirty-six tissue samples of DLBCL and 40 nonmalignant reactive lymphoid node tissues were analyzed in this study. Methylation-sensitive high-resolution melting analysis was used for the determination of GADD45γ methylation status. The GADD45γ protein expression was determined by immunohistochemistry. Results: GADD45γ methylation was frequent (50.0%) in DLBCL. It was also significantly higher in advanced-stage tumors compared with early-stage (p=0.041). In contrast, unmethylated GADD45γ was associated with nodal involvement as the primary anatomical site (p=0.040). Conclusion: The results of this study show that, in contrast to solid tumors, the frequency of GADD45γ methylation is higher and this epigenetic alteration of GADD45γ may be associated with progression in DLBCL. In addition, nodal involvement is more likely to be present in patients with unmethylated GADD45γ. © 2015 Turkish Society of Hematology. All rights reserved
