The Cloister of Santa Clara-a-nova monastery, analysis of architectural typology used at the time of the portuguese restauration
This article intends to focus on the first phase of construction of the cloister of Mosteiro de Santa
Clara-a-Nova in Coimbra (Portugal), characterized by the architectural and military tratadistics of
the Restoration period. From the documentary research and the projectual representation, it is
proposed to contextualize its original typology.
The cloister of Mosteiro de Santa Clara-a-Nova, although it is a major work of the Restoration and
the Cycle of Aqueduto das Águas Livres of Lisboa, is poorly studied. At a time when the work of
the kingdom was conditioned by the expenses of the war, those of greater relevance were of
military character and erected in the geographical areas of territorial defence. It is perhaps necessary
to prove the legitimacy of Portuguese independence, which led to the reinforcement of the use of
mental processes and scholastic theses, which will cultivate the propagandist of Culto Isabelino in
Casa de Bragança. [1] The progressive silting of the old convent, together with the political need,
meant that in 1649 D. João IV ordered that the first stone be laid for the construction of the new
Monastery of Santa Clara de Coimbra, in which he determines that in Latin it refers to the Queen
Santa Isabel as his Grandmother and Lady.
The documents related to the construction of Mosteiro de Santa Clara-a-Nova show that the original
plants and infrastructures are responsibility of Friar Turriano. [2] Regardless the regime of
observance, following the long tradition of inheriting public offices, Friar Torriano receives from D.
João IV the position of Chief Engineer (Engenheiro-mor) of the Kingdom. For thirteen years he
traces several religious houses and even succeedes Mateus do Couto (uncle) in the work of Forte de
São Lourenço da Cabeça Seca, in Barra do Tejo. [3] The architectural knowledge of Friar Turriano
can be verified in the study of his library’s catalog, which he inherits of his father Leonardo
Turriano (Engineer-mor of Portugal), and where stand out several architectural treatises, such as
those of Sebastiano Serlio, which he studied and wrote down in detail. In fact there is a correlation
between these and the solution adopted in the first compositional scheme of the cloister. [4]
The first reference to the cloister (1700) appears in the register of the letters of
Superintendent Marquês do Alegrete, where he describes how he conferred with Manuel do Couto,
the copies of Friar Turriano’s plans, and decided to start the work of the cistern. Manuel do Couto
succeeded his protector, Mateus do Couto (Nephew), with whom he learned the office of architect
under the patronage of the Marquis.
In fact this military architectural culture, whose origin leads to Mateus do Couto (Uncle), will fit the
project outlined by Frei Torriano, whose appearance despite Serliana, is structurally military.
In 1731 Custodio Vieira measures the works that had been executed in all the gallery of the first
floor of the cloister. The measurement suggests that at least two galleries were already erected;
despite the advance, in 1737 is demanded the demolition of the dome, as it was threatening ruin on
the side of the olive grove. On its direction the structural reform begins, definitively altering the
original typology. Custódio Viera and his successor, Carlos Mardel, besides changing the structure,
introduce a Baroque model based on the politics of happiness of the peoples, linked to the currents
of the Enlightenment.CONCLUSIONS
The cloister we can visit nowadays, in Mosteiro de Santa Clara-a-Nova is a hybrid, whose skeleton
is inspired by the reading of Serlio's works. This work by Frei Turriano still presents features of
military architecture, which are translated not only in the decorative bareness of the façade but also
in the large dimensions of the galleries of its arches and domes. It could have been the proportions
of these structural elements that gave rise to the fall of the domes, changing forever its original
typology.
Regardless of whether any of the plants mentioned in this article have never been found, it is
possible through the documentation studied to present a 3d model of the typology that Torriano
would have planned
Introduction: In the context of the Semantic Web, interoperability among
heterogeneous ontologies is a challenge due to several factors, among which semantic ambiguity and redundancy stand out. To overcome these challenges, systems and algorithms are adopted to align different ontologies. In this study, it is understood that controlled vocabularies are a particular form of ontology.
Objective: to obtain a vocabulary resulting from the alignment and fusion of the Vocabularies Scientific Domains and Scientific Areas of the Foundation for Science and Technology, - FCT, European Science Vocabulary - EuroSciVoc and United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization - UNESCO nomenclature for fields of Science and Technology, in the Computing Sciences domain, to be used
in the IViSSEM project. Methodology: literature review on systems/algorithms for
ontology alignment, using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews
and Meta-Analyses - PRISMA methodology; alignment of the three vocabularies;
and validation of the resulting vocabulary by means of a Delphi study. Results: we
proceeded to analyze the 25 ontology alignment systems and variants that
participated in at least one track of the Ontology Alignment Evaluation Initiative
competition between 2018 and 2019. From these systems, Agreement Maker Light
and Log Map were selected to perform the alignment of the three vocabularies,
making a cut to the area of Computer Science. Conclusion: The vocabulary was
obtained from Agreement Maker Light for having presented a better performance.
At the end, a vocabulary with 98 terms was obtained in the Computer Science
domain to be adopted by the IViSSEM project. The alignment resulted from the
vocabularies used by FCT (Portugal), with the one adopted by the European Union
(EuroSciVoc) and another one from the domain of Science & Technology
(UNESCO). This result is beneficial to other universities and projects, as well as to
FCT itself. Designing lesson studies to support teachers’ professional development
In this paper we address design issues of lesson studies that aim to support practicing teachers’ professional development. We discuss these issues based in the cases of two lesson studies that we conducted in the academic year of 2013-2014 in a cluster of schools in Lisbon. We strive to show that, besides the consideration of the mathematical content, task features, and focus on student reasoning, attention needs to be paid to organizational issues regarding the way the teachers are invited to become involved in lesson studies and to the collaborative environment provided. We also conclude critical design factors for the success of a lesson study include the investigation style of the whole activity, the combination of teachers’ experiential knowledge with research knowledge, and the exploratory and collaborative environment that frames the activities that the teachers undertake.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Development, psychopathology and attachment: an exploratory study with institutionalized children and their caregivers
This exploratory study examined mental development and the quality of socio-emotional functioning of 16 institutionalized children, aged from 3 to 6 years old, relating them with the quality of their caregivers’ attachment narratives. Griffiths Developmental Scales, Child Behavior Checklist, Attachment Script Representation and Attachment Q-Sort were used in the psychological assessment. Results showed that chidren’s developmental level was placed below normative data. Furthermore, data regarding externalizing
and internalizing psychopathology symptoms were close to the clinical population. Nevertheless, and in contrast to our hypothesis, most children presented almost mormative attachments scores (secure
base), but this was not related to the quality of attachement narratives presented by their caregivers. The implications of these findings are discussed in light of the impact of institutional deprivation in child development.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT). PTDC/PSI-PCL/101506/200
Análise do Desempenho de Regras de Análise Técnica Aplicada ao Mercado Intradiário do Contrato Futuro do Índice Bovespa
The purpose of this article is to investigate whether, how and when, from a statistical standpoint, Technical Analysis strategies tools hold true for the futures contract of Ibovespa
Index, negotiated at the Brazilian Futures Exchange (“Bolsa Brasileira de Mercadorias e
Futuros – BM&F”), using tick-by-tick data. The methodology applied was suggested by
Baptista (2002), in a way that the rules are grouped according to similar performance and
are validated in subsequent intervals of time. As a result, in all periods and independently
of sampling frequency, the strategies over-perform the buy-and-hold startegy, but realistic
considerations about transaction costs and timing can reduce the gain
Effect of photostimulation through red LED light radiation on natural fermentation of table olives: An innovative case study with Negrinha the Freixo variety
In this study, for the first time, red LED light radiation was applied to the fermentation process of table olives using the Negrinha de Freixo variety. Photostimulation using LED light emission (630 ± 10 nm) is proposed to shorten and speed up this stage and reduce time to market. Several physical-chemical characteristics and microorganisms (total microbial count of mesophilic aerobic, molds, yeasts, and lactic acid bacteria) and their sequence during fermentation were monitored. The fermentation occurred for 122 days, with two irradiation periods for red LED light. The nutritional composition and sensory analysis were performed at the end of the process. Fermentation under red LED light increased the viable yeast and lactic acid bacteria (LAB) cell counts and decreased the total phenolics in olives. Even though significant differences were observed in some color parameters, the hue values were of the same order of magnitude and similar for both samples. Furthermore, the red LED light did not play a relevant change in the texture profile, preventing the softening of the fruit pulp. Similarly, LED light did not modify the existing type of microflora but increased species abundance, resulting in desirable properties and activities. The species identified were yeasts - Candida boidinii, Pichia membranifaciens, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and bacteria - Lactobacillus plantarum and Leuconostoc mesenteroides, being the fermentative process dominated by S. cerevisiae and L. plantarum. At the end of fermentation (122 days), the irradiated olives showed less bitterness and acidity, higher hardness, and lower negative sensory attributes than non-irradiated. Thus, the results of this study indicate that red LED light application can be an innovative technology for table olives production. The authors are grateful to the Foundation for Science and Technology
