The Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey: Precision measurements of the absolute cosmic distance scale

BOSS, the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey, is a 5-year program to measure the absolute cosmic distance scale and expansion rate with percent-level precision at redshifts z<0.7 and z~2.5. BOSS uses the "standard ruler" provided by baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO). BOSS will achieve a near optimal measurement of the BAO scale at z<0.7, with a redshift survey of 1.5 million luminous galaxies. It will pioneer a new method of BAO measurement at high redshift, using the LyA forest to 160,000 QSOs in the redshift range 2.1<z<3.0. The forecast measurement precision for angular diameter distance d_A is 1.0%, 1.0%, and 1.5% at z=0.35, 0.6, and 2.5, respectively, and the forecast precision for the Hubble parameter H(z) is 1.8%, 1.7%, and 1.2% at the same redshifts. These measurements will provide powerful constraints on the nature of dark energy and the curvature of space, complementing the constraints obtained from other probes. BOSS will also provide a superb data set for studying large- and small-scale clustering, the evolution of massive galaxies and the luminosity function and clustering of QSOs at 2.3 < z < 6.5. BOSS is one of four surveys that comprise SDSS-III (the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III), a 6-year program that will use highly multiplexed spectrographs on the 2.5-m Sloan Foundation Telescope to investigate cosmological parameters, the history and structure of the Milky Way galaxy, and the population of giant planet systems.Comment: Unpublished SDSS-III white paper for the US Decadal Survey. Deduction of the quantum unmbers of low-lying states of the (e+e+e-e-) system from symmetry consideration

The feature of the low-lying spectrum and a complete set of quantum numbers of the (e+e+e-e-) system have been deduced based on symmetry consideration. The existence of a low odd-parity L=1 excited state with the spins of the two electrons coupled to s1=1 and the two positrons coupled to s2=0 (or s1=0 and s2=1) and a low even-parity L=0 excited state with s1=s2=1 have been predicted. The discussion is generalized to 2-dimensional (e+e+e-e-) systems.Comment: 12 pages, 5 tables, no figure

    ARXPS-studies ofcˆ-axis textured YBa2Cu3Ox-films

YBa2Cu3Ox sputter deposited cold on MgO grows in O2 annealing epitaxially to a transparent, superconducting film with Tc 80K. The unscraped surfaces of these films are smooth showing XPS lines changing with photoelectron take-off angle. This enhanced data base allows to separate the different chemical compounds (hydroxide, peroxide, carbonate, carboxyle, cuprate, graphite ...) and to obtain their spatial distribution. This yields the compounds, their amount and distribution making up the cinder growing with O2-anneal at internal and external surfaces. The cinder stoichiometry gives insights in the chemistry going on in O2 annealing. Below the cinder the signature ofcˆ-axis oriented YBa2Cu3Ox is identified, showing that a Ba-oxide layer forms the stable surface. This coats insulating CuO2 and Y-oxide layers yielding so an intrinsic dead layer

ISW effect as probe of features in the expansion history of the Universe

In this paper, using and implementing a new line of sight CMB code, called CMBAns [1], that allows us to modify H(z) for any given feature at any redshift we study the effect of changes in the expansion history of the Universe on the CMB power spectrum. Motivated by the detailed analytical calculations of the effects of the changes in H(z) on ISW plateau and CMB low multipoles, we study two phenomenological parametric form of the expansion history using WMAP data and through MCMC analysis. Our MCMC analysis shows that the standard LCDM cosmological model is consistent with the CMB data allowing the expansion history of the Universe vary around this model at different redshifts. However, our analysis also shows that a decaying dark energy model proposed in [2] has in fact a marginally better fit than the standard cosmological constant model to CMB data. Concordance of our studies here with the previous analysis showing that Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) and supernovae data (SN Ia) also prefer mildly this decaying dark energy model to LCDM, makes this finding interesting and worth further investigation.Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures, 2 tables, discussions extended, references added, results unchanged, matches final version published in JCA

Enhanced sulfur tolerance of ceria-promoted NO x storage reduction (NSR) catalysts: Sulfur uptake, thermal regeneration and reduction with H2(g)

    Get PDF
SO x uptake, thermal regeneration and the reduction of SO x via H2(g) over ceria-promoted NSR catalysts were investigated. Sulfur poisoning and desulfation pathways of the complex BaO/Pt/CeO2/Al2O3 NSR system was investigated using a systematic approach where the functional sub-components such as Al 2O3, CeO2/Al2O3, BaO/Al2O3, BaO/CeO2/Al2O 3, and BaO/Pt/Al2O3 were studied in a comparative fashion. Incorporation of ceria significantly increases the S-uptake of Al2O3 and BaO/Al2O3 under both moderate and extreme S-poisoning conditions. Under moderate S-poisoning conditions, Pt sites seem to be the critical species for SO x oxidation and SO x storage, where BaO/Pt/Al2O3 and BaO/Pt/CeO2/Al2O3 catalysts reveal a comparable extent of sulfation. After extreme S-poisoning due to the deactivation of most of the Pt sites, ceria domains are the main SO x storage sites on the BaO/Pt/CeO2/Al2O3 surface. Thus, under these conditions, BaO/Pt/CeO2/Al 2O3 surface stores more sulfur than that of BaO/Pt/Al 2O3. BaO/Pt/CeO2/Al2O3 reveals a significantly improved thermal regeneration behavior in vacuum with respect to the conventional BaO/Pt/Al2O3 catalyst. Ceria promotion remarkably enhances the SO x reduction with H 2(g). © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media New York
