Asymptotic behavior of support points for planar curves

    Get PDF
In this paper we prove a universal inequality describing the asymptotic behavior of support points for planar continuous curves. As corollaries we get an analogous result for tangent points of differentiable planar curves and some (partially known) assertions on the asymptotic of the mean value points for various classical analytic theorems. Some open questions are formulated.Comment: 17 pages, some typos corrected, some references adde

Serum Levels of Adipocyte Fatty Acid-Binding Protein Are Associated with the Severity of Coronary Artery Disease in Chinese Women

BACKGROUND: Adipocyte fatty acid-binding protein (A-FABP) has been described as a novel adipokine, playing an important role in the development of metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes and atherosclerosis. In this study, we investigated the relationship between serum levels of A-FABP and the presence and severity of coronary artery disease (CAD) in Chinese subjects. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Circulating A-FABP level was determined by ELISA in 341 Chinese subjects (221 men, 120 women) who underwent coronary angiography. A-FABP levels in patients with CAD were significantly higher compared with non-CAD subjects (P = 0.029 in men; P = 0.031 in women). Serum A-FABP increased significantly in multi-vessel diseased patients than in non-CAD subjects (P = 0.011 in men, P = 0.004 in women), and showed an independent correlation with coronary atherosclerosis index (standardized β = 0.173, P = 0.025). In multiple logistic regression analysis, serum A-FABP was an independent risk factor for CAD in women (OR = 5.637, 95%CI: 1.299-24.457, P = 0.021). In addition, amino terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) was demonstrated to be positively and independently correlated with A-FABP (standardized β = 0.135, P = 0.027). CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Serum A-FABP is closely associated with the presence and severity of CAD in Chinese women

The Overseeing Mother: Revisiting the Frontal-Pose Lady in the Wu Family Shrines in Second Century China

Located in present-day Jiaxiang in Shandong province, the Wu family shrines built during the second century in the Eastern Han dynasty (25–220) were among the best-known works in Chinese art history. Although for centuries scholars have exhaustively studied the pictorial programs, the frontal-pose female image situated on the second floor of the central pavilion carved at the rear wall of the shrines has remained a question. Beginning with the woman’s eyes, this article demonstrates that the image is more than a generic portrait (“hard motif ”), but rather represents “feminine overseeing from above” (“soft motif ”). This synthetic motif combines three different earlier motifs – the frontal-pose hostess enjoying entertainment, the elevated spectator, and the Queen Mother of the West. By creatively fusing the three motifs into one unity, the Jiaxiang artists lent to the frontal-pose lady a unique power: she not only dominated the center of the composition, but also, like a divine being, commanded a unified view of the surroundings on the lofty building, hence echoing the political reality of the empress mother’s “overseeing the court” in the second century during Eastern Han dynasty

Study on the pathogenesis of autoimmune-type recurrent spontaneous abortion by establishing a new mouse model

AbstractObjectiveTo establish a new mouse model for autoimmune-type recurrent spontaneous abortion (AI-RSA) and demonstrate the potential role of intrauterine immunization with β2GP-1-like antigen in AI-RSA, we performed an intrauterine injection of human β2GP-1 in BALB/c mice and unrelated protein, adjuvants, and normal saline (NS) as controls. The mean number of embryos implanted (MNEI), embryo loss rate (ELR), mean embryo bulk (MEB), and mean placental weight (MPW) were analyzed. Compared with the control mice, BALB/c mice injected with human β2GP-1 showed increased anti-β2GP-1 and MPW. Moreover, BALB/c mice immunized with human β2GP-1 exhibited hypercoagulability and vascular thrombus formation in the placenta. Electron microscopy confirmed the existence of platelet aggregation, mitochondrial swelling, and endothelial cell necrosis in the placentas of BALB/c mice immunized with human β2GP-1. These finding indicated that intrauterine immunization with β2GP-1 successfully induced AI-RSA in mice. Increased anti-β2GP-1 antibody could independently induce hypercoagulability, vascular endothelial injury, and vascular thrombus formation in the placenta, which led to AI-RSA

Adoptive transfer of mFas ligand into dendritic cells influences the spontaneous resorption rate in the CBA/J Ă— DBA/2 mouse model

To investigate the effect of mFasL dendritic cells (DC) on the embryo resorption rate in the CBA/J Ă— DBA/2 abortion mouse model. Experimental study. University hospital in a major city in China. 101 CBA/J mice and 50 DBA/2 mice. We constructed the eukaryotic expression vector pcDNA3.1-mFasL, derived the DCs from bone marrow of DBA/2 mice, and transfected the DCs with pcDNA3.1-mFasL. The abortion mouse model were established by mating female CBA/J mice with DBA/2 mice. Via the CBA/J Ă— DBA/2 abortion mouse model, five groups were established: group 1: abortion model without treatment; group 2: abortion mouse model injected with DC culture medium (DCCM); group 3: abortion mouse model injected with DC; group 4: abortion mouse model injected with empty plasmid pcDNA3.1-DC; group 5: abortion model mouse injected with pcDNA3.1-FasL-DC. Comparison of difference in the embryo resorption rates of the CBA/J Ă— DBA/2 abortion mouse model treated with either pcDNA3.1-mFasL-DC or different controls observed on gestation days 12 to 14. The embryo resorption rate was statistically significantly decreased in group 3 treated with DC and group 4 with empty plasmid pcDNA3.1-DC when they compared with group 1 (no treatment for abortion mouse model) and group 2 (injected with DC culture medium, DCCM). Furthermore, abortion model group 5 (injected with pcDNA3.1-mFasL-DC) showed a statistically significantly decreased in embryo resorption rate when compared with the other four groups, including groups 1 and 2 and groups 3 and group 4. Adoptive transfer of mFasL-DC can statistically significantly reduce the embryo resorption rate in the CBA/J Ă— DBA/2 abortion mouse model

A Comparative Study of Antitumor Activities and DNA Cleavage On A Class of Dehydroabietylamine Derivatives

A series of novel dehydroabietylamine derivatives containing tricyclic diterpene structures were synthesized. The antitumor activities of these compounds against L02, Hey-1B and HepG2 cells were investigated. Significant activity was discovered for fourteen analogs. Meanwhile these compounds exhibit DNA cleavage activities on plasmid DNA (Escherichia coli), which depend on the Schiff base structure and the substituent of the aromatic moiety. Our findings present further information on the relationship between the chemical structure, biological function and DNA cleavage characteristics
