Quantum dense coding over Bloch channels

Dynamics of coded information over Bloch channels is investigated for different values of the channel's parameters. We show that, the suppressing of the travelling coded information over Bloch channel can be increased by decreasing the equilibrium absolute value of information carrier and consequently decreasing the distilled information by eavesdropper. The amount of decoded information can be improved by increasing the equilibrium values of the two qubits and decreasing the ratio between longitudinal and transverse relaxation times. The robustness of coded information in maximum and partial entangled states is discussed. It is shown that the maximum entangled states are more robust than the partial entangled state over this type of channels

SPORT: A new sub-nanosecond time-resolved instrument to study swift heavy ion-beam induced luminescence - Application to luminescence degradation of a fast plastic scintillator

    Get PDF
We developed a new sub-nanosecond time-resolved instrument to study the dynamics of UV-visible luminescence under high stopping power heavy ion irradiation. We applied our instrument, called SPORT, on a fast plastic scintillator (BC-400) irradiated with 27-MeV Ar ions having high mean electronic stopping power of 2.6 MeV/\mu m. As a consequence of increasing permanent radiation damages with increasing ion fluence, our investigations reveal a degradation of scintillation intensity together with, thanks to the time-resolved measurement, a decrease in the decay constant of the scintillator. This combination indicates that luminescence degradation processes by both dynamic and static quenching, the latter mechanism being predominant. Under such high density excitation, the scintillation deterioration of BC-400 is significantly enhanced compared to that observed in previous investigations, mainly performed using light ions. The observed non-linear behaviour implies that the dose at which luminescence starts deteriorating is not independent on particles' stopping power, thus illustrating that the radiation hardness of plastic scintillators can be strongly weakened under high excitation density in heavy ion environments.Comment: 5 figures, accepted in Nucl. Conceptualizing throughput legitimacy: procedural mechanisms of accountability, transparency, inclusiveness and openness in EU governance

    Get PDF
This symposium demonstrates the potential for throughput legitimacy as a concept for shedding empirical light on the strengths and weaknesses of multi-level governance, as well as challenging the concept theoretically. This article introduces the symposium by conceptualizing throughput legitimacy as an ‘umbrella concept’, encompassing a constellation of normative criteria not necessarily empirically interrelated. It argues that in order to interrogate multi-level governance processes in all their complexity, it makes sense for us to develop normative standards that are not naïve about the empirical realities of how power is exercised within multilevel governance, or how it may interact with legitimacy. We argue that while throughput legitimacy has its normative limits, it can be substantively useful for these purposes. While being no replacement for input and output legitimacy, throughput legitimacy offers distinctive normative criteria— accountability, transparency, inclusiveness and openness— and points towards substantive institutional reforms.Published versio

This paper presents a Fuzzy Logic Development Tool called PetraFuz which has been developed at Control System Laboratory, Electrical Engineering Department, Petra Christian University. The system consists of a hardware target based on MCS51 microcontroller and a software support running under PC Windows. The system is targeted for developing fuzzy logic based systems. It supports fuzzy logic design, evaluation, assembly language generator and downloading process to the target hardware to perform on-line fuzzy process. Process action and fuzzy parameters could be transferred to PC monitor via RS-232 serial communication, this on-line process parameters is used for fuzzy tuning, i.e. fuzzy if-then rules and fuzzy membership functions. The PetraFuz tool helps very much for Fuzzy system developments, it could reduce development time significantly. The tool could spur the development of fuzzy systems based on microcontroller systems such as fuzzy control systems, fuzzy information processing, etc

Neutron radiography study of laboratory ageing and treatment applications with stone consolidants

    Get PDF
A nano-silica consolidant and nano-titania modified tetraethyl-orthosilicate were applied on two building stones, a carbonate and a silicate, by brush, poultice or capillary absorption. Neutron radiography was used to monitor capillary water absorption, and to analyse changes in physical properties caused by heat treatment of specimens for the purposes of artificially ageing and different treatment applications with stone consolidants. Moreover, ultrasonic pulse velocity and gravimetrically determined water absorption were analysed to cross-validate neutron radiography. The results reveal that reactive systems like tetraethyl-orthosilicates need an unknown period for polymerisation, which makes nano-silica consolidants more favourable for construction follow-up work. While polymerisation is incomplete, hydrophobic behaviour, water trapping and pore clogging are evident. Within the tetraethyl-orthosilicate treatment, poultice and brushing are strongly influenced by the applicant, which results in wide ranging amounts of water absorbed and anomalous water distributions and kinetics. The carbonate lithotype displays polymerisation initiated in the core of the specimen, while the lateral surfaces are still mostly hydrophobic. Reaction time differences can be attributed to the different amounts of consolidants applied, which is a result of the chosen application settings. Artificial ageing of stone specimens is a prerequisite when mechanical strength gain is studied, as demonstrated by sound speed propagation

Schroedinger cat-like states by conditional measurements on a beam-splitter

A scheme for generating Schr\"{o}dinger cat-like states of a single-mode optical field by means of conditional measurement is proposed. Feeding into a beam splitter a squeezed vacuum and counting the photons in one of the output channels, the conditional states in the other output channel exhibit a number of properties that are very similar to those of superpositions of two coherent states with opposite phases. We present analytical and numerical results for the photon-number and quadrature-component distributions of the conditional states and their Wigner and Husimi functions. Further, we discuss the effect of realistic photocounting on the states.Comment: 6 figures(divided in subfigures) using a4.st

Inverted spectroscopy and interferometry for quantum-state reconstruction of systems with SU(2) symmetry

We consider how the conventional spectroscopic and interferometric schemes can be rearranged to serve for reconstructing quantum states of physical systems possessing SU(2) symmetry. The discussed systems include a collection of two-level atoms, a two-mode quantized radiation field with a fixed total number of photons, and a single laser-cooled ion in a two-dimensional harmonic trap with a fixed total number of vibrational quanta. In the proposed rearrangement, the standard spectroscopic and interferometric experiments are inverted. Usually one measures an unknown frequency or phase shift using a system prepared in a known quantum state. Our aim is just the inverse one, i.e., to use a well-calibrated apparatus with known transformation parameters to measure unknown quantum states.Comment: 8 pages, REVTeX. Accessible information and optimal strategies for real symmetrical quantum sources

    Get PDF
We study the problem of optimizing the Shannon mutual information for sources of real quantum states i.e. sources for which there is a basis in which all the states have only real components. We consider in detail the sources EM{\cal E}_M of MM equiprobable qubit states lying symmetrically around the great circle of real states on the Bloch sphere and give a variety of explicit optimal strategies. We also consider general real group-covariant sources for which the group acts irreducibly on the subset of all real states and prove the existence of a real group-covariant optimal strategy, extending a theorem of Davies (E. B. Davies, IEEE. Inf. Theory {\bf IT-24}, 596 (1978)). Finally we propose an optical scheme to implement our optimal strategies, enough simple to be realized with present technology.Comment: RevTeX, 16 pages, 4 eps figures with psfig, submitted to Phys.
