Differential impact of two risk communications on antipsychotic prescribing to people with dementia in Scotland: segmented regression time series analysis 2001-2011

Program on Earth Observation Data Management Systems (EODMS)
An assessment was made of the needs of a group of potential users of satellite remotely sensed data (state, regional, and local agencies) involved in natural resources management in five states, and alternative data management systems to satisfy these needs are outlined. Tasks described include: (1) a comprehensive data needs analysis of state and local users; (2) the design of remote sensing-derivable information products that serve priority state and local data needs; (3) a cost and performance analysis of alternative processing centers for producing these products; (4) an assessment of the impacts of policy, regulation and government structure on implementing large-scale use of remote sensing technology in this community of users; and (5) the elaboration of alternative institutional arrangements for operational Earth Observation Data Management Systems (EODMS). It is concluded that an operational EODMS will be of most use to state, regional, and local agencies if it provides a full range of information services -- from raw data acquisition to interpretation and dissemination of final information products
Periodically Varying Externally Imposed Environmental Effects on Population Dynamics
Effects of externally imposed periodic changes in the environment on
population dynamics are studied with the help of a simple model. The
environmental changes are represented by the temporal and spatial dependence of
the competition terms in a standard equation of evolution. Possible
applications of the analysis are on the one hand to bacteria in Petri dishes
and on the other to rodents in the context of the spread of the Hantavirus
epidemic. The analysis shows that spatio-temporal structures emerge, with
interesting features which depend on the interplay of separately controllable

Low Dopamine D2/D3 Receptor Availability is Associated with Steep Discounting of Delayed Rewards in Methamphetamine Dependence.
BackgroundIndividuals with substance use disorders typically exhibit a predilection toward instant gratification with apparent disregard for the future consequences of their actions. Indirect evidence suggests that low dopamine D2-type receptor availability in the striatum contributes to the propensity of these individuals to sacrifice long-term goals for short-term gain; however, this possibility has not been tested directly. We investigated whether striatal D2/D3 receptor availability is negatively correlated with the preference for smaller, more immediate rewards over larger, delayed alternatives among research participants who met DSM-IV criteria for methamphetamine (MA) dependence.MethodsFifty-four adults (n = 27 each: MA-dependent, non-user controls) completed the Kirby Monetary Choice Questionnaire, and underwent positron emission tomography scanning with [(18)F]fallypride.ResultsMA users displayed steeper temporal discounting (p = 0.030) and lower striatal D2/D3 receptor availability (p < 0.0005) than controls. Discount rate was negatively correlated with striatal D2/D3 receptor availability, with the relationship reaching statistical significance in the combined sample (r = -0.291, p = 0.016) and among MA users alone (r = -0.342, p = 0.041), but not among controls alone (r = -0.179, p = 0.185); the slopes did not differ significantly between MA users and controls (p = 0.5).ConclusionsThese results provide the first direct evidence of a link between deficient D2/D3 receptor availability and steep temporal discounting. This finding fits with reports that low striatal D2/D3 receptor availability is associated with a higher risk of relapse among stimulant users, and may help to explain why some individuals choose to continue using drugs despite knowledge of their eventual negative consequences. Characterisation of penA and tetM resistance genes of Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolated in southern Africa - epidemiological monitoring and resistance development
Objective. To investigate penA and tetM resistance gene variation of Neisseria gonorrhoeae in order to define gene types for epidemiological monitoring and resistance development. Design. Isolates of N. gonorrhoeae which were susceptible and resistant to penicillin and/or tetracycline were selected. Strains comprised South African isolates (22 from Bloemfontein, 13 from Transvaal, 20 from the Cape) and 15 Botswana and 4 Namibia isolates. The penA genes (2 kb) of all strains and tetM genes (765 bp) of 11 high-level tetracycline-resistant strains were amplified and restricted with Hpall. Results and conclusions. Twelve different Hpall fingerprint patterns were obtained from the 74 isolates analysed for penicillin-binding protein (PBP) 2 gene (penA) alterations. Focusing on the transpeptidase domain, 25 isolates (3 whole gene patterns, minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) ~ 0,03 - 0,125 ug/ml) had restriction sites equivalent to those previously described for a susceptible strain. Of the remaining 9 PBP 2 'gene groups, 25 strains fell into a designated group E. Penicillin/ penicillin + clavulanic acid MICs determined on these group E isolates gave a range of 0,125 - 2,0 ug/ml, although MICs against 4 strains were ~ 0,03 ug/ml. MICs of penicillin/penicillin + c1avulanic acid for the 24 isolates that contained altered PBP 2 transpeptidase gene regions not designated group E were only ~ 0,03 - 0,125 ug/ml. The lack of a Hpall restriction site at nucleotide 1934 in the PBP 2 gene of group E strains was indicative of a small terminal region of N. cinerea DNA. This gene block, which was found in all the southern African areas studied, appears to predispose isolates to increased penicillin resistance. The 25,2 MDa conjugative plasmid carrying the tetM resistance determinant was readily demonstrated in 11 Botswana Namibia isolates exhibiting high-level resistance to tetracycline (MICs > 16 ug/ml). Adaptive Optics Images of Kepler Objects of Interest
All transiting planets are at risk of contamination by blends with nearby,
unresolved stars. Blends dilute the transit signal, causing the planet to
appear smaller than it really is, or produce a false positive detection when
the target star is blended with eclipsing binary stars. This paper reports on
high spatial-resolution adaptive optics images of 90 Kepler planetary
candidates. Companion stars are detected as close as 0.1 arcsec from the target
star. Images were taken in the near-infrared (J and Ks bands) with ARIES on the
MMT and PHARO on the Palomar Hale 200-inch. Most objects (60%) have at least
one star within 6 arcsec separation and a magnitude difference of 9. Eighteen
objects (20%) have at least one companion within 2 arcsec of the target star; 6
companions (7%) are closer than 0.5 arcsec. Most of these companions were
previously unknown, and the associated planetary candidates should receive
additional scrutiny. Limits are placed on the presence of additional companions
for every system observed, which can be used to validate planets statistically
using the BLENDER method. Validation is particularly critical for low-mass,
potentially Earth-like worlds, which are not detectable with current-generation
radial velocity techniques. High-resolution images are thus a crucial component

Characterization of the anticipated synchronization regime in the coupled FitzHugh--Nagumo model for neurons
We characterize numerically the regime of anticipated synchronization in the
coupled FitzHugh-Nagumo model for neurons. We consider two neurons, coupled
unidirectionally (in a master-slave configuration), subject to the same random
external forcing and with a recurrent inhibitory delayed connection in the
slave neuron. We show that the scheme leads to anticipated synchronization, a
regime in which the slave neuron fires the same train of pulses as the master
neuron, but earlier in time. We characterize the synchronization in the
parameter space (coupling strength, anticipation time) and introduce several
