Serotonin and Noradrenaline Reuptake Inhibitors Improve Micturition Control in Mice
Poor micturition control may cause profound distress, because proper voiding is mandatory for an active social life. Micturition results from the subtle interplay of central and peripheral components. It involves the coordination of autonomic and neuromuscular activity at the brainstem level, under the executive control of the prefrontal cortex. We tested the hypothe- sis that administration of molecules acting as reuptake inhibitors of serotonin, noradrenaline or both may exert a strong effect on the control of urine release, in a mouse model of overac- tive bladder. Mice were injected with cyclophosphamide (40 mg/kg), to increase micturition acts. Mice were then given one of four molecules: the serotonin reuptake inhibitor imipra- mine, its metabolite desipramine that acts on noradrenaline reuptake, the serotonin and nor- adrenaline reuptake inhibitor duloxetine or its active metabolite 4-hydroxy-duloxetine. Cyclophosphamide increased urine release without inducing overt toxicity or inflammation, except for increase in urothelium thickness. All the antidepressants were able to decrease the cyclophosphamide effects, as apparent from longer latency to the first micturition act, decreased number of urine spots and volume of released urine. These results suggest that serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors exert a strong and effective modulatory ef- fect on the control of urine release and prompt to additional studies on their central effects on brain areas involved in the social and behavioral control of micturition
Institutional progress and setbacks in implementation stage of territorial management policies and land use planning in Mendoza
Objective of present paper is the evaluation of the implementation stage of territorial management policies and land use planning in Mendoza. For this study case we have made a descriptive, formative, procedural and intermediate evaluation focusing on three dimensions: 1) The distance between what is ruled and what is done in fact 2) Implementation from the point of view of decision makers, 3) Search of agreement and civil participation. As a result we observe that policies lost efficiency mainly when conflict appears in the relation between organisms involved in rules application. We can also say that a gap exists in the processes of implementation characterized by low skill in coordinating and establishing priorities; with duplication of tasks and functions; a delay in the adoption of policies; discontinuous and heterogeneous participation of actors and high dependence of organisms «Secretaría de Ambiente y Desarrollo Sustentable».Fil: Ballabio, Alicia Marcela. Primary cutaneous anaplastic large cell lymphoma shows a distinct miRNA expression profile and reveals differences from tumor-stage mycosis fungoides
Copyright @ 2012 John Wiley & SonsThe miRNA expression profiles of skin biopsies from 14 primary cutaneous anaplastic large cell lymphoma (C-ALCL) patients were analysed with miRNA microarrays using the same control group of 12 benign inflammatory dermatoses (BID) as previously used to study the miRNA expression profile of tumor-stage mycosis fungoides (MF). We identified 13 differentially expressed miRNAs between C-ALCL and BID. The up-regulation of miR-155, miR-27b, miR-30c and miR-29b in C-ALCL was validated by miRNA-Q-PCR on independent study groups. Additionally, the miRNA expression profiles of C-ALCL were compared with those of tumor-stage MF. Although miRNA microarray analysis did not identify statistically significant differentially expressed miRNAs, miRNA-Q-PCR demonstrated statistically significantly differential expression of miR-155, miR-27b, miR-93, miR-29b and miR-92a between tumor-stage MF and C-ALCL. This study, the first describing the miRNA expression profile of C-ALCL, reveals differences with tumor-stage MF, suggesting a different contribution to the pathogenesis of these lymphomas. This work was funded by grants from

Quality check of European Datasets contributing to RECARE project
The aims of this document are the description of the procedures adopted to assess the quality of the data hosted on the JRC data management system and the quality of the data itself. The main aim of the data management platform is to provide data to the users in the project, in particular to case studies partners. Other aims are to provide a long term storage and web hosting to the data provided by partners and legacy data. Finally the data collected during the project will be made available to external users after the end of the project itself. Thus ensuring that the data hosted meets the highest quality standards is critical for the data management system.
This document is divided into chapters that can be briefly described as follows:
• Chapter 1: Description of the WP10 and the tasks that should be fulfilled
• Chapter 2: Description of the procedures adopted to assess data quality
• Chapter 3: Description Results of the data quality check for the hosted data
• Chapter 4: Technical description of the metadata and data consistencyJRC.D.3-Land Resource
Soil Erosion map of Europe based on high resolution input datasets
Modelling soil erosion in European Union is of major importance for agro-environmental policies. Soil erosion estimates are important inputs for the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and the implementation of the Soil Thematic Strategy. Using the findings of a recent pan-European data collection through the EIONET network, it was concluded that most Member States are applying the empirical Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) for the modelling soil erosion at National level. This model was chosen for the pan-European soil erosion risk assessment and it is based on 6 input factors.JRC.H.5-Land Resources Managemen
Fil: Ballabio, Marcela.Fil: Reyes, Malena Lucía
On the enhancement of nuclear reaction rates in high-temperature plasma
We argue that the Maxwellian approximation can essentially underestimate the
rates of some nuclear reactions in hot plasma under conditions very close to
thermal equilibrium. This phenomenon is demonstrated explicitly on the example
of reactions in self-sustained DT fusion plasma with admixture of light
elements X = Li, Be, C. A kinetic analysis shows that the reactivity
enhancement results from non-Maxwellian knock-on perturbations of ion
distributions caused by close collisions with energetic fusion products. It is
found that although the fraction of the knock-on ions is small, these particles
appreciably affect the D+X and T+X reaction rates. The phenomenon discussed is
likely to have general nature and can play role in other laboratory and
probably astrophysical plasma processes.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, to be published in Phys. Lett.
Geo-statistical model of Rainfall erosivity by using high temporal resolution precipitation data in Europe
Rainfall erosivity (R-factor) is among the 6 input factors in estimating soil erosion risk by using the empirical Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE). R-factor is a driving force for soil erosion modelling and potentially can be used in flood risk assessments, landslides susceptibility, post-fire damage assessment, application of agricultural management practices and climate change modelling. The rainfall erosivity is extremely difficult to model at large scale (national, European) due to lack of high temporal resolution precipitation data which cover long-time series. In most cases, R-factor is estimated based on empirical equations which take into account precipitation volume.JRC.H.5 - Land Resources Managemen
Mid-Infrared Plasmonic Platform Based on n-Doped Ge-on-Si: Molecular Sensing with Germanium Nano-Antennas on Si
CMOS-compatible, heavily-doped semiconductor
films are very promising for applications in mid-infrared
plasmonic devices because the real part of their dielectric
function is negative and broadly tunable in this wavelength
range. In this work we investigate n-type doped germanium
epilayers grown on Si substrates. We design and realize Ge nanoantennas
on Si substrates demonstrating the presence of localized
plasmon resonances, and exploit them for molecular sensing in
the mid-infrared
