A Numerical Investigation of the Effects of Classical Phase Space Structure on a Quantum System
We present a detailed numerical study of a chaotic classical system and its
quantum counterpart. The system is a special case of a kicked rotor and for
certain parameter values possesses cantori dividing chaotic regions of the
classical phase space. We investigate the diffusion of particles through a
cantorus; classical diffusion is observed but quantum diffusion is only
significant when the classical phase space area escaping through the cantorus
per kicking period greatly exceeds Planck's constant. A quantum analysis
confirms that the cantori act as barriers. We numerically estimate the
classical phase space flux through the cantorus per kick and relate this
quantity to the behaviour of the quantum system. We introduce decoherence via
environmental interactions with the quantum system and observe the subsequent
increase in the transport of quantum particles through the boundary.Comment: 15 pages, 22 figure
Generating socially appropriate tutorial dialog
Analysis of student-tutor coaching dialogs suggest that good human tutors attend to and attempt to influence the motivational state of learners. Moreover, they are sensitive to the social face of the learner, and seek to mitigate the potential face threat of their comments. This paper describes a dialog generator for pedagogical agents that takes motivation and face threat factors into account. This enables the agent to interact with learners in a socially appropriate fashion, and foster intrinsic motivation on the part of the learner, which in turn may lead to more positive learner affective states

Exclusive double-diffractive production of open charm in proton-proton and proton-antiproton collisions
We calculate differential cross sections for exclusive double diffractive
(EDD) production of open charm in proton-proton and proton-antiproton
collisions. Sizeable cross sections are found. The EDD contribution constitutes
about 1 % of the total inclusive cross section for open charm production. A few
differential distributions are shown and discussed. The EDD contribution falls
faster both with transverse momentum of the quark/antiquark and the invariant mass than in the inclusive case.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figure
Analysis and simulations for a phaseâfield fracture model at finite strains based on modified invariants
Phaseâfield models have already been proven to predict complex fracture patterns for brittle fracture at small strains. In this paper we discuss a model for phaseâfield fracture at finite deformations in more detail. Among the identification of crack location and projection of crack growth the numerical stability is one of the main challenges in solid mechanics. Here we present a phaseâfield model at finite strains, which takes into account the anisotropy of damage by applying an anisotropic split of the modified invariants of the right CauchyâGreen strain tensor. We introduce a suitable weak notion of solution that also allows for a spatial and temporal discretization of the model. In this framework we study the existence of solutions and we show that the timeâdiscrete solutions converge in a weak sense to a solution of the timeâcontinuous formulation of the model. Numerical examples in two and three space dimensions illustrate the range of validity of the analytical results
Novel gonadal characteristics in an aged bovine freemartin
The gonads from a five year old freemartin Holstein animal were subjected to morphological analysis and to immunohistochemistry using antibodies against developmental and functional markers. We demonstrate, for the first time, the retention of anti-mullerian hormone (AMH) producing intratubular cells (Sertoli cells) in the context of abundant steroidogenic interstitial cells, and structures consistent with clusters of luteal cells. This novel report describes the clinical, gross and histological findings accompanying this newly described gonadal immunophenotype, and its implication in the understanding of freemartin development
A calibration method for broad-bandwidth cavity enhanced absorption spectroscopy performed with supercontinuum radiation
An efficient calibration method has been developed for broad-bandwidth cavity enhanced absorption spectroscopy. The calibration is performed using phase shift cavity ring-down spectroscopy, which is conveniently implemented through use of an acousto-optic tunable filter (AOTF). The AOTF permits a narrowband portion of the SC spectrum to be scanned over the full high-reflectivity bandwidth of the cavity mirrors. After calibration the AOTF is switched off and broad-bandwidth CEAS can be performed with the same light source without any loss of alignment to the set-up. We demonstrate the merits of the method by probing transitions of oxygen molecules O-2 and collisional pairs of oxygen molecules (O-2)(2) in the visible spectral range
A posteriori inclusion of parton density functions in NLO QCD final-state calculations at hadron colliders: The APPLGRID Project
A method to facilitate the consistent inclusion of cross-section measurements
based on complex final-states from HERA, TEVATRON and the LHC in proton parton
density function (PDF) fits has been developed. This can be used to increase
the sensitivity of LHC data to deviations from Standard Model predictions. The
method stores perturbative coefficients of NLO QCD calculations of final-state
observables measured in hadron colliders in look-up tables. This allows the
posteriori inclusion of parton density functions (PDFs), and of the strong
coupling, as well as the a posteriori variation of the renormalisation and
factorisation scales in cross-section calculations.
The main novelties in comparison to original work on the subject are the use
of higher-order interpolation, which substantially improves the trade-off
between accuracy and memory use, and a CPU and computer memory optimised way to
construct and store the look-up table using modern software tools.
It is demonstrated that a sufficient accuracy on the cross-section
calculation can be achieved with reasonably small look-up table size by using
the examples of jet production and electro-weak boson (Z, W) production in
proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 14 TeV at the LHC.
The use of this technique in PDF fitting is demonstrated in a PDF-fit to HERA
data and simulated LHC jet cross-sections as well as in a study of the jet
cross-section uncertainties at various centre-of-mass energies
Heavy-quark mass dependence in global PDF analyses and 3- and 4-flavour parton distributions
We study the sensitivity of our recent MSTW 2008 NLO and NNLO PDF analyses to
the values of the charm- and bottom-quark masses, and we provide additional
public PDF sets for a wide range of these heavy-quark masses. We quantify the
impact of varying m_c and m_b on the cross sections for W, Z and Higgs
production at the Tevatron and the LHC. We generate 3- and 4-flavour versions
of the (5-flavour) MSTW 2008 PDFs by evolving the input PDFs and alpha_S
determined from fits in the 5-flavour scheme, including the eigenvector PDF
sets necessary for calculation of PDF uncertainties. As an example of their
use, we study the difference in the Z total cross sections at the Tevatron and
LHC in the 4- and 5-flavour schemes. Significant differences are found,
illustrating the need to resum large logarithms in Q^2/m_b^2 by using the
5-flavour scheme. The 4-flavour scheme is still necessary, however, if cuts are
imposed on associated (massive) b-quarks, as is the case for the experimental
measurement of Z b bbar production and similar processes.Comment: 40 pages, 11 figures. Grids can be found at

Small x resummation in collinear factorisation
The summation of the small x-corrections to hard-scattering QCD amplitudes by
collinear factorisation method is reconsidered and the K-factor is derived in
leading ln x approximation with a result differing from the corresponding
expression by Catani and Hautmann (Nucl. Phys. B 427, 475, 1994). The
significance of the difference is demonstrated in the examples of structure
function F_L and of exclusive vector meson electroproduction. The formulation
covers the channels of non-vanishing conformal spin n paving the way for new
