    The BIOEXPLOIT Project

    The EU Framework 6 Integrated Project BIOEXPLOIT concerns the exploitation of natural plant biodiversity for the pesticide-free production of food. It focuses on the pathogens Phytophthora infestans, Septoria tritici, Blumeria graminis, Puccinia spp. and Fusarium spp. and on the crops wheat, barley, tomato and potato. The project commenced in October 2005, comprises 45 laboratories in 12 countries, and is carried out by partners from research institutes, universities, private companies and small-medium enterprises. The project has four strategic objectives covered in eight sub-projects. These objectives relate to (i) understanding the molecular components involved in durable disease resistance, (ii) exploring and exploiting the natural biodiversity in disease resistance, (iii) accelerating the introduction of marker-assisted breeding and genetic engineering in the EU plant breeding industry, and (iv) coordinating and integrating resistance breeding research, providing training in new technologies, disseminating the results, and transferring knowledge and technologies to the industry

    Effect of disorder on the conductance of a Cu atomic point contact

    We present a systematic study of the effect of the disorder in copper point contacts. We show that peaks in the conductance histogram of copper point contacts shift upon addition of nickel impurities. The shift increases initially linerarly with the nickel concentration, thus confirming that it is due to disorder in the nanowire, in accordance with predictions. In general, this shift is modelled as a resistance R_s which is placed in series with the contact resistance R_c. However, we obtain different R_s values for the two peaks in the histogram, R_s being larger for the peak at higher conductance.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

    An Outlook on the Localisation and Structure-Function Relationships of R Proteins in Solanum

    The co-evolution of plants and plant-pathogens shaped a multi-layered defence system in plants, in which Resistance proteins (R proteins) play a significant role. A fundamental understanding of the functioning of these R proteins and their position in the broader defence system of the plant is essential. Sub-project 3 of the BIOEXPLOIT programme studies how R proteins are activated upon effector recognition and how recognition is conveyed in resistance signalling pathways, using the solanaceous R proteins Rx1 (from S. tuberosum spp. andigena; conferring extreme resistance against Potato Virus X), I-2 (from S. lycopersicon; mediating resistance to Fusarium oxysporum) and Mi-1.2 (from S. lycopersicon; conferring resistance to Meloidogyne incognita) as model systems. The results obtained in this project will serve as a model for other R proteins and will be translated to potential applications or alternative strategies for disease resistance. These include the modification of the recognition specificity of R proteins with the aim to obtain broad spectrum resistance to major pathogens in potato

    Magnetic properties of Co doped Nb clusters

    From magnetic deflection experiments on isolated Co doped Nb clusters we made the interesting observation of some clusters being magnetic, while others appear to be non-magnetic. There are in principle two explanations for this behavior. Either the local moment at the Co site is completely quenched or it is screened by the delocalized electrons of the cluster, i.e. the Kondo effect. In order to reveal the physical origin, we conducted a combined theoretical and experimental investigation. First, we established the ground state geometry of the clusters by comparing the experimental vibrational spectra with those obtained from a density functional theory study. Then, we performed an analyses based on the Anderson impurity model. It appears that the non-magnetic clusters are due to a complete quenching of the local Co moment and not due to the Kondo effect. In addition, the magnetic behavior of the clusters can be understood from an inspection of their electronic structure. Here magnetism is favored when the effective hybridization around the chemical potential is small, while the absence of magnetism is signalled by a large effective hybridization around the chemical potential.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figure

    Nambu monopoles in lattice Electroweak theory

    We considered the lattice electroweak theory at realistic values of α\alpha and θW\theta_W and for large values of the Higgs mass. We investigated numerically the properties of topological objects that are identified with quantum Nambu monopoles. We have found that the action density near the Nambu monopole worldlines exceeds the density averaged over the lattice in the physical region of the phase diagram. Moreover, their percolation probability is found to be an order parameter for the transition between the symmetric and the broken phases. Therefore, these monopoles indeed appear as real physical objects. However, we have found that their density on the lattice increases with increasing ultraviolet cutoff. Thus we conclude, that the conventional lattice electroweak theory is not able to predict the density of Nambu monopoles. This means that the description of Nambu monopole physics based on the lattice Weinberg - Salam model with finite ultraviolet cutoff is incomplete. We expect that the correct description may be obtained only within the lattice theory that involves the description of TeV - scale physics.Comment: LATE

    Model wine solutions: Colour and composition changes during ageing

    The interaction between malvidin 3-glucoside, the main anthocyanin in red wine made from Vitis vinifera grapes, and (+)-catechin and the effect on this interaction of ferric ions and acetaldehyde was examined. In the models not containing acetaldehyde losses of malvidin 3-glucoside were observed, but there were only negligible losses of catechin; no new compounds were observed. In the presence of acetaldehyde the formation of new compounds was determined by high performance liquid chromatography; this formation coincided with rapid losses in the concentrations of malvidin 3-glucoside and catechin. A molecular ion at m/z 809 was determined by FAB MS, corresponding to a dimer consisting of malvidin 3-glucoside linked to catechin by an acetaldehyde bridge, according to a mechanism previously suggested by TIMBER-LAKE and BRIDLE (1976). Concurrent with the losses in anthocyanins, qualitative and quantitative changes in visible colour were also observed, consisting of changes in the wavelength of maximum absorbance (λmax) and in maximum absorbance intensity (Amax). Models containing malvidin 3-glucoside plus catechin or catechin plus ferric ions showed a marked decrease in their λmax from 525 nm to 440 nm; there was little net effect of the ferric ions on these changes. The model containing acetaldehyde showed a large increase in Amax while the λmax showed a bathochromic shift from 524 nm to 557 nm; colour decreased after achieving a maximum and the λmax decreased slightly.     The Impact of the Massive Young Star GL 2591 on its Circumstellar Material: Temperature, Density and Velocity Structure

    The temperature, density and kinematics of the gas and dust surrounding the luminous young stellar object GL~2591 are investigated on scales as small as 100 AU, probed by 4.7 micron absorption spectroscopy, to over 60,000 AU, probed by single-dish submillimeter spectroscopy. These two scales are connected by interferometric 86-226 GHz images of size 60,000 AU and resolution 2000 AU in continuum and molecular lines.     Interplay of Peltier and Seebeck effects in nanoscale nonlocal spin valves

    We have experimentally studied the role of thermoelectric effects in nanoscale nonlocal spin valve devices. A finite element thermoelectric model is developed to calculate the generated Seebeck voltages due to Peltier and Joule heating in the devices. By measuring the first, second and third harmonic voltage response non locally, the model is experimentally examined. The results indicate that the combination of Peltier and Seebeck effects contributes significantly to the nonlocal baseline resistance. Moreover, we found that the second and third harmonic response signals can be attributed to Joule heating and temperature dependencies of both Seebeck coefficient and resistivity.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Measurements of total alkalinity and inorganic dissolved carbon in the Atlantic Ocean and adjacent Southern Ocean between 2008 and 2010

    Water column dissolved inorganic carbon and total alkalinity were measured during five hydrographic sections in the Atlantic Ocean and Drake Passage. The work was funded through the Strategic Funding Initiative of the UK's Oceans2025 programme, which ran from 2007 to 2012. The aims of this programme were to establish the regional budgets of natural and anthropogenic carbon in the North Atlantic, the South Atlantic, and the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean, as well as the rates of change of these budgets. This paper describes in detail the dissolved inorganic carbon and total alkalinity data collected along east–west sections at 47° N to 60° N, 24.5° N, and 24° S in the Atlantic and across two Drake Passage sections. Other hydrographic and biogeochemical parameters were measured during these sections, and relevant standard operating procedures are mentioned here. Over 95% of dissolved inorganic carbon and total alkalinity samples taken during the 24.5° N, 24° S, and the Drake Passage sections were analysed onboard and subjected to a first-level quality control addressing technical and analytical issues. Samples taken along 47° N to 60° N were analysed and subjected to quality control back in the laboratory. Complete post-cruise second-level quality control was performed using cross-over analysis with historical data in the vicinity of measurements, and data were submitted to the CLIVAR and Carbon Hydrographic Data Office (CCHDO), the Carbon Dioxide Information Analysis Center (CDIAC) and and will be included in the Global Ocean Data Analyses Project, version 2 (GLODAP 2), the upcoming update of Key et al. (2004)
