Tomographic Characterization of a Multifunctional Composite High-Impedance Surface
© 1963-2012 IEEE. The performance of a multifunctional composite high-impedance surface (HIS) has been evaluated using the coherent Doppler tomography (CDT) and finite-impulse response (FIR) filtering techniques. A combination of embroidery and advanced laser manufacturing processes were used to fabricate the conformable multifunctional glass fiber reenforced polymer HIS. The CDT method was utilized because it enabled the generation of a high-resolution tomographic map of the HIS reflectivity. Tomograms generated at high incidence angles (>80° from normal) were used to localize and FIR filter unwanted scattering associated with the ground plane edges and HIS transition regions. The resulting scattered fields from a defect (metallic block positioned in the center of the tomogram) were then used to gain a significantly distinctive insight into the HIS scattering properties. Furthermore, unlike traditional methods for characterizing HISs, the CDT and FIR methods presented herein are applicable to electrically large and conformal HISs
Performance, Nutrient Digestibility, and Meat Quality of Bali Cattle Fed a Ration Supplemented with Soybean Oil Calcium Soap and Cashew Fruit Flour
The study to evaluate growth performance, nutrient digestibility, blood metabolites profile and meat fatty acid of Bali cattle treated with 3 different types of rations were conducted using a completely randomized block design with 4 replications. Ration treatments were R1: 40% native grass (NG) + 60% concentrate, R2: 40% NG + 60% concentrate supplemented with 5% soybean oil calcium soap (SOCS), and R3: (40% NG + 60% concentrate supplemented with 5% SOCS + 10% cashew fruit flour (CFF). Variables measured were growth performance, nutrients digestibility, blood metabolites, and meat fatty acid profile. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the differences between treatment means were examined by Duncan Multiple Range Test. Results of the study showed that the 3 different feed treatments did not have any significant effect on dry matter intake and organic matter intake, daily body weight gain, feed efficiency, crude fiber, ADF and NDF digestibilities, cholesterol, triglycerides, low density lipoprotein (LDL), high density lipoprotein (HDL), total fatty acid contents and content of unsaturated and saturated meat fatty acids of Bali cattle meat. Different treatment rations also did not affect dry matter digestibility, however the treatments significantly affect the organic matter, crude protein, and fat digestibility (P<0.05). Bali cattle fed 5% SOCS (R2) and 5% SOCS + 10% CFF (R3) had higher organic matter and ether extract digestibilities and linoleic acid content of meat (P<0.05) compared with the control (R1). The Bali cattle fed with R1 and R2 had higher crude protein digestibility (P<0.05) compared with that of R3. It is concluded that the supplementation of 5% SOCS and 10% CFF in the ration improved the digestibility of organic matter, ether extract and linoleic fatty acids content in Bali cattle meat
Why Women Are Blamed for Being Sexually Harassed:The Effects of Empathy for Female Victims and Male Perpetrators
The #MeToo movement has highlighted the widespread problem of menâs sexual harassment of women. Women are typically reluctant to make a sexual-harassment complaint and often encounter victim-blaming attitudes when they do, especially from men. Informed by the social identity perspective, two experiments examined the influence of empathyâboth for women who are sexually harassed and for male harassersâon menâs and womenâs propensity to blame victims. In Study 1, university students (N = 97) responded to a vignette describing a male studentâs harassment of a female student. Men blamed the victim more than women, which was explained by their greater empathy for the male perpetrator but not lesser empathy for the female victim. Using the same vignette, Study 2 asked university students (N = 135) to take either the male perpetratorâs or the female victimâs perspective. Regardless of participant gender, participants who took the male-perpetratorâs perspective versus the female-victimâs perspective reported greater victim blame, and this was explained by their greater empathy for the male perpetrator and lesser empathy for the female victim. Together, the findings provide evidence to suggest that male-perpetrator empathy may be equally or more important than female-victim empathy for explaining victim blame for sexual harassment. Implications for social change, including policies to limit the effects of male-perpetrator empathy when responding to sexual-harassment complaints are discussed. Self Running Droplet: Emergence of Regular Motion from Nonequilibrium Noise
Spontaneous motion of an oil droplet driven by chemical nonequilibricity is
reported. It is shown that the droplet undergoes regular rhythmic motion under
appropriately designed boundary conditions, whereas it exhibits random motion
in an isotropic environment. This study is a novel manifestation on the direct
energy transformation of chemical energy into regular spatial-motion under
isothermal conditions. A simple mathematical equation including noise
reproduces the essential feature of the transition from irregularity into
periodic regular motion. Our results will inspire the theoretical study on the
mechanism of molecular motors in living matter, working under significant

A Web-based Visual Simulator for Hospital Management Using Discrete Event Simulation
Abstract: Access, demand and resource management issues in hospitals continue to plague the area of hospital management. Access is the capacity to provide patients with health care in a timely fashion, demand is a community's need for health care satisfied by available health services and resource management is the use of various resources available to hospitals for managing them. Problems in these three areas lead to long waits in emergency, prolonged periods for patients on procedural waiting lists and cancellation of surgical operations. To support hospital managers in effective management of a hospital, managers require software that presents them with necessary information about resources, such as beds available for patients in emergency. This study presents a new Web-based visual solution to the abovementioned problems using discrete event simulation. This system builds on our previous work where simulations are generated using a Web site, but the Web site generates an enormous quantity of data as output. This output needs to be processed in a very short amount of time (given managers need for quick access to information) and displayed in visual manner for easy use and interpretation by managers. Our software solution is absolutely novel as our earlier work on which the new solution is based was also novel as a solution for hospital managers
Smearing Effect in Plane-Wave Matrix Model
Motivated by the usual D2-D0 system, we consider a configuration composed of
flat membrane and fuzzy sphere membrane in plane-wave matrix model, and
investigate the interaction between them. The configuration is shown to lead to
a non-trivial interaction potential, which indicates that the fuzzy sphere
membrane really behaves like a graviton, giant graviton. Interestingly, the
interaction is of r^{-3} type rather than r^{-5} type. We interpret it as the
interaction incorporating the smearing effect due to the fact that the
considered supersymmetric flat membrane should span and spin in four

The Norwegian physicist Lars Vegard studied with William H. Bragg in Leeds and then with Wilhelm Wien in WĂŒrzburg. There, in 1912, he heard a lecture by Max Laue describing the first X-ray diffraction experiments and took accurate notes which he promptly sent to Bragg. Although now remembered mainly for his work on the physics of the aurora borealis, Vegard also did important pioneering work in three areas of crystallography. He derived chemical insight from a series of related crystal structures that he determined, Vegard's Law relates the unit-cell dimensions of mixed crystals to those of the pure components, and he determined some of the first crystal structures of gases solidified at cryogenic temperatures
p-branes on the waves
We present a large family of simple, explicit ten-dimensional supergravity
solutions describing extended extremal supersymmetric Ramond-Ramond p-branes
embedded into time-dependent dilaton-gravity plane waves of an arbitrary
(isotropic) profile, with the brane world-volume aligned parallel to the
propagation direction of the wave. Generalizations to the non-extremal case are

A Note on D-brane - Anti-D-brane Interactions in Plane Wave Backgrounds
We study aspects of the interaction between a D-brane and an anti-D-brane in
the maximally supersymmetric plane wave background of type IIB superstring
theory, which is equipped with a mass parameter mu. An early such study in flat
spacetime (mu=0) served to sharpen intuition about D-brane interactions,
showing in particular the key role of the ``stringy halo'' that surrounds a
D-brane. The halo marks the edge of the region within which tachyon
condensation occurs, opening a gateway to new non-trivial vacua of the theory.
It seems pertinent to study the fate of the halo for non--zero mu. We focus on
the simplest cases of a Lorentzian brane with p=1 and an Euclidean brane with
p=-1, the D--instanton. For the Lorentzian brane, we observe that the halo is
unaffected by the presence of non--zero mu. This most likely extends to other
(Lorentzian) p. For the Euclidean brane, we find that the halo is affected by
non-zero mu. As this is related to subtleties in defining the exchange
amplitude between Euclidean branes in the open string sector, we expect this to

Supersymmetric Intersections of M-branes and pp-waves
We study supersymmetric intersections of M2 and M5 branes with different
pp-waves of M-theory. We consider first M-brane probes in the background of
pp-waves and determine under which conditions the embedding is supersymmetric.
We particularize our formalism to the case of pp-waves with 32, 24 and 20
supersymmetries. We also construct supergravity solutions for the brane-wave
system. Generically these solutions are delocalised along some directions
transverse to the brane and preserve the same number of supersymmetries as in
