Who visits World Heritage? A comparative analysis of three cultural sites
Heritage tourism is a growing segment of the modern tourism industry, and several studies have been undertaken to identify the individuals who participate in this type of tourism. These have indicated that heritage tourists, generally, are middle class, middle age, and well educated. However, despite their iconic role, there has been relatively little attention paid to profile of visitors to World Heritage Sites. This study aims to better understand the demography of this specific tourism segment through the use of survey-based research at three geographically diverse World Heritage Sites: Independence Hall in the USA, Studenica Monastery in Serbia, and the Archaeological Site of Volubilis in Morocco. Through the use of descriptive statistics, several over-arching trends were noted among the three sites. World Heritage Site visitors were found to be very well educated, but they did not have any similarities in relation to age, income, or residence, which contrasts the âgeneralâ heritage tourist typology. However, there were several World Heritage specific trends. While this work is a snapshot of the three sites under study and thus is difficult to generalize, it provides the basis for more comprehensive demographic research on visitors to World Heritage Sites
BowScribe: Supporting the violinist's performance model
Musicians often learn about their vision of a
piece through practicing it and listening to recordings. However,
this does not always free the player to develop his or her own
interpretation of the piece, especially when technique is lacking. We
have developed software, the BowScribe markup language, that supports
a violinist in creating a ``performance model'' of a piece currently
beyond his or her playing skills, by allowing the player fine control
over tempo, volume, and articulation, including playing of chords, at
a level of expressiveness and flexibility that is significantly beyond
the MIDI playback modes of popular music notation software. BowScribe
has been used by the first author (who was trained as a prfessional
violinist) to create a model of the entire Bach Chaconne (edited by
Glamian), a long and demanding piece of music for solo violin that has
many phrases that span groups of chords as well as melodic passages.
The markup language specified chords to be rolled in two classic ways,
as well as a wide variety of other strokes, including greater volume
for individual notes in long slurs and small but essential variations
in tempo
World Heritage as a placebo brand: A comparative analysis of three sites and marketing implications
The UNESCO World Heritage List is often regarded as a successful tourism brand that motivates site nominations. However, there is relatively little research dealing specifically with World Heritage (WH) brand attraction effects, and what does exist shows conflicting results. There is a significant research gap in terms of awareness of the WH brand and its potential impact on visitation, which this study seeks to fill through a comparative analysis of three diverse case studies: Independence Hall, USA; Studenica Monastery, Serbia; and the Archaeological Site of Volubilis, Morocco. Survey data (n=771) from these three sites was collected and analyzed resulting in three distinct clusters of visitors. One of the clusters does exhibit higher levels of awareness of the WH brand, but members of this group were not motivated by this knowledge when planning their site visit. It is concluded that the WH brand may function as a placebo, and that its importance may be tied more to political interests than economic advancement. Thus, dependency on the WH List for tourism development may potentially be detrimental for locations in the long-term. The WH brandâs placebo effect could result in long-term problems for both the site and those whose livelihoods depend on tourism
Men's Lived Experience of Mental Health during COVID-19: Research Report to Australian Men's Health Forum
A mixed-methods study of men in Australia explored their lived experience of mental health during COVID-19 from 2020 to 2021. An online survey and semi-structured interviews found that social determinants of health such as the nature of employment, financial stability, quality of relationships, mental illness diagnoses and access to support services had varying impacts on reported levels of psychological distress. Isolation, slowing down, help-seeking and cumulative stress were identified as major themes, and men employed a range of coping strategies that were both helpful and harmful to their ongoing mental wellbeing. The study has implications for (1) understanding menâs lived experience, (2) challenging previously uncontested stereotypes about male attitudes and behaviours, (3) developing male-friendly support services, and (4) contributing to mental health policies in the event of future pandemic situations. The study was commissioned by the National Mental Health Commission and funded by Australian Menâs Health Forum and Western Sydney University
âVIOLETâ: a fluorescence-based simulation exercise for training healthcare workers in the use of personal protective equipment
Background
Healthcare workers caring for patients with high-consequence infectious diseases (HCIDs) require protection from pathogen exposure, for example by wearing personal protective equipment (PPE). Protection is acquired through the inherent safety of the PPE components, but also their safe and correct use, supported by adequate training and user familiarity. However, the evidence base for HCID PPE ensembles and any associated training is lacking, with subsequent variation between healthcare providers.
Aim
To develop an evidence-based assessment and training tool for evaluating PPE ensembles and doffing protocols, in the assessment of patients with suspected HCIDs.
Methods
VIOLET (Visualising Infection with Optimised Light for Education and Training) comprises a healthcare mannequin adapted to deliver simulated bodily fluids containing UV-fluorescent tracers. On demand and remotely operated, the mannequin projectile vomits (blue), coughs (red), has diarrhoea (yellow) and is covered in sweat (orange). Wearing PPE, healthcare staff participate in an HCID risk assessment and examination of the âpatientâ, thereby becoming exposed to these bodily fluids. Contamination of PPE is visualized and body-mapped under UV light before and after removal. Observational findings and participant feedback, around its use as a training exercise, is also recorded.
Findings
Significant contamination from different exposure events was seen, enabling evaluation of PPE and doffing procedures used. Observational data and participant feedback demonstrated its strengths and success as a training technique.
Conclusion
Simulation exercises using VIOLET provide evidence-based assessment of PPE ensembles, and are a valuable resource for training of healthcare staff in wearing and safe doffing of PPE
Use of ultraviolet-fluorescence-based simulation in evaluation of personal protective equipment worn for first assessment and care of a patient with suspected high-consequence infectious disease
Background: Variations currently exist across the UK in the choice of personal protective equipment (PPE) used by healthcare workers when caring for patients with suspected high-consequence infectious diseases (HCIDs).
Aim: To test the protection afforded to healthcare workers by current PPE ensembles during assessment of a suspected HCID case, and to provide an evidence base to justify proposal of a unified PPE ensemble for healthcare workers across the UK.
Methods: One âbasic levelâ (enhanced precautions) PPE ensemble and five âsuspected caseâ PPE ensembles were evaluated in volunteer trials using âVioletâ; an ultraviolet-fluorescence-based simulation exercise to visualize exposure/contamination events. Contamination was photographed and mapped.
Findings: There were 147 post-simulation and 31 post-doffing contamination events, from a maximum of 980, when evaluating the basic level of PPE. Therefore, this PPE ensemble did not afford adequate protection, primarily due to direct contamination of exposed areas of the skin. For the five suspected case ensembles, 1584 post-simulation contamination events were recorded, from a maximum of 5110. Twelve post-doffing contamination events were also observed (face, two events; neck, one event; forearm, one event; lower legs, eight events).
Conclusion: All suspected case PPE ensembles either had post-doffing contamination events or other significant disadvantages to their use. This identified the need to design a unified PPE ensemble and doffing procedure, incorporating the most protective PPE considered for each body area. This work has been presented to, and reviewed by, key stakeholders to decide on a proposed unified ensemble, subject to further evaluation
Recommendations for Communication Centers based on Student and Tutor Reflections: Insights about Studentsâ Reasons for Visiting, Session Outcomes, and Characteristics of the Tutoring Approach
This paper explores studentsâ experiences with communication centers and offers recommendations for new and expanding communication centers. We combine empirical research conducted on student reflection forms with our own insight as tutors, instructors, and directors and with existing literature to offer considerations for enhancing the services offered by communication centers. We propose communication centers consider the purposes for and outcomes of studentsâ visits, as well as what attributes of the tutoring and tutors students appreciate. Reasons for visiting the communication center included to receive help with content and structure, delivery, and sources and visual aids. Students reported getting assistance with drafting, delivery, supporting, and debriefing their presentations. The approaches to tutoring students appreciated included guided learning, clarification of course materials, and identification of both their strengths and weaknesses. Tutor characteristics appreciated by students were their prior teaching experience, good listening skills, creativity, and demeanor
Plant closures and taskforce responses:an analysis of the impact of and policy response to MG Rover in Birmingham
This paper explores the socio-economic impacts and associated policy responses to the collapse of MG Rover at Longbridge in Birmingham. Critically, it attempts to move beyond a âstandardâ taskforce narrative that emphasizes the role of the regional response. While recognizing that significant policy âsuccessesâ were indeed evident at the regional level in anticipating and responding to the crisis, a wider perspective is required that situates this taskforce response in (1) a fuller understanding of labour market precariousness (that in turn mitigates some of its policy âsuccessesâ), and (2) more local perspectives that highlight the local impacts of closure, the role of the neighbourhood level officials and the third sector in mediating these. Taking this broader perspective suggests that longer-term, workers face a precarious situation and the need for policies to create and sustain âgood qualityâ jobs remains paramount. Adding in more local perspectives, a key lesson from the Longbridge experience for dealing with closures more generally is that the public policy responses must be: multidimensional in that they transcend narrow sector-based concerns and addresses broader spatial impacts; inclusive in that they build on a broad coalition of economic and social stakeholders; and long-term in that they acknowledge that adaptation takes many years. If anything, the Birmingham Longbridge experience demonstrates the difficulty of achieving such responses in the context of crisis where action is imperative and deliberation a luxury
