PT-symmetry in honeycomb photonic lattices
We apply gain/loss to honeycomb photonic lattices and show that the
dispersion relation is identical to tachyons - particles with imaginary mass
that travel faster than the speed of light. This is accompanied by PT-symmetry
breaking in this structure. We further show that the PT-symmetry can be
restored by deforming the lattice
Fractoluminescence characterization of the energy dissipated during fast fracture of glass
Fractoluminescence experiments are performed on two kinds of silicate
glasses. All the light spectra collected during dynamic fracture reveal a black
body radiator behaviour, which is interpreted as a crack velocity-dependent
temperature rise close to the crack tip. Crack velocities are estimated to be
of the order of 1300 m.s and fracture process zones are shown to extend

Orthogeriatrics: a vital requirement for improving fragility fracture patient care internationally with particular reference to Turkey
peer reviewedPurpose: Orthogeriatrics is a team approach that aims to provide adequate and timely intervention for individuals suffering from fragility fractures, particularly hip fractures. These patients are mostly the frailest older adults. The aim of orthogeriatrics is to re-gain functionality as early as possible and to decrease disability and mortality. Some developed countries
have established orthogeriatric services, while many others, including Turkey, have so far not. Here, to identify areas for improvement, we outline the status of the orthogeriatrics in older adults in Turkey.
Methods: We present clear calls for action, emphasizing possible and noteworthy areas for improvement.
Results: Our proposals include the need for an easily applied, short version of comprehensive geriatric assessment; appropriate laboratory testing on admission; paracetamol with a special emphasis in its dosings and clues for state-of-the-art analgesic management; the essential need to introduce oral nutritional supplementation, irrespective of nutritional status; the need for
vitamin D commencement, in almost all patients; and starting osteoporosis treatment in fracture hospitalization, whenever appropriate. Last but not least, the ever-increasing prerequisite to establish “fracture liaison services” is stipulated.
Conclusion: We suggest that our recommendations offer great potential in Turkey, for the improvement of frail fracture patients’ care. We call the other countries that do not have established orthogeriatric lines to model our approach to improve the management of fracture patients globally
Critical features in electromagnetic anomalies detected prior to the L'Aquila earthquake
Electromagnetic (EM) emissions in a wide frequency spectrum ranging from kHz
to MHz are produced by opening cracks, which can be considered as the so-called
precursors of general fracture. We emphasize that the MHz radiation appears
earlier than the kHz in both laboratory and geophysical scale. An important
challenge in this field of research is to distinguish characteristic epochs in
the evolution of precursory EM activity and identify them with the equivalent
last stages in the earthquake (EQ) preparation process. Recently, we proposed
the following two epochs/stages model: (i) The second epoch, which includes the
finally emerged strong impulsive kHz EM emission is due to the fracture of the
high strength large asperities that are distributed along the activated fault
sustaining the system. (ii) The first epoch, which includes the initially
emerged MHz EM radiation is thought to be due to the fracture of a highly
heterogeneous system that surrounds the family of asperities. A catastrophic EQ
of magnitude Mw = 6.3 occurred on 06/04/2009 in central Italy. The majority of
the damage occurred in the city of L'Aquila. Clear kHz - MHz EM anomalies have
been detected prior to the L'Aquila EQ. Herein, we investigate the seismogenic
origin of the detected MHz anomaly. The analysis in terms of intermittent
dynamics of critical fluctuations reveals that the candidate EM precursor: (i)
can be described in analogy with a thermal continuous phase transition; (ii)
has anti-persistent behaviour. These features suggest that the emerged
candidate precursor could be triggered by microfractures in the highly
disordered system that surrounded the backbone of asperities of the activated

Managing Injuries of the Neck Trial (MINT) : design of a randomised controlled trial of treatments for whiplash associated disorders
Background: A substantial proportion of patients with whiplash injuries develop chronic
symptoms. However, the best treatment of acute injuries to prevent long-term problems is
uncertain. A stepped care treatment pathway has been proposed, in which patients are given advice
and education at their initial visit to the emergency department (ED), followed by review at three
weeks and physiotherapy for those with persisting symptoms. MINT is a two-stage randomised
controlled trial to evaluate two components of such a pathway: 1. use of The Whiplash Book versus
usual advice when patients first attend the emergency department; 2. referral to physiotherapy
versus reinforcement of advice for patients with continuing symptoms at three weeks.
Methods: Evaluation of the Whiplash Book versus usual advice uses a cluster randomised design
in emergency departments of eight NHS Trusts. Eligible patients are identified by clinicians in
participating emergency departments and are sent a study questionnaire within a week of their ED
attendance. Three thousand participants will be included. Patients with persisting symptoms three
weeks after their ED attendance are eligible to join an individually randomised study of
physiotherapy versus reinforcement of the advice given in ED. Six hundred participants will be
randomised. Follow-up is at 4, 8 and 12 months after their ED attendance. Primary outcome is the
Neck Disability Index (NDI), and secondary outcomes include quality of life and time to return to
work and normal activities. An economic evaluation is being carried out.
Conclusion: This paper describes the protocol and operational aspects of a complex intervention
trial based in NHS emergency and physiotherapy departments, evaluating two components of a
stepped-care approach to the treatment of whiplash injuries. The trial uses two randomisations,

Dirac Neutrinos, Dark Energy and Baryon Asymmetry
We explore a new origin of neutrino dark energy and baryon asymmetry in the
universe. The neutrinos acquire small masses through the Dirac seesaw
mechanism. The pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson associated with neutrino
mass-generation provides a candidate for dark energy. The puzzle of

Photonic realization of the relativistic Kronig-Penney model and relativistic Tamm surface states
Photonic analogues of the relativistic Kronig-Penney model and of
relativistic surface Tamm states are proposed for light propagation in fibre
Bragg gratings (FBGs) with phase defects. A periodic sequence of phase slips in
the FBG realizes the relativistic Kronig-Penney model, the band structure of
which being mapped into the spectral response of the FBG. For the semi-infinite
FBG Tamm surface states can appear and can be visualized as narrow resonance
peaks in the transmission spectrum of the grating
Sudden drop of fractal dimension of electromagnetic emissions recorded prior to significant earthquake
The variation of fractal dimension and entropy during a damage evolution
process, especially approaching critical failure, has been recently
investigated. A sudden drop of fractal dimension has been proposed as a
quantitative indicator of damage localization or a likely precursor of an
impending catastrophic failure. In this contribution, electromagnetic emissions
recorded prior to significant earthquake are analysed to investigate whether
they also present such sudden fractal dimension and entropy drops as the main
catastrophic event is approaching. The pre-earthquake electromagnetic time
series analysis results reveal a good agreement to the theoretically expected
ones indicating that the critical fracture is approaching
