Introduction: The traditional view of gifted students in education emphasizes cognitive skills and academic excellence. Practical subjects like physical education and sports have an underestimate role in their inclusion. Moreover, the diversity of concepts used as synonyms (without being so) leads to widespread confusion that does not benefit this type of student. Objective: The aim of this narrative review is analyzing the different models of identification of talent to contribute to the optimal development of gifted students. Method: This narrative review combines theoretical analysis and reflective insights to explore the role of physical education in socially including gifted students. Engaging with expert literature, the authors propose a holistic educational approach that employs physical education to foster cognitive abilities beyond motor skills. The study discusses two dimensions: (a) models for identifying and developing gifted students, and (b) the contributions of these models to their optimal development. Results and conclusions: 10 theories concerning gifted/talented students’ identification and/or development are presented and share key elements. They adopt a holistic approach, recognizing cognitive, physical, emotional, and social aspects. Interaction between individuals and their environment is emphasized, especially in sport field, with models like Bloom and Gilbon model highlighting gradual progress. Ericsson's theory underscores commitment and practice. Models like Gagné and Balyi stress individual differences. All theories view talent as evolving, not innate. Choosing a model depends on goals and students. Combining approaches from different models might offers a holistic view. Educators benefit from tailored strategies that consider individual needs and variations. Continuous assessment and adaptation foster well-rounded growth and potential in gifted students. This research was financed by the Ministry of Science and Innovation (SPAIN) in the framework of the research project “Impact of a physical activity programme aimed at gifted and talented students in primary education” (PID2022-137397NB-I00)

Management of Patients with Hernia or Incisional Hernia Undergoing Surgery for Morbid Obesity

Morbidly obese patients (MOPs) are predisposed to developing abdominal wall hernias with the potential complication of small bowel obstruction and other morbidity. We report our experience in treating morbidly obese patients. Hernia prophylaxis has been attempted as a means of decreasing the incisional hernia risk associated with weight loss surgery. The controversy regarding the optimal time and method of repair of abdominal wall hernias in patients undergoing open or laparoscopic gastric bypass is discussed with emphasis placed on either a simultaneous repair or splits of the omentum, and of leaving a plug in the hernia defect, to allow time to perform a delayed repair

Camel genetic resources conservation through tourism: A key sociocultural approach of camelback leisure riding

Camels are exotic elements, which can be comprised within adventure travel companies promoting ecotourism activities. Such recreations contribute to sustainable livelihoods for local communities and educational empowerment towards nature and its conservation. At present, some local camel breeds’ survival reduces to this animal-based leisure industry and its reliability to perform and promote customized services accurately. By conducting an on-site questionnaire to customers participating in camelback riding tours, we assessed the motivational factors affecting participation, satisfaction, and loyalty in this tourism segment that may have made it socially differentiated. The sixfold combination of staff performance, culture geography, diverse and humane close interaction, camel behavior and performance, sociotemporal context, and positive previous experience involves the elemental dimensions that explain customer satisfaction and return intention probability within this entertainment business. Customer knowledge is essential for stakeholders to build personalized riding experiences and align profits with environmental sustainability and biodiversity mainstream concerns into their everyday operations. In turn, domestic camel tourist rides could be managed as a viable path to nature conservation by helping endangered local breeds to avoid their functional devaluation and potential extinction

Digital vaginal palpation performed during clinical practice can help diagnose urinary, intestinal and sexual disorders, while perineometry is more useful for performing perineal exercises with biofeedback. This study verifies whether there is a correlation between values of Pelvic Floor Muscle Strength (PFMS) obtained through perineometry performed with an electronic perineometer and through digital vaginal palpation using the Oxford scale. This is a prospective cohort study with 330 measurements carried out in 110 women. Data were collected from 2007 to 2008 in the health service system in Itapecerica da Serra, São Paulo, Brazil. Evaluations were carried out at three points in time: up to 12 weeks of pregnancy; between 36-40 weeks; and between 42-60 days postpartum. The Spearman coefficient indicated a strong positive correlation between the two evaluation methods for the three evaluations (p<0.0001). The conclusion is that both methods are valid for measuring PFMS during pregnancy and after delivery. Thyroid gland involvement as the unique presentation of Langerhans cell histiocytosis is a rare phenomenon that can result in misdiagnosis. We report a case of Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) presenting as a thyroid mass. It is a 52-year-old woman who presented an enlarged, diffusely firm, nontender, nonmobile, and not particularly nodular thyroid gland with mild compressive symptoms. Ultrasound and fine-needle aspiration showed a unique right node with benign signs. Patient was referred to our Ambulatory Surgery Department, where a hemithyroidectomy was performed. Histologic evaluation of the right thyroid gland revealed an involvement by LCH, confirmed by immunohistochemical analysis showing Langerhans cells that were positive for CD1a. LCH was a completely incidental occult finding apparent only after surgical resection and examination of the gland. Patient was evaluated, and no evidence of systemic affectation was found. LCH can rarely involve the thyroid gland in adults. Few cases have been reported in the literature. Most patients had evidence of LCH involving other anatomic sites

Temporal Control of Leaf Complexity by miRNA-Regulated Licensing of Protein Complexes

The tremendous diversity of leaf shapes has caught the attention of naturalists for centuries. In addition to interspecific and intraspecific differences, leaf morphologies may differ in single plants according to age, a phenomenon known as heteroblasty. In Arabidopsis thaliana, the progression from the juvenile to the adult phase is characterized by increased leaf serration. A similar trend is seen in species with more complex leaves, such as the A. thaliana relative Cardamine hirsuta, in which the number of leaflets per leaf increases with age. Although the genetic changes that led to the overall simpler leaf architecture in A. thaliana are increasingly well understood, less is known about the events underlying age-dependent changes within single plants, in either A. thaliana or C. hirsuta. Here, we describe a conserved miRNA transcription factor regulon responsible for an age-dependent increase in leaf complexity. In early leaves, miR319-targeted TCP transcription factors interfere with the function of miR164-dependent and miR164-independent CUC proteins, preventing the formation of serrations in A. thaliana and of leaflets in C. hirsuta. As plants age, accumulation of miR156-regulated SPLs acts as a timing cue that destabilizes TCP-CUC interactions. The destabilization licenses activation of CUC protein complexes and thereby the gradual increase of leaf complexity in the newly formed organs. These findings point to posttranslational interaction between unrelated miRNA-targeted transcription factors as a core feature of these regulatory circuits.European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) fellowship; Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia fellowships; EMBO Installation Grant; National Natural Science Foundation of China grants: (31222029, 912173023); State Key Basic Research Program of China grant: (2013CB127000); Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft grants: (SPP1530 and a Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Award); Max Planck Society
