    Genetic diversity of ancient grape cultivars of the Crimea region

    A total of 76 accessions of Crimean autochthonous grape cultivars from the collection of the National Institute of Vine and Wine "Magarach" were genotyped using 22 nuclear and 3 chloroplast microsatellite loci (SSR) to characterize their genetic diversity. The total number of alleles was 238, the mean number of alleles per locus was 10.8 and the range of expected heterozygosity was 0.4-0.88. Several synonyms were identified based on the comparison of microsatellite profiles with INRA and EVD databases. Morphological, eno-carpological and eno-chemical characterization of number of cultivars using BBCH scale and OIV descriptors were performed.     Orbitally excited and hybrid mesons from the lattice

    We discuss in general the construction of gauge-invariant non-local meson operators on the lattice. We use such operators to study the PP- and DD-wave mesons as well as hybrid mesons in quenched QCD, with quark masses near the strange quark mass. The resulting spectra are compared with experiment for the orbital excitations. For the states produced by gluonic excitations (hybrid mesons) we find evidence of mixing for non-exotic quantum numbers. We give predictions for masses of the spin-exotic hybrid mesons with $J^{PC}=1^{-+},\ 0^{+-},and, and 2^{+-}$.Comment: 31 pages, LATEX, 8 postscript figures. Reference adde

    Gauge Invariant Smearing and Matrix Correlators using Wilson Fermions at beta=6.2

    We present an investigation of gauge invariant smearing for Wilson fermions on a 243×4824^3 \times 48 lattice at β=6.2\beta = 6.2. We demonstrate a smearing algorithm that allows a substantial improvement in the determination of the baryon spectrum obtained using propagators smeared at both source and sink, at only a small computational cost. We investigate the matrix of correlators constructed from local and smeared operators, and are able to expose excited states of both the mesons and baryons.Comment: at lattice `92. 4 pages latex + 3 postscript figures.     Manifestation of Sea Quark Effects in the Strong Coupling Constant in Lattice QCD

    We demonstrate that sea quark effects of a magnitude expected from renormalization group considerations are clearly visible in the strong coupling constant measured in current full QCD simulations. Building on this result an estimate of αMS(5)(MZ)\alpha_{\overline{MS}}^{(5)}(M_Z) is made employing the charmonium 1S1P1S-1P mass splitting calculated on full QCD configurations generated with two flavors of dynamical Kogut-Susskind quarks to fix the scale.Comment: 10 pages + 2 figures(postscript files), Latex files, compressed, uuencode tar file, UTHEP-28

    Screening masses in the SU(3) pure gauge theory and universality

    We determine from Polyakov loop correlators the screening masses in the deconfined phase of the (3+1)d SU(3) pure gauge theory at finite temperature near the transition, for two different channels of angular momentum and parity. Their ratio is compared with that of the massive excitations with the same quantum numbers in the 3d 3-state Potts model in the broken phase near the transition point at zero magnetic field. Moreover we study the inverse decay length of the correlation between the real parts and between the imaginary parts of the Polyakov loop and compare the results with expectations from perturbation theory and mean-field Polyakov loop models.Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures; version to appear on Nuclear Physics B (Section 3.1 revisited; a few comments, a table and a reference added; fit results included in Fig. 8

    Genetic clustering and parentage analysis of Western Balkan grapevines (Vitis vinifera L.)

    A total of 90 grapevine samples collected in five countries of the Western Balkan region were evaluated for trueness-to-type and kinship relations based on comparative analysis with 1,130 grapevine genotypes held at the INRA "Domaine de Vassal" French Grape Germplasm Repository, using 14 microsatellite markers. In the context of the comparative analysis, twenty-four synonyms/counterparts and the putative parents for twelve Balkan accessions were identified. We discovered five pairs of homonyms, subsequently confirming the identity or parentage of three of them. Some of the examined accessions were identified either on the basis of the genotypes found in the literature, or through parentage relationships revealed in this study. For the remaining fifty accessions we were unable to establish either their pedigree or to identify them on the basis of SSR profiles available elsewhere. Finally, the Balkan genotypes that were not well classified by synonymy or parentage analysis were further studied with a Principal Coordinate Analysis to reveal genetic clustering within larger datasets of genotypes. The graphical display of the individual and group distances showed that about forty accessions (85 %) are structured within a group of Balkan and Eastern Europe genotypes and only a minor proportion resulted in admixed population assignment

    Previous work at 6/g2=5.76/g^2=5.7 with quenched staggered quarks is extended with new calculations at 5.85 and 6.15 on lattices up to 323×6432^3\times 64. These calculations allow a more detailed study of extrapolation in quark mass, finite volume and lattice spacing than has heretofore been possible.     Lattice QCD at finite isospin density at zero and finite temperature

    We simulate lattice QCD with dynamical uu and dd quarks at finite chemical potential, μI\mu_I, for the third component of isospin (I3I_3), at both zero and at finite temperature. At zero temperature there is some μI\mu_I, μc\mu_c say, above which I3I_3 and parity are spontaneously broken by a charged pion condensate. This is in qualitative agreement with the prediction of effective (chiral) Lagrangians which also predict μc=mπ\mu_c=m_\pi. This transition appears to be second order, with scaling properties consistent with the mean-field predictions of such effective Lagrangian models. We have also studied the restoration of I3I_3 symmetry at high temperature for μI>μc\mu_I > \mu_c. For μI\mu_I sufficiently large, this finite temperature phase transition appears to be first order. As μI\mu_I is decreased it becomes second order connecting continuously with the zero temperature transition.Comment: 23 pages, Revtex, 9 figures.     Performance testing of two new one-step real time PCR assays for detection of human influenza and avian influenza viruses isolated in humans and Respiratory Syncytial Virus

    Introduction and Methods. Two real time one-step RT-PCRassays were developed for simultaneous detection and typingof influenza A and B viruses and detection of Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). As regard influenza, primers were designedto amplify specific sequences of gene M of A/H1N1, A/H3N2,A/H5N1, A/H7N7 and A/H9N2 viruses and of gene NP of typeB viruses belonging both Yamagata and Victoria lineage. Specificity, analytical and clinical sensitivity, dynamic range, linearity of the new assays were evaluated.Results. Dynamic ranges for Influenza A and B, and RSV,were at least five logs and linearity was conserved. In orderto evaluate the specificity, 80 nasopharyngeal swabs resulting Influenza and RSV negative by multiplex nested PCR andcell culture, were tested and 79 resulted negative. The detection limits for influenza A and B, calculated by 95% probit,was 0,008 and 0,09 PFU, respectively, resulting more sensible than nested PCR. A total of 75 specimens (10 A/H1N1,
