Background: Pubic diastasis often results in anteroposterior compression (APC) injuries based on Young and Burgess classification. It is caused due to high-energy trauma and of much clinical importance is given when coexists with urogenital and neurological complications with hemodynamic instability. Open reduction and internal fixation with plating facilitates early mobilisation with better results and is the preferable mode of stabilisation. We evaluated the clinical and functional outcome of such patients in a one-year follow-up period. Methods: In our study, we included 20 patients with APC II injuries who underwent an open reduction by single or dual plating technique by the Pfannenstiel approach, were followed for one year. Results: Among 20 patients, 14 patients (70%) were operated with single superior plating, six patients (30%) were performed with dual plating, i.e., both superior and anterior plating. Among 20 patients, two patients (10%) were operated for primary arthrodesis with double plating. Only one among 20 (5%) had implant failure due to early weight bearing and were re-operated with primary arthrodesis with plating. Results were analysed based on a scoring system which includes five criteria such as anterior pelvic pain, dyspareunia and sexual dysfunction, ability to sit, gait abnormalities and walking distance. Among 20 patients ten patients (50%) had excellent results, six patients (30%) had good results, two patients (10%) had fair results, two patients (10%) had poor results. Conclusions: Open reduction and internal fixation of traumatic pubic diastasis in type II APC injuries with single or dual plating had given better results and early functional recovery

Strategic orientation, strategic renewal, and the international performance of born global firms

The international business environment is both dynamic and turbulent. Accordingly, a new venture’s strategic orientation (SO) and ability to undertake strategic renewal (SR) are of great importance to its survival, growth and international performance. Building on the dynamic capability perspective, we explore how SR capability mediates the relationship between SO and the performance of mature born global firms (BGFs). In particular, we examine the direct and indirect interplay between the SO of BGFs and their performance outcomes. We use a sample of 195 export-oriented BGFs, derived from the Bangladeshi apparel industry. We use a hierarchical regression analysis technique to test the direct effects. The mediation effect is examined using three statistical tests – Baron and Kenney’s (1986) causal steps approach, the Sobel test, and the Hayes indirect effect with bootstrapping method – to ensure the validity and reliability of our findings. The results reveal a positive association between SO and the performance of BGFs, and that this relationship is mediated by the firms’ SR capability. We contribute to a greater understanding of the drivers of mature BGFs’ international performance by demonstrating a direct link between their SO and SR capability, which in turn affects their performance outcomes

Power Quality Improvement Based On PSO Algorithm Incorporating UPQC

The usage of the term power quality is increasing day by day with extensive usage of large capacity loads and nonlinear loads. The major power quality issues are voltage disturbances and current disturbances in the present-day power systems. Today, with the advent of power semiconductor devices these power quality issues are solved to a great extent. The unified power quality conditioner is one such power semiconductor device which utilizes active filtering methodology to deal with the concerned power quality issues. Here an attempt is made to control and generate the reference currents and voltages for a unified power quality conditioner with the optimal tuned synchronous reference frame theory. The particle swarm optimization is employed to evolve gains of the proportional-integral controller. The unified power quality conditioner is a combination of shunt and series voltage source converters. The hysteresis band current controller for series and the pulse width modulation current controller for the shunt active filter are used for generation of gating pulses required by the switches of the voltage source converters in the unified power quality conditioner. The performance evaluation of multi-objective convergence fitness function (dealing: the voltage sag, the source current variations, and the load voltage variations) with unified power quality conditioner based on particle swarm optimization algorithm is performed. The efficacy of the proposed work is validated by conducting simulations in MATLAB/SIMULINK software environment.

Taylor line swimming in microchannels and cubic lattices of obstacles

Microorganisms naturally move in microstructured fluids. Using the simulation method of multi-particle collision dynamics, we study in two dimensions an undulatory Taylor line swimming in a microchannel and in a cubic lattice of obstacles, which represent simple forms of a microstructured environment. In the microchannel the Taylor line swims at an acute angle along a channel wall with a clearly enhanced swimming speed due to hydrodynamic interactions with the bounding wall. While in a dilute obstacle lattice swimming speed is also enhanced, a dense obstacle lattice gives rise to geometric swimming. This new type of swimming is characterized by a drastically increased swimming speed. Since the Taylor line has to fit into the free space of the obstacle lattice, the swimming speed is close to the phase velocity of the bending wave traveling along the Taylor line. While adjusting its swimming motion within the lattice, the Taylor line chooses a specific swimming direction, which we classify by a lattice vector. When plotting the swimming velocity versus the magnitude of the lattice vector, all our data collapse on a single master curve. Finally, we also report more complex trajectories within the obstacle lattice.DFG, GRK 1558, Kollektive Dynamik im Nichtgleichgewicht: in kondensierter Materie und biologischen SystemenDFG, SPP 1726, Mikroschwimmer - Von Einzelpartikelbewegung zu kollektivem Verhalte

Influence of gas flow rate on liquid distribution in trickle-beds using perforated plates as liquid distributors

Two wire mesh tomography devices and a liquid collector were used to study the influence of the gas flow rate on liquid distribution when fluids distribution on top of the reactor is ensured by a perforated plate. In opposition to most of the studies realized by other authors, conditions in which the gas has a negative impact in liquid distribution were evidenced. Indeed, the obtained results show that the influence of gas flow rate depends on the quality of the initial distribution, as the gas forces the liquid to "respect" the distribution imposed at the top of the reactor. Finally, a comparison between the two measuring techniques shows the limitations of the liquid collector and the improper conclusions to which its use could lead

Hierarchy and Feedback in the Evolution of the E. coli Transcription Network

The E.coli transcription network has an essentially feedforward structure, with, however, abundant feedback at the level of self-regulations. Here, we investigate how these properties emerged during evolution. An assessment of the role of gene duplication based on protein domain architecture shows that (i) transcriptional autoregulators have mostly arisen through duplication, while (ii) the expected feedback loops stemming from their initial cross-regulation are strongly selected against. This requires a divergent coevolution of the transcription factor DNA-binding sites and their respective DNA cis-regulatory regions. Moreover, we find that the network tends to grow by expansion of the existing hierarchical layers of computation, rather than by addition of new layers. We also argue that rewiring of regulatory links due to mutation/selection of novel transcription factor/DNA binding interactions appears not to significantly affect the network global hierarchy, and that horizontally transferred genes are mainly added at the bottom, as new target nodes. These findings highlight the important evolutionary roles of both duplication and selective deletion of crosstalks between autoregulators in the emergence of the hierarchical transcription network of E.coli.Comment: to appear in PNA

Eliminating the d=5 proton decay operators from SUSY GUTs

    Get PDF
A general analysis is made of the question whether the d=5 proton decay operators coming from exchange of colored Higgsinos can be completely eliminated in a natural way in supersymmetric grand unified models. It is shown that they can indeed be in SO(10) while at the same time naturally solving the doublet-triplet splitting problem, having only two light Higgs doublets, and using no more than a single adjoint Higgs field. Accomplishing all of this requires that the vacuum expectation value of the adjoint Higgs field be proportional to the generator I_{3R} rather than to B-L, as is usually assumed. It is shown that such models can give realistic quark and lepton masses. We also point out a new mechanism for solving the \mu problem in the context of SO(10) SUSY GUTs.Comment: 24 pages in LaTeX, with 3 figure

Background: We evaluated the clinical and functional outcome of intra-articular calcaneal fractures treated with pre-contoured plating. The functional outcome was measured by the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) scoring system. Methods: Twenty-five adult patients with displaced intra-articular calcaneus fractures, treated with by open reduction and internal fixation using pre-contoured plates, and those who were available for follow up were evaluated for the outcomes such as operative procedure, anatomical reduction, postoperative hospital stays early mobilization and functional outcome postoperatively. Follow-up was at three, six and twelve months radiological and clinical union were also considered. Results: Twenty-five adult patients presented with calcaneal fractures were operated during the study period. The mean time for union of fracture was 12.5±1.8 weeks. When we assessed the functional outcome in those patients who had radiological and clinical union using AOFAS score, we found that 16 out of 23 (64%) had good results with mean AOFAS score of 83.5±2.0 and 7/25 (28%) had fair results with mean score of 73.3±1.3, and 2/25 (8%) had poor results with mean score of 54.0±8.5. In 2 out of 16 (12.5%) patients, with good AOFAS scores, implants were removed after one and a half year from the day of surgery after confirming complete union of the fracture. Conclusions: We believe that pre-contoured reconstruction plate fixation for displaced intraarticular calcaneus fracture is excellent in terms of the union of the fracture, attaining anatomical reduction. It gives better outcomes concerning the function and range of movements

Lepton Flavor Violation and the Origin of the Seesaw Mechanism

The right--handed neutrino mass matrix that is central to the understanding of small neutrino masses via the seesaw mechanism can arise either (i) from renormalizable operators or (ii) from nonrenormalizable or super-renormalizable operators, depending on the symmetries and the Higgs content of the theory beyond the Standard Model. In this paper, we study lepton flavor violating (LFV) effects in the first class of seesaw models wherein the \nu_R Majorana masses arise from renormalizable Yukawa couplings involving a B-L = 2 Higgs field. We present detailed predictions for \tau -> \mu + \gamma and \mu -> e + \gamma branching ratios in these models taking the current neutrino oscillation data into account. Focusing on minimal supergravity models, we find that for a large range of MSSM parameters suggested by the relic abundance of neutralino dark matter and that is consistent with Higgs boson mass and other constraints, these radiative decays are in the range accessible to planned experiments. We compare these predictions with lepton flavor violation in the second class of models arising entirely from the Dirac Yukawa couplings. We study the dependence of the ratio r \equiv B(\mu -> e+\gamma)/B(\tau ->\mu +\gamma) on the MSSM parameters and show that measurement of r can provide crucial insight into the origin of the seesaw mechanism.Comment: 20 pages, Revtex, 7 figure
