In-sewer field-evaluation of an optical fibre-based condition monitoring system
A Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) based monitoring system for continuous humidity and temperature measurement has been designed and evaluated experimentally in a sewer environment with high corrosion rates, humidity and the presence of gaseous hydrogen sulfide. The monitoring system has been designed specifically for field use, including packaging prepared for the harsh environment and the challenges of the operation. The system is battery powered and has hardware for controlling the interrogation equipment, power management, data logging and 4G connectivity. Results obtained show the long-term performance, over a 6-month period of non-stop monitoring of real-time data using the same probe. The data acquired was compared to the environmental data of temperature and precipitation for this period from the same location, which showed a good correlation between the expected and the measured data values. The data obtained point to the success of the optical fibre-based sensor system for monitoring in these harsh environments over long periods
DNA loop statistics and torsional modulus
The modelling of DNA mechanics under external constraints is discussed. Two
analytical models are widely known, but disagree for instance on the value of
the torsional modulus. The origin of this embarassing situation is located in
the concept of writhe. This letter presents a unified model for DNA
establishing a relation between the different approaches. I show that the
writhe created by the loops of DNA is at the origin of the discrepancy. To take
this into account, I propose a new treatment of loop statistics based on
numerical simulations using the most general formula for the writhe, and on
analytic calculations with only one fit parameter. One can then compute the
value of the torsional modulus of DNA without the need of any cut-off.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure. Accepted by Europhysics Letter
Identification of new transitional disk candidates in Lupus with Herschel
New data from the Herschel Space Observatory are broadening our understanding
of the physics and evolution of the outer regions of protoplanetary disks in
star forming regions. In particular they prove to be useful to identify
transitional disk candidates. The goals of this work are to complement the
detections of disks and the identification of transitional disk candidates in
the Lupus clouds with data from the Herschel Gould Belt Survey. We extracted
photometry at 70, 100, 160, 250, 350 and 500 m of all spectroscopically
confirmed Class II members previously identified in the Lupus regions and
analyzed their updated spectral energy distributions. We have detected 34 young
disks in Lupus in at least one Herschel band, from an initial sample of 123
known members in the observed fields. Using the criteria defined in Ribas et
al. (2013) we have identified five transitional disk candidates in the region.
Three of them are new to the literature. Their PACS-70 m fluxes are
systematically higher than those of normal T Tauri stars in the same
associations, as already found in T Cha and in the transitional disks in the
Chamaeleon molecular cloud. Herschel efficiently complements mid-infrared
surveys for identifying transitional disk candidates and confirms that these
objects seem to have substantially different outer disks than the T Tauri stars

Thermodynamics of a Colloidal Particle in a Time-Dependent Non-Harmonic Potential
We study the motion of an overdamped colloidal particle in a time-dependent
non-harmonic potential. We demonstrate the first law-like balance between
applied work, exchanged heat, and internal energy on the level of a single
trajectory. The observed distribution of applied work is distinctly
non-Gaussian in good agreement with numerical calculations. Both the Jarzynski
relation and a detailed fluctuation theorem are verified with good accuracy
Non-equilibrium Lorentz gas on a curved space
The periodic Lorentz gas with external field and iso-kinetic thermostat is
equivalent, by conformal transformation, to a billiard with expanding
phase-space and slightly distorted scatterers, for which the trajectories are
straight lines. A further time rescaling allows to keep the speed constant in
that new geometry. In the hyperbolic regime, the stationary state of this
billiard is characterized by a phase-space contraction rate, equal to that of
the iso-kinetic Lorentz gas. In contrast to the iso-kinetic Lorentz gas where
phase-space contraction occurs in the bulk, the phase-space contraction rate
here takes place at the periodic boundaries

In this study, we compared demographic responses of Eschscholzia californica populations located at different altitude,under the basic assumption that altitudinal gradients impose environmental limitation to the spread at the upper edge of thegradient. We detected significant differences among populations either in terms of life history attributes and the finite rateof increase. In general, coastal population expressed higher finite population rates than mountain populations, althoughthese differences were not statistically significant. Mountain populations (Corral Quemado and Farellones) expressed afinite population rate not significant different of 1. These result suggest that at the upper front of invasion the species is in ademographic equilibrium because in spite of we detected a higher plant fecundity, there exist ecological constraints a seedstage level. We proposed to address more specific studies assessing from one hand, seed movement from lower altitudesand the efficiency of domestic cattle as biotic vector; we also propose to examine the feasibility of this species to establishpositive interactions with cushion plants, and therefore to expand its geographic range due to this facilitation effect.En este estudio comparamos las respuestas demográficas de las poblaciones de Eschscholzia californica ubicadas adiferentes altitudes, bajo el supuesto básico de que los gradientes altitudinales imponen limitaciones a la invasión. Sedetectaron diferencias significativas entre las poblaciones, ya sea en términos de atributos de la historia de vida y tasafinita de crecimiento. En general, las poblaciones costeras expresaron mayores tasas de crecimiento que las poblacionesde montaña, aun cuando éstas no fueron estadísticamente significativas. Las poblaciones de montaña (Corral Quemadoy Farellones) fueron las únicas que mostraron una tasa de crecimiento similar a 1. Estos resultados sugieren que laspoblaciones ubicadas en el frente superior de invasión estarían en un equilibrio demográfico debido a que aun cuandose detectó una elevada fecundidad, existen restricciones ecológicas a nivel de las semillas. Proponemos hacer estudiosmás específicos para evaluar un posible movimiento de semillas desde altitudes más bajas y la eficiencia del ganadodoméstico como vector transportador de estas semillas; proponemos también examinar la posibilidad que tiene esta plantade establecer interacciones positivas con las plantas en cojín, ubicadas a mayores alturas y, por lo tanto, ampliar su rangoaltitudinal debido a este efecto de facilitación
Force dependent fragility in RNA hairpins
We apply Kramers theory to investigate the dissociation of multiple bonds
under mechanical force and interpret experimental results for the
unfolding/refolding force distributions of an RNA hairpin pulled at different
loading rates using laser tweezers. We identify two different kinetic regimes
depending on the range of forces explored during the unfolding and refolding
process. The present approach extends the range of validity of the two-states
approximation by providing a theoretical framework to reconstruct free-energy
landscapes and identify force-induced structural changes in molecular
transition states using single molecule pulling experiments. The method should
be applicable to RNA hairpins with multiple kinetic barriers.Comment: Latex file, 4 pages+3 figure
Trace element analysis reveals bioaccumulation in the squid Gonatus fabricii from polar regions of the Atlantic Ocean
The boreoatlantic gonate squid (Gonatus fabricii) represents important prey for top predators—such as marine mammals, seabirds and fish—and is also an efficient predator of crustaceans and fish. Gonatus fabricii is the most abundant cephalopod in the northern Atlantic and Arctic Ocean but the trace element accumulation of this ecologically important species is unknown. In this study, trace element concentrations (Ag, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Se, and Zn) were analysed from the mantle muscle and the digestive gland tissue of juveniles, adult females, and adult males that were captured south of Disko Island off West-Greenland. To assess the feeding habitat and trophic position of this species, stable isotopes of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) were measured in their muscle tissue. Mercury concentrations were positively correlated with size (mantle length) and trophic position. The Hg/Se ratio was assessed because Se has been suggested to play a protective role against Hg toxicity and showed a molar surplus of Se relative to Hg. Cadmium concentrations in the digestive gland were negatively correlated with size and trophic position (δ15N), which suggested a dietary shift from Cd-rich crustaceans towards Cd-poor fish during ontogeny. This study provides trace element concentration data for G. fabricii from Greenlandic waters, which represents baseline data for a northern cephalopod species. Within West-Greenland waters, G. fabricii appears to be an important vector for the transfer of Cd in the Arctic pelagic food web
Mesonephric-like adenocarcinoma of the ovary with co-existent endometriosis: A case report and review of the literature
© 2020 The Authors Introduction: Mesonephric-like adenocarcinoma (MLA) is a rare malignant gynecologic neoplasm occurring in the uterine corpus and ovary. The morphological and immunohistochemical characteristics of MLA closely resemble that of cervical mesonephric adenocarcinomas, but whether they share a common histogenesis remains unclear. Two main theories for histogenesis of MLAs include the origination of these neoplasms from mesonephric remnants, as is the case for cervical mesonephric adenocarcinoma, versus the differentiation along a mesonephric pathway from Mullerian lesions. Case: A 67-year-old presented after a right salpingo-oophorectomy for a complex ovarian mass revealed a mesonephric-like adenocarcinoma of the ovary and endometriosis. She underwent a total abdominal hysterectomy, pelvic lymphadenectomy, and infra-colic omentectomy, and diagnosed with Stage IA mesonephric-like adenocarcinoma of the ovary. At 18 months post-operatively, the patient developed flank and abdominal pain and was found to have multiple sites of recurrent disease. She was referred to medical oncology for chemotherapy as she was not a candidate for surgical cytoreduction. Discussion: This case demonstrates the aggressive nature of ovarian MLA and the need for a multidisciplinary approach when determining the treatment. In addition, this case provides further evidence to support the theory that at least a subset of MLAs arises from a Mullerian lesion which then differentiates down a mesonephric pathway
