    Newton-Raphson Solution of Nonlinear Delay-Free Loop Filter Networks

    For their numerical properties and speed of convergence, Newton-Raphson methods are frequently used to compute nonlinear audio electronic circuit models in the digital domain. These methods are traditionally employed regardless of preliminary considerations about their applicability, primarily because of a lack of flexible mathematical tools making the convergence analysis an easy task. We define the basin delimiter, a tool that can be applied to the case when the nonlinear circuit is modeled by a delay-free loop network. This tool is derived from a known convergence theorem providing a sufficient condition for quadratic speed of convergence of the method. After substituting the nonlinear characteristics with equivalent linear filters that compute Newton-Raphson on the existing network, through the basin delimiter, we figure out constraints guaranteeing quadratic convergence speed in the diode clipper. Further application to a ring modulator circuit does not lead to comparably useful constraints for quadratic convergence; however, also in this circuit, the basin delimiter has a magnitude roughly proportional to the number of iterations needed by the solver to find a solution. Together, such case studies foster refinement and generalization of this tool as a speed predictor, with potential application to the design of virtual analogue systems for real-time digital audio effects

    The accretion environment of Supergiant Fast X-ray Transients probed with XMM-Newton

    Supergiant fast X-ray transients (SFXTs) are characterized by a remarkable variability in the X-ray domain, widely ascribed to the accretion from a clumpy stellar wind. In this paper we performed a systematic and homogeneous analysis of sufficiently bright X-ray flares from the SFXTs observed with XMM-Newton to probe spectral variations on timescales as short as a few hundred of seconds. Our ultimate goal is to investigate if SFXT flares and outbursts are triggered by the presence of clumps and eventually reveal whether strongly or mildly dense clumps are required. For all sources, we employ a technique developed by our group, making use of an adaptive rebinned hardness ratio to optimally select the time intervals for the spectral extraction. A total of twelve observations performed in the direction of five SFXTs are reported. We show that both strongly and mildly dense clumps can trigger these events. In the former case, the local absorption column density may increase by a factor of >>3, while in the latter case, the increase is only by a factor of 2-3 (or lower). Overall, there seems to be no obvious correlation between the dynamic ranges in the X-ray fluxes and absorption column densities in SFXTs, with an indication that lower densities are recorded at the highest fluxes. This can be explained by the presence of accretion inhibition mechanism(s). We propose a classification of the flares/outbursts from these sources to drive future observational investigations. We suggest that the difference between the classes of flares/outbursts is related to the fact that the mechanism(s) inhibiting accretion can be overcome more easily in some sources compared to others. We also investigate the possibility that different stellar wind structures, rather than clumps, could provide the means to temporarily overcome the inhibition of accretion in SFXTs.Comment: Accepted for publication on A&

    Determination of the forward slope in p pp~p and pˉ p\bar p~p elastic scattering up to LHC energy

    In the analysis of experimental data on ppp p (or pˉp\bar p p) elastic differential cross section it is customary to define an average forward slope bb in the form exp(bt)\exp{(-b|t|)}, where tt is the momentum transfer. Taking as working example the results of experiments at Tevatron and SPS, we will show with the help of the impact picture approach, that this simplifying assumption hides interesting information on the complex non-flip scattering amplitude, and that the slope bb is not a constant. We investigate the variation of this slope parameter, including a model-independent way to extract this information from an accurate measurement of the elastic differential cross section. An extension of our results to the LHC energy domain is presented in view of future experiments.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, to appear in EPJ

    Probing large-scale wind structures in Vela X-1 using off-states with INTEGRAL

    Vela X-1 is the prototype of the class of wind-fed accreting pulsars in high mass X-ray binaries hosting a supergiant donor. We have analyzed in a systematic way ten years of INTEGRAL data of Vela X-1 (22-50 keV) and we found that when outside the X-ray eclipse, the source undergoes several luminosity drops where the hard X-rays luminosity goes below 3x10^35 erg/s, becoming undetected by INTEGRAL. These drops in the X-ray flux are usually referred to as "off-states" in the literature. We have investigated the distribution of these off-states along the Vela X-1 ~8.9 d orbit, finding that their orbital occurrence displays an asymmetric distribution, with a higher probability to observe an off-state near the pre-eclipse than during the post-eclipse. This asymmetry can be explained by scattering of hard X-rays in a region of ionized wind, able to reduce the source hard X-ray brightness preferentially near eclipse ingress. We associate this ionized large-scale wind structure with the photoionization wake produced by the interaction of the supergiant wind with the X-ray emission from the neutron star. We emphasize that this observational result could be obtained thanks to the accumulation of a decade of INTEGRAL data, with observations covering the whole orbit several times, allowing us to detect an asymmetric pattern in the orbital distribution of off-states in Vela X-1.Comment: Accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society (5 pages, 3 figures).     The first outburst of the black hole candidate MAXI J1836-194 observed by INTEGRAL, Swift, and RXTE

    MAXI J1836-194 is a transient black-hole candidate discovered in outburst by MAXI on 30 August 2011. We report on the available INTEGRAL, Swift, and RXTE observations performed in the direction of the source during this event before 55 864 MJD. Combining the broad band (0.6-200 keV) spectral and timing information obtained from these data with the results of radio observations, we show that the event displayed by MAXI J1836-194 is another example of "failed" outburst. During the first ~20 days after the onset of the event, the source underwent a transition from the canonical low/hard to the hard intermediate state, while reaching the highest X-ray flux. In the ~40 days following the peak of the outburst, the source displayed a progressive spectral hardening and a decrease of the X-ray flux, thus it entered again the low/hard state and began its return to quiescence.Comment: Accepted for A&A Letters on 22 Dec. 201

    A high-resolution aeromagnetic field test in Friuli: towards developing remote location of buried ferro-metallic bodies

    High Resolution AeroMagnetic surveys (HRAM) are a novel tool experimented in several countries for volcano and earthquake hazard re-assessment, ground water exploration and mitigation, hazardous waste site characterization and accurate location of buried ferrous objects (drums, UXO, pipelines). The improvements achieved by HRAM stem from lower terrain clearance coupled with accurately positioned, real-time differential navigation on closely spaced flight grids. In field cultural noise filtering, advanced data processing, imaging and improved interpretation techniques enhance data information content. Development of HRAM approaches might also contribute to mitigate environmental hazards present throughout the Italian territory. Hence an HRAM field test was performed in July 2000 in Friuli, North-Eastern Italy to assess the capabilities and limitations of HRAM over a buried pipeline and a domestic waste site. A Cesium magnetometer in towed bird configuration was used on two separate grids. Profile line spacing was 50-100 m and bird nominal ground clearance was set to 50 m. Microlevelled total field magnetic anomaly data forms the basis for subsequent advanced processing products including 3D analytic signal, maximum horizontal gradient of pseudo-gravity and 3D Euler Deconvolution. The magnetic signatures we detected and enhanced over the environmental test site area in Friuli are also compared with similar but more extensive HRAM signatures recently observed in other countries

    The supergiant fast X-ray transient IGRJ18483-0311 in quiescence: XMM-Newton, Swift, and Chandra observations

    IGR J18483-0311 was discovered with INTEGRAL in 2003 and later classified as a supergiant fast X-ray transient. It was observed in outburst many times, but its quiescent state is still poorly known. Here we present the results of XMM-Newton, Swift, and Chandra observations of IGRJ18483-0311. These data improved the X-ray position of the source, and provided new information on the timing and spectral properties of IGR J18483-0311 in quiescence. We report the detection of pulsations in the quiescent X-ray emission of this source, and give for the first time a measurement of the spin-period derivative of this source. In IGRJ18483-0311 the measured spin-period derivative of -(1.3+-0.3)x10^(-9) s/s likely results from light travel time effects in the binary. We compare the most recent observational results of IGRJ18483-0311 and SAXJ1818.6-1703, the two supergiant fast X-ray transients for which a similar orbital period has been measured.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA

    Community preferences in support of a conservation programme for olive landraces in the Mediterranean area

    This study focused on the willingness of the Apulian community in Italy to pay for olive landraces in a conservation programme. A choice experiment approach through a latent class model was carried out in order to investigate different characteristics of people that could increase the effectiveness and efficiency of conservation policies by decision-makers. The analysis allowed us to identify three groups of families, each with very different socioeconomic characteristics. Policy implications suggest the need to develop a better knowledge system on the benefits of olive landraces and to implement suitable strategies for better placement of local products in the market

Two classes of Prospective Primary Teachers (PPTs) at the Universities of Udine and Verona were introduced to the theme of Time in a formative intervention organized into a) the discussion of various educational and multidisciplinary approaches aimed to deal with different aspects of Time and b) the exploration/experimentation of various instruments for time measurement.
