    Accurate analytical approximation of asteroid deflection with constant tangential thrust

    We present analytical formulas to estimate the variation of achieved deflection for an Earth-impacting asteroid following a continuous tangential low-thrust deflection strategy. Relatively simple analytical expressions are obtained with the aid of asymptotic theory and the use of Peláez orbital elements set, an approach that is particularly suitable to the asteroid deflection problem and is not limited to small eccentricities. The accuracy of the proposed formulas is evaluated numerically showing negligible error for both early and late deflection campaigns. The results will be of aid in planning future low-thrust asteroid deflection mission

    Three-Body Dynamics and Self-Powering of an Electrodynamic Tether in a Plasmasphere

    The dynamics of an electrodynamic tether in a three-body gravitational environment are investigated. In the classical two-body scenario the extraction of power is at the expense of orbital kinetic energy. As a result of power extraction, an electrodynamic tether satellite system loses altitude and deorbits. This concept has been proposed and well investigated in the past, for example for orbital debris mitigation and spent stages reentry. On the other hand, in the three-body scenario an electrodynamic tether can be placed in an equilibrium position fixed with respect to the two primary bodies without deorbiting, and at the same time generate power for onboard use. The appearance of new equilibrium positions in the perturbed three-body problem allow this to happen as the electrical power is extracted at the expenses of the plasma corotating with the primary body. Fundamental differences between the classical twobody dynamics and the new phenomena appearing in the circular restricted three-body problem perturbed by the electrodynamic force of the electrodynamic tether are shown in the paper. An interesting application of an electrodynamic tether placed in the Jupiter plasma torus is then considered, in which the electrodynamic tether generates useful electrical power of about 1 kW with a 20-km-long electrodynamic tether from the environmental plasma without losing orbital energy

    The low-energy limit of AdS(3)/CFT2 and its TBA

    We investigate low-energy string excitations in AdS3 × S3 × T4. When the worldsheet is decompactified, the theory has gapless modes whose spectrum at low energies is determined by massless relativistic integrable S matrices of the type introduced by Al. B. Zamolodchikov. The S matrices are non-trivial only for excitations with identical worldsheet chirality, indicating that the low-energy theory is a CFT2. We construct a Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz (TBA) for these excitations and show how the massless modes’ wrapping effects may be incorporated into the AdS3 spectral problem. Using the TBA and its associated Y-system, we determine the central charge of the low-energy CFT2 to be c = 6 from calculating the vacuum energy for antiperiodic fermions — with the vacuum energy being zero for periodic fermions in agreement with a supersymmetric theory — and find the energies of some excited states

    Dietary sodium chloride effect in Nile tilapia fed with fish meal-free diets

    Aim of study: To evaluate the effect of the dietary NaCl level for Nile tilapia fingerlings.Area of study: Palotina sector of Federal University of Paraná, in southern Brazil.Material and methods: An experiment was carried using 750 Nile tilapia fingerlings (4.61 ± 0.09 g) distributed in 30 1,000-L circular tanks in a completely randomized design with six treatments and five replicates. NaCl was added to extruded fish meal-free diets at 0.0, 2.5, 5.0, 7.5, 10.0 and 12.5 (g/kg). After the experimental period, fish were submitted to a 24 h-fast and weighed. All data were submitted to an analysis of variance and Tukey’s test followed by Levene’s test and regression test, using the Statistica 7.0® software package.Main results: Fish fed the NaCl-free diet presented better growth performance (p<0.05) compared to the other diets. Linear decrease effects on final weight (y = 50.1754 – 0.1672x, r2 = 0.6984), specific growth rate (y = 45.5418 – 0.1688x, r² = 0.6966), weight gain (y = 4.9465 – 0.008x; r² = 0.6886) and apparent feed conversion (y = 0.7113 + 0.0043x; r² = 0.7655) were noted. Efficiency and apparent protein retention were better in the NaCl-free diet (p<0.05). Significant differences (p<0.05) were observed for fillet fat and crude protein content. Increasing NaCl levels led to significant decreases (p<0.05) in Nile tilapia fingerling protein efficiency rates (y = 3.7804 - 0.0116x; r² = 0.6549).Research highlights: Thus, NaCl should not be included in fish meal-free diets for Nile tilapia fingerlings

    Antitumour activity of novel taxanes that act at the same time as cytotoxic agents and P-glycoprotein inhibitors

    Taxanes antitumour agents such as paclitaxel and docetaxel represent a successful family of chemotherapeutic drugs. Unfortunately, acquired and innate resistance represents a clinical problem for these drugs. We investigated, on a panel of 7 human cancer cell lines, the growth inhibition effect of 3 newly developed taxanes (SB-T-1213, SB-T-1250 and SB-T-101187) with modification at the C10 and C3′ positions of the taxane framework. These positions have been previously characterized as critical to make taxanes highly active against cells overexpressing the efflux pump P-glycoprotein (P-gp). Paclitaxel and docetaxel were used as reference compounds. Results unambiguously indicate the exceptional activity of the novel taxanes toward P-gp positive cells (up to >400 fold higher potency than that of paclitaxel). SB-T-1213 and SB-T-1250 are also substantially more active than the reference compounds against P-gp negative cells. To better understand the mechanisms underlying the enhanced activity of the newly developed taxanes, we performed cell cycle and apoptosis analysis. This study demonstrates that the striking growth inhibition effect exhibited by the novel taxanes is ascribed to their increased ability in inducing apoptosis and G 2/M cell cycle block. SB-T-1213 and SB-T-1250 are also more active than reference compounds in inducing intracellular accumulation of the beta-tubulin subunits. Finally, it is revealed that these novel taxanes have ability to inhibit the function of the P-gp efflux pump on the basis of the Rhodamine 123 assay. These findings strongly suggest that SB-T-1213, SB-T-1250 and SB-T-101187 represent a new tool to overcome innate or acquired P-gp mediated taxane-resistance. © 2000 Cancer Research Campaign http://www.bjcancer.co

    Energy-Spin Trajectories in AdS_5 x S^5 from Semiclassical Vertex Operators

    We study the relation between vertex operators in AdS_5 x S^5 and classical spinning string solutions. In the limit of large quantum numbers the treatment of vertex operators becomes semiclassical. In this regime, a given vertex operator carrying a certain set of quantum numbers defines a singular solution. We show in a number of examples that this solution coincides with the classical string solution with the same quantum numbers but written in a different two-dimensional coordinate system. The marginality condition imposed on an operator yields a relation between the energy and the other quantum numbers which is shown to coincide with that of the corresponding classical string solution. We also argue that in some cases vertex operators in AdS_5 x S^5 cannot be given by expressions similar to the ones in flat space and a more involved consideration is required.Comment: 23 pages, 1 Figur

    TEPEE/GReAT (General Relativity Accuracy Test in an Einstein Elevator): Ready to start

    TEPEE/GReAT is an experiment aimed at testing the principle of equivalence at a level of accuracy equal to 5 parts in 1015 by means of a differential acceleration detector free falling inside a co-moving, cryogenic, evacuated capsule, released from a stratospheric balloon. The detector is spun about a horizontal axis during the fall in order to modulate the equivalence principle violation signal at the spin frequency. Thanks to the recent funding of the Italian side, the project is ready to enter its second phase. The main activities related to detector prototype (both non-cryogenic and cryogenic versions) development and testing, free-fall tests, signal extraction from noise (in particular related to the common-mode rejection factor) and flight model requirements are discussed

    Rapid laser-induced low temperature crystallization of thermochromic VO2 sol-gel thin films

    The thermochromic properties of vanadium dioxide (VO2) offer great advantages for energy-saving smart windows, memory devices, and transistors. However, the crystallization of solution-based thin films at temperatures lower than 400°C remains a challenge. Photonic annealing has recently been exploited to crystallize metal oxides, with minimal thermal damage to the substrate and reduced manufacturing time. Here, VO2 thin films, obtained via a green sol–gel process, were crystallized by pulsed excimer laser annealing. The influence of increasing laser fluence and pulse number on the film properties was systematically studied through optical, structural, morphological, and chemical characterizations. From temperature profile simulations, the temperature rise was confirmed to be confined within the film during the laser pulses, with negligible substrate heating. Threshold laser parameters to induce VO2 crystallization without surface melting were found. With respect to furnace annealing, both the crystallization temperature and the annealing time were substantially reduced, with VO2 crystallization being achieved within only 60 s of laser exposure. The laser processing was performed at room temperature in air, without the need of a controlled atmosphere. The thermochromic properties of the lasered thin films were comparable with the reference furnace-treated samples
