The construction of culture undergoes a number of cultural influences. Cultural dynamics disavows alleged ethnocentric positions. From the beginning, Brazilian history has been linked to various socio-cultural systems. In the last two centuries, an intense incorporation of French and Anglo-Saxon cultures has been added to the Iberian, African and Native influences. Together, these have molded, to a large extent, our hearts and minds. This paper focuses on the influence of French culture and French conservative Catholicism in the constitution of Brazilian anti-semitism. The analisys of religious iconography reveals one of the sources of the satanization of the Jews in popular and elite imagination. The development of the social exclusion of the French Jews and their deportation to the concentration camps is analysed in the context of a tour around the Marais, the jewish district in Paris. Corbusier's concentrationist architecture completes the social exclusion picture. All of these elements together allow us to understand, to a certain extent, how the image of the immigrant Jew was built and seen by various authors. A dinâmica cultural desmente pretensas posições etnocêntricas.

UNLIKE numerous existing studies of excellent quality, this survey attempts to investigate not only domestic violence, as it is known, but also the various types of homicide - attempted or consummated - committed against women from all age groups. We investigated and endeavored to compare how this kind of crime was treated: 1. by the media - in particular, 1991 and 2000 newspapers, radio, and television; 2. in police reports filed in 1998 at precincts of the city of São Paulo; and 3. in judicial lawsuits, according to a representative sampling of the five jury courtrooms in the city of São Paulo in 1997. We sought to learn how the media, so resistant at first, dealt with violence towards women at the onset of the 21st century, what the police reports recorded and how the murderers of women were sentenced. The complexity of our results reveals changes in certain segments and a simultaneous mechanism that feeds back and advances age-old violence in gender-based social relations.

I have traced, in general lines, the women’s condition in Brazil signalling the correlation between the attempts of changing the feminine subalternity through the new Civil Code. I have analysed how, while changing the “Law’s form” resulted in harmful reactions to the women as the growth of violence and their exclusion in the electoral representation fiel

A Jewish view on Paris - Abstract: Professor Eva Blay describes her impressions of a recent travel to Paris, focusing on her visits to the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire du Judaisme (MAHJ) and to the Musée Nissim de Camondo. These observations lead to the conclusion that antisemitism and prejudice are still alive in French society.

Gênero, resistência e identidade: imigrantes judeus no Brasil

Jews came to Brazil "to stay for good" from the first half of the 16th century. Yet settling in Brazil has been an ongoing project throughout the five centuries of Jewish immigration. They frequently had to hide their Jewish condition and, from the 18th century onwards, overcome political-ideological persecutions in order to safeguard their own identity and fight for their citizenship. How have these demands and struggles affected the relationships between men and women and among Jewish families? So how have these relationships been organized among Jews? Were inequalities brought along with their luggage? Or were the relations based on male dominance of women incorporated by Jewish immigrants after they arrived in Brazil? Can we affirm that relationships between Jewish men and women were generally egalitarian?"Vim para ficar": esta afirmação sintetiza o projeto dos imigrantes judeus que vieram para o Brasil.

Converting olefins to propene: Ethene to propene and olefin cracking

    Get PDF
Demand for propene as a petrochemical building block keeps growing, while its availability has been decreased by the adoption of shale gas resources, among others. Efforts to optimize its production by conventional means (including modified fluid catalytic cracking) and new on-purpose production technologies (including ethene to propene (ETP) and olefin cracking) are being pursued. This work reviews the progress made on olefin conversion processes, including the ETP reaction, which is still under development, and the cracking of butenes and higher olefins (C5–C8). The factors analyzed include the catalytic performance of different zeolite materials and their modifications to increase catalyst stability, yield, and selectivity to propene, as well as the effect of operating conditions, reaction thermodynamics, and mechanisms involved. The work is complemented by a survey of commercial technologies and developments on olefin conversion processes

Electrochemical identification of painters/workshops: The case of Valencian Renaissance-Baroque painters (ca. 1550- ca. 1670)

[EN] The voltammetry of immobilized particles (VIMP) methodology was applied to discriminate the oil painting production of a series of seven painters/workshops that worked in Valencia (Spain) between ca. 1530 and ca. 1650. When submicrosamples used for cross-section FESEM/EDX analysis were attached to graphite electrodes in contact with aqueous acetate buffer, well-defined responses were obtained. The reductive processes of lead pigments (lead white and lead-tin yellow) overlapped those associated to the lead soaps and other species resulting from the pigment-oil binder interaction in the sample. Such responses, which are theoretically modeled, were sensitive to changes in paint type and dose and thus provided a painter/workshop-characteristic voltammetric response defining a usable electrochemical fingerprint for authorship assessments.
