A Geant4 based engineering tool for Fresnel lenses
Geant4 is a Monte Carlo radiation transport toolkit that is becoming a tool
of generalized application in areas such as high-energy physics, nuclear
physics, astroparticle physics, or medical physics. Geant4 provides an optical
physics process category, allowing the simulation of the production and
propagation of light. Its capabilities are well tailored for the simulation of
optics systems namely in cosmic-rays experiments based in the detection of
Cherenkov and fluorescence light. The use of Geant4 as an engineering tool for
the optics design and simulation of Fresnel lens systems is discussed through a
specific example.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures, Proceedings of the 30th ICRC, International

A behavioral perspective on the effects of using performance measurement systems in the companies: Evidence from a case study
The effects of PMSs on the people’s behaviour represent a high degree of relevance in the context of an organization performance and success. Thus, motivational and behavioural consequences of performance measurements are far from being totally understood (Franco-Santos et al., 2012). This work project (WP) purposes going further regarding the consequences/effects on people’s behaviour of using PMSs in organizations. The researcher conducted 11 interviews to managers during a nine-month internship as a controller in a Portuguese multi-national company.
The evidence from this WP suggests that the way how managers understand a PMS determines a lot the way how they behave. Data also supports that PMSs influences in several ways motivation, perceptions, participation and job-related stress of managers
Natural language-based human-robot control
With the increase in the number of robots arriving at our homes, it is important
to find an easy and efficient way to communicate with them. Natural language is
the most natural form of communication between humans, so its use by users to
communicate with robots, with no knowledge of how they work, is an added value
to control them. We present a solution that allows us to interact with a robot
in a natural way, so it is easier for human-robot cooperation to happen. This
solution includes a method of transforming the information in natural language
into controls that a robot can perform. We implement this solution in the specific
case of indoor navigation. Finally, we evaluate the performance and interactivity
of our approach, by having users, without previous knowledge of robotic control,
controlling a robot in a simulated environment.
A língua natural é
Microstructure and Mechanical properties in Cu-17Al-11.4Mn shape memory alloys laser welded to 316L stainless steel
It is well known that NiTi alloys are the most widely used shape memory alloys nowadays, with a large number of possible applications, such as in the aerospace, auto motive, medical and civil industries. This large versatility makes them a very difficult alloy to replace.
However, there is a group of shape memory alloys which has been receiving ev ermore attention as a candidate to replace NiTi alloys, with many of the same applica tions. These are the Cu-Al-Mn alloys, a lightweight group of alloys recognized for their large versatility and lower cost, while managing to achieve the same or even better results than NiTi in certain scenarios, specially the Cu-17Al-11.4Mn (at. %) alloy. However,
little is known about how this alloy’s properties behave when welded to other materials, which leaves a lack of knowledge regarding this alloy’s versatility on this issue.
In this dissertation, this alloy laser welded to stainless steel to study the welding process’s effects on it together with the influence of the 316L low carbon stainless steel it is welded to. For this effect, the welded alloy was subjected to microstructural and mechanical testing, such as Scanning Electron Microscopy, Electron Backscatter Diffraction, Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy and X-ray Diffraction, as well as
Microhardness Mapping, Mechan- ical Cycling and Uniaxile Tensile Testing. This study shows that the welding process heavily influences the microstructural composition of the fusion zone, such as grain size and orientation while, on a mechanical level, also reinforcing the alloy’s superelastic properties together with the steel.É sabido que as ligas NiTi são as ligas de memória de forma mais amplamente utilizadas atualmente, com o seu grande número de possíveis aplicações, como é o caso nas indústrias aeroespacial, automóvel, médica e civil.

Using data mining to predict automobile insurance fraud
This thesis presents a study on the issue of Automobile Insurance Fraud. The purpose of
this study is to increase knowledge concerning fraudulent claims in the Portuguese market,
while raising awareness to the use of Data Mining techniques towards this, and other
similar problems.
We conduct an application of data mining techniques to the problem of predicting
automobile insurance fraud, shown to be of interest to insurance companies around the
world. We present fraud definitions and conduct an overview of existing literature on the
subject. Live policy and claim data from the Portuguese insurance market in 2005 is used to
train a Logit Regression Model and a CHAID Classification and Regression Tree.
The use of Data Mining tools and techniques enabled the identification of underlying fraud
patterns, specific to the raw data used to build the models. The list of potential fraud
indicators includes variables such as the policy’s tenure, the number of policy holders, not
admitting fault in the accident or fractioning premium payments semiannually. Other
variables such as the number of days between the accident and the patient filing the claim,
the client’s age, and the geographical location of the accident were also found to be relevant
in specific sub-populations of the used dataset.
Model variables and coefficients are interpreted comparatively and key performance results
are presented, including PCC, sensitivity, specificity and AUROC. Both the Logit Model
and the CHAID C&R Tree achieve fair results in predicting automobile insurance fraud in
the used dataset
