    Thermal performance of residential buildings in Lisbon with large glazing areas

    This work presents the results of an experimental study of residential buildings (multi-family apartments) with glazing areas greater than 75% of the total façade area, and for different solar exposures in Lisbon. These buildings were designed after the implementation of the first Portuguese Buildings Thermal Regulation and they are intrinsically related with the construction and architecture practiced in the last few years. The analysis includes the thermal behaviour of the apartments selected for the study during the summer (2007) and winter (2007-2008). During the monitoring process important data were obtained to assist in the understanding of the thermal performance of the observed units. The main thermal exchanges in a building generally take place through the transparent elements and these can be considered an element of great flexibility and adaptation to climatic variations. The mean of the interior temperature means in the different monitored compartments during the hot season was approximately 27ºC (some cases close to 29ºC), while in the cold season 21ºC (some cases close to 18ºC)

    This work presents the results of an experimental and numerical study of a residential buildings in a temperature climate, the paticularity of these bulding the large glazing areas around 65% to 85% of exterior façade. The thermal performance is presented and dicussed. The study was developed taking into account the implementation of monitoring during the summer and winter for a housing unit in an intermediate floor with only one façade in contact with the exterior (south façade) without solar protection by the glass (glazing area 80% exterior façade) located in Lisbon, Portugal (Latitude 40º N9; as well as detailed modeling of this unit using EnergyPlus for thermal simulation. The detailed model took into account the characteristics of the housing unit and the conditions under which it was monitored during the summer and winter. To simulate the detailed model under the monotored conditions the climatic data was cerefully introduced in the thermal simulation (climate file), the data was obtaines from the metereological stations of the National Laboratory for Energy and Geology (LNEG, Lisbon) for the same periods of the monitoring. From the detailed model different parametric variations were performed (summer and winter). Thus we obtained a set of effects that let you chek the parameters of major and minor influence on the thermal performance of housing units with large glazing areas situated in temperate climates. This work intends to provide tools and guidance to building designers with regard to the thermal performance of buildings

    Thermal Performance of Residential Buildings withe Large Glazing areas in Lisbon - Modelling and Validation

    This work aims to demonstrate the parameters of both major and minor influence on the thermal performance of units with large glazing areas, whether with one face or two exposed. The study was developed after a two year monitoring campaign in a group of 23 building apartments (the units have more than 60% of the main façades in glazing. The main goal was to carry out a representative model that can be validated by the experimental results in order develop a set of parametric studies for the Lisbon Climate. Part of the modeling included the development of detailed and simplified geometrical models related to the units selected for the study. Different parametric variations were performed (summer and winter) using the detailed and simplified geometrical models. These took into account the characteristics of each housing unit and the conditions under which they were monitored in summer and winter. The thermal simulation software EnergyPlus (with the calculation model present in this software) was used to simulate all solutions and models. Thus, the study allows not only comparison but also the evaluation and validation of the models

    Ultra-estrutura de espermatozóide e filogenia de serpentes (Lepidosauria, Squamata)

    Tese (doutorado)—Universidade de Brasília, Instituto de Ciências Biológicas, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Biologia Animal, 2007.A filogenia de serpentes tem sido inferida a partir de dados morfológicos e moleculares, entretanto, não há consenso entre as relações filogenéticas de serpentes. Recentemente a ultra-estrutura de espermatozóide tem sido utilizada para as reconstruções filogenéticas, por conter significante informação filogenética. Além da análise filogenética, o mapeamento de caracteres permite inferir o curso da evolução de caracteres. A evolução da ultra-estrutura de espermatozóide na família Boidae foi investigada, sendo encontradas novas sinapomorfias (Serpentes, Pythonidae + Boidae, Boidae, Epicrates cenchria e Boa constrictor). Os resultados indicaram melhor concordância entre a ultra-estrutura de espermatozóide e a filogenia morfológica. Ademais, análises filogenéticas foram realizadas utilizando dados de ultra-estrutura de espermatozóide, osteológicos, e moleculares. As análises corroboraram a divisão basal entre Scolecophidia e Alethinophidia e a hipótese que sugere que o fóssil Dinilysia patagonica seja táxon irmão de Alethinophidia. Os dados de ultra-estrutura de espermatozóide contêm informação filogenética e podem fornecer caracteres adicionais para as reconstruções filogenéticas entre as serpentes, entretanto, ainda se faz necessário aumentar a cobertura taxonômica, o número de caracteres, além de estudos sobre espermiogênese. Os resultados sugerem que os dados da ultra-estrutura de espermatozóide são tão bons quanto qualquer outro caráter, devido principalmente ao fato de que revelaram novas sinapomorfias de Serpentes. Enfim, acredito que a integração de biologia comparada, história evolutiva, e combinação de caracteres possam ajudar no esclarecimento das relações de parentesco de serpentes. _______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTThe snake relationships has been inferred from morphological and molecular data sets. However, there is no final conclusion about these relationships. The sperm ultrastructure has being used in phylogenetic analyses for a while, because it contains significant phylogenetic signal. Besides the phylogenetic analyses, mapping of characters permits inferences about the course of character evolution. We investigated the evolution of sperm ultrastructure among boids, and had found novel synapomorphies (Serpentes, Pythonidae + Boidae, Boidae, Epicrates cenchria e Boa constrictor). Our results indicate a better agreement between sperm ultrastructure and morphological phylogeny. In addition, we conducted a phylogenetic analyses based on sperm ultrastructural, osteological, and molecular characters. Our analyses corroborated the basal division of Scolecophidia and Alethinophidia, and hypothesis the support which the fossil Dinilysia patagonica is sister taxon of Alethinophidia. The sperm ultrastructure data contain phylogenetic information and may provide additional characters to phylogenetic analyses in snakes. However, it is still necessary to increase taxonomic sampling, number of characters, and spermiogenesis studies. Results suggest that sperm ultrastructure data are as good as any other character, due principally to the fact that they revealed novel synapomorphies of snakes. Finally, we conclude that the integration of comparative biology, evolution history, and combined analyses may provide insights into the snakes phylogenetic relationships

    Mestrado em Engenharia e Gestão IndustrialO principal objetivo de estudo deste trabalho foi analisar a viabilidade económica da empresa em abandonar o recurso a outsourcing para a termoformação das embalagens em blister. A empresa em questão teve que investir em muito equipamento mas, como conseguiu uma otimização da oferta das dimensões das embalagens bem como um aumento significativo da qualidade das mesmas, esse investimento, que não se revelava viável no início da análise, já trouxe um aumento considerável do volume de vendas de produtos embalados desta forma, associado ao fim das reclamações inerentes à falta de qualidade dos mesmos. Ao nível mundial as alterações das operações comerciais são enfatizadas pelas necessidades de um nível mais elevado de colaboração entre as funções de produção e comercialização, no sentido de responder às necessidades dos clientes, com alta satisfação. Assim, a relação existente entre o marketing e as unidades de produção são a chave para a melhoria do desempenho dos negócios. O desempenho dos negócios é constituído por alguns elementos, nomeadamente o desempenho interno, desenvolvimento de novos produtos, a qualidade do produto, aumento de vendas e participação de mercado. Os resultados demonstraram a viabilidade económica da empresa, através do abandono do outsourcing.The main objective of the study was to analyze the viability of the company on abandoning the use of outsourcing for thermoforming blister packaging. The company in question had to invest in a lot of equipment but once the optimization of the supply of package sizes as well as a significant increase in the quality of the same, has made this investment, which did not appear feasible at the beginning of the analysis, bring a considerable increase the volume of sales of products packaged this way, associated with the end of the complaints related to the lack of quality. The global changes of business operations are emphasized by the need for a higher level of collaboration between the functions of production and marketing, in order to meet the needs of customers with high satisfaction. Thus, the relationship between marketing and production units is the key to improved business performance. Business performance is comprised of several elements, namely, internal performance, new product development, product quality, increase sales and market share. The results demonstrated the viability of the company, by abandoning outsourcing

    Ultrastructural description and cytochemical study of the spermatozoon of Crotallus durissus (Squamata, Serpentes)

    The present study was undertaken to elucidate some aspects about the nature of the spermatozoon ultrastructure of Crotallus durissus using cytochemical methods. We also provide for the first time the ultrastructural description of this species spermatozoon. Cytochemical studies of spermatozoa have not been performed so far in the Serpentes, and species spermatozoon may prove helpful to better understand the reproductive biology of this group. Besides the synapomorphies of the Squamata and Serpentes, the C. durissus spermatozoon possess the following: circular acrosome tip; rounded perforatorium tip with a stopper-like basal modification; bilateral stratified laminar structures; central electron-dense structure within the proximal centriole; fibrous sheath extending until the level of the second mitochondrial ring; rounded mitochondria in cross-section, but with variable shape and organization in longitudinal and oblique sections, respectively; linear annulus; developed multilaminar membranes in the nuclear region and the midpiece. The formation of membrane filipin–sterol complexes occur sparsely along the head region, specially around the nucleus; the complexes were also present in the midpiece membrane and scarcely lining the flagellum. The complexes were present in the different layers of the multilaminar membranes. The ethanol-phosphotungstic acid (E-PTA) treatment releaved the presence of basic proteins in acrosome vesicle, pericentriolar material, peripheral fibers of the axoneme and fibrous sheath. The tannic acid technique revealed the microtubules of the centrioles and the axoneme; the extracellular tubules encircling the spermatozoa and those spread in the epididymal lumen were also observed. However, the immunocytochemistry assay using antibodies against alpha-tubulin and beta-tubulin, the primary microtubule monomers, does not support the existence of composition similarity between these tubular structures, since the extracellular tubules were not labeled by the antibodies. The results obtained in this work demonstrate that the utilization of electron microscopic techniques may provide relevant information to the study of ophidian reproductive biology, particularly in analyses concerning spermatozoal ultrastructure
