Effect of a commercial root growth enhancer on the turfgrass species "Lolium perenne" and the weed "Poa annua"
It is intended to check the performance of a root growth enhancer in order to promote “Lolium perenne” competiveness over “Poa annua”, during the overseeding cultural practice on “Cynodon dactylon” golf course fairway, as “P. annua” naturally germinates at the same time. Two equal laboratory experiments were conducted testing 10 doses of the root enhancer in both species. At the end of the experiments seedling growth and root and leaf dry weight were determined for both species. The tested product only promotes “L. perenne” competiveness in one experiment, therefore it cannot be concluded the root enhancer could be an effective weed control method
Lack of linkages among fruiting depth, weight, and maturity in irrigated truffle fungi marks the complexity of relationships among morphogenetic stages
The highly prized black truffle (Tuber melanosporum) has become a model species for ectomycorrhizal fungi biology. However, several questions concerning its reproductive phase remain unanswered. To provide new hypotheses on the fruitbody formation process, we have explored the causal links among development characters of black truffle fruitbodies that are primarily linked to either the mating process, fruitbody growing stage, or maturation. Path analysis was applied to test causal models outlining the relationships among fruitbody development characters such as fruiting depth, weight, shape, and spore maturity. These characters were investigated over a two-season survey and three soil typologies (plus peat-based substrate) under irrigated conditions. We found a clear and generalized relationship between fruitbody weight and shape. Among clusters of fruitbodies we found a positive relationship between the weight of the largest fruitbody and the weight of the remaining fruitbodies. However, no generalized relationships among characters linked to different development stages appeared. Our results were noticeably consistent across soil typologies, both for fruitbodies growing singly and in clusters, indicating that early-developing fruitbody characters did not influence characters linked to subsequent morphogenetic stages. The lack of links among stages opens new perspectives for pre-harvest quality management with stage-specific cultivation practices
adolescencia.Introduction: Physical fitness (PF) is a powerful marker of physical and mental health in youth. Participation in organized-sports is the most common form of leisure time physical activity, reporting many health benefits. The contribution of sport practice to PF depends on the specific characteristics of the activity. The aim of our study was to examine the association of sport characteristics with PF in healthy adolescents. Methods: A sample of 164 athletes (101 males) aged 13.9±0.3y from DADOS Study was selected. Muscular strength was measured with the handgrip and the standing long jump tests. Speed-agility was measured with the 4x10m shuttle run test. Cardiorespiratory fitness was measured with the 20m shuttle run test. Sport speciality and weekly sessions were self-reported by participants. Sport specialities were dichotomized as continuous and intermittent sports. Results: Boys showed higher levels of PF than girls for all studied variables, with no differences in the number of organized-sports weekly sessions (all P<0.05). Additional analysis according to sport speciality showed that athletes from continuous sports completed more weekly sessions compared with intermittent sports. Comparisons of sport speciality by gender revealed higher levels of muscular and cardiorespiratory fitness for boys and girls practising continuous sports (e.g. swimming, cycling) compared with intermittent sports (e.g. basketball) (all P<0.05). Conclusions: The main findings of our study indicate that continuous sports are more time demanding than intermittent ones. Moreover, athletes from continuous sports seem to be fitter than adolescents from intermittent sports. Further research is needed to clarify the reason of our results
Crystal-field mediated electronic transitions of EuS up to 35 GPa
An advanced experimental and theoretical model to explain the correlation between the electronic and local structure of Eu2+ in two different environments within a same compound, EuS, is presented. EuX monochalcogenides (X: O, S, Se, Te) exhibit anomalies in all their properties around 14 GPa with a semiconductor to metal transition. Although it is known that these changes are related to the 4f75d0 → 4f65d1 electronic transition, no consistent model of the pressure-induced modifications of the electronic structure currently exists. We show, by optical and x-ray absorption spectroscopy, and by ab initio calculations up to 35 GPa, that the pressure evolution of the crystal field plays a major role in triggering the observed electronic transitions from semiconductor to the half-metal and finally to the metallic state
Calidad del Agua de Consumo en el Gran La Plata, Buenos Aires, Argentina. El Problema de los Nitratos
This work establishes the variation of quality of drinking water in its physicist-chemist aspect, comparing results between samples taken in the year 1997 and 2008. It is notable the growth of nitrates in the year 2008 than 1997. The concentration of silica allows to distinguish the origin of consumption water: of river, mix water or underground water.

N₂-fixing tropical legume evolution: a contributor to enhanced weathering through the Cenozoic?
Fossil and phylogenetic evidence indicates legume-rich modern tropical forests replaced Late Cretaceous palm-dominated tropical forests across four continents during the early Cenozoic (58–42 Ma). Tropical legume trees can transform ecosystems via their ability to fix dinitrogen (N₂) and higher leaf N compared with non-legumes (35–65%), but it is unclear how their evolutionary rise contributed to silicate weathering, the long-term sink for atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO₂). Here we hypothesize that the increasing abundance of N₂-fixing legumes in tropical forests amplified silicate weathering rates by increased input of fixed nitrogen (N) to terrestrial ecosystems via interrelated mechanisms including increasing microbial respiration and soil acidification, and stimulating forest net primary productivity. We suggest the high CO₂ early Cenozoic atmosphere further amplified legume weathering. Evolution of legumes with high weathering rates was probably driven by their high demand for phosphorus and micronutrients required for N₂-fixation and nodule formation
Chemical control of the invasive weed Araujia sericifera Brot.
[EN] Araujia sericifera Brot. is a weed that was introduced in Europe from South America as an ornamental species. It has had a successfully adaptation to citrus orchards management in the Mediterranean area, especially on poorly weed managed or abandoned ones. The objective of this study was to determine the efficacy of the authorized herbicides in Spain for citrus against A. sericifera and a Natural product under development. The study was conducted in a controlled environmental chamber where the weed was cultivated in pots. The whole study consisted in 2 experiments applying 11 pre-emergent herbicides and mixtures and 3 experiments applying 14 post-emergent herbicides and mixtures in two different phenological stages. In conclusion, post-emergent control was better than pre-emergent treatments, especially with contact herbicides (pelargonic acid, diquat, Natural and pyraflufen ethyl). However, the penoxsulam + florasulam combination applied to the soil was very effective. The Natural herbicide was just effective when it was applied on post-emergence of the weed.[ES] La mala hierba Araujia sericifera Brot. fue introducida en Europa como especie ornamental procedente de Sudamérica.
