    Electrostatic fluidized bed deposition of a high performance polymeric powder on metallic substrates

    The electrostatic fluidized bed deposition of a single-layer PPA 571 coating onto low carbon steel rods is reported. A full factorial experimental design was developed in order to study the influence of several operative variables on the effectiveness of the coating process and on the coating thickness and uniformity. The operative variables included exposure time, air flow, the applied voltage, attitude, and the radial and vertical location of the work-piece in the fluid bed. After the experimentation, several process maps were developed as a support to identify the best way to lead the coating process. Finally, by using a statistical approach, the reliability and repeatability of the coating process was also established. Experimental trends were consistent with theoretical expectation. A significant growth in achievable coating thickness was obtained by increasing voltage and air flow. Furthermore, at higher values of exposure time and applied voltage, relevant back ionization phenomena occurred, which simultaneously caused a top limit in coating thickness and a worsening of surface finishing.     On Mixed Convection in a Horizontal Channel, Viscous Dissipation and Flow Duality

    The conditions defining a stationary fluid flow may lead to a multiplicity of solutions. This circumstance is widely documented in the literature when mixed convection in a vertical channel or duct is accompanied by an important effect of viscous dissipation. Usually, there are double stationary solutions with a parallel velocity field which satisfy given temperature boundary conditions and with a prescribed mass flow rate. However, in a vertical internal flow, the dual solutions can be determined only numerically as they do not have a closed analytical form. This study shows that, in a horizontal channel, stationary mixed convection with viscous dissipation shows up dual flow branches whose mathematical expressions can be determined analytically.     The helium trimer with soft-core potentials

    The helium trimer is studied using two- and three-body soft-core potentials. Realistic helium-helium potentials present an extremely strong short-range repulsion and support a single, very shallow, bound state. The description of systems with more than two helium atoms is difficult due to the very large cancellation between kinetic and potential energy. We analyze the possibility of describing the three helium system in the ultracold regime using a gaussian representation of a widely used realistic potential, the LM2M2 interaction. However, in order to describe correctly the trimer ground state a three-body force has to be added to the gaussian interaction. With this potential model the two bound states of the trimer and the low energy scattering helium-dimer phase shifts obtained with the LM2M2 potential are well reproduced.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Few-Body System

    Automatic grid construction for few-body quantum mechanical calculations

    An algorithm for generating optimal nonuniform grids for solving the two-body Schr\"odinger equation is developed and implemented. The shape of the grid is optimized to accurately reproduce the low-energy part of the spectrum of the Schr\"odinger operator. Grids constructed this way are applicable to more complex few-body systems where the number of grid points is a critical limitation to numerical accuracy. The utility of the grid generation for improving few-body calculations is illustrated through an application to bound states of He trimers

    Dissipation instability of Couette-like adiabatic flows in a plane channel

    The mixed convection flow in a plane channel with adiabatic boundaries is examined. The boundaries have an externally prescribed relative velocity defining a Couette-like setup for the flow. A stationary flow regime is maintained with a constant velocity difference between the boundaries, considered as thermally insulated. The effect of viscous dissipation induces a heat source in the flow domain and, hence, a temperature gradient. The nonuniform temperature distribution causes, in turn, a buoyancy force and a combined forced and free flow regime. Dual mixed convection flows occur for a given velocity difference. Their structure is analysed where, in general, only one branch of the dual flows is compatible with the Oberbeck-Boussinesq approximation, for realistic values of the Gebhart number. A linear stability analysis of the basic stationary flows with viscous dissipation is carried out. The stability eigenvalue problem is solved numerically, leading to the determination of the neutral stability curves and the critical values of the P\'eclet number, for different Gebhart numbers. An analytical asymptotic solution in the special case of perturbations with infinite wavelength is also developed.Comment: 24 pages, 11 figure

    A Kohonen SOM architecture for intrusion detection on in-vehicle communication networks

    The diffusion of connected devices in modern vehicles involves a lack in security of the in-vehicle communication networks such as the controller area network (CAN) bus. The CAN bus protocol does not provide security systems to counter cyber and physical attacks. Thus, an intrusion-detection system to identify attacks and anomalies on the CAN bus is desirable. In the present work, we propose a distance-based intrusion-detection network aimed at identifying attack messages injected on a CAN bus using a Kohonen self-organizing map (SOM) network. It is a power classifier that can be trained both as supervised and unsupervised learning. SOM found broad application in security issues, but was never performed on in-vehicle communication networks. We performed two approaches, first using a supervised X-Y fused Kohonen network (XYF) and then combining the XYF network with a K-means clustering algorithm (XYF-K) in order to improve the efficiency of the network. The models were tested on an open source dataset concerning data messages sent on a CAN bus 2.0B and containing large traffic volume with a low number of features and more than 2000 different attack types, sent totally at random. Despite the complex structure of the CAN bus dataset, the proposed architectures showed a high performance in the accuracy of the detection of attack messages

    Intrusion detection for in-vehicle communication networks: An unsupervised kohonen SOM approach

    The diffusion of embedded and portable communication devices on modern vehicles entails new security risks since in-vehicle communication protocols are still insecure and vulnerable to attacks. Increasing interest is being given to the implementation of automotive cybersecurity systems. In this work we propose an efficient and high-performing intrusion detection system based on an unsupervised Kohonen Self-Organizing Map (SOM) network, to identify attack messages sent on a Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. The SOM network found a wide range of applications in intrusion detection because of its features of high detection rate, short training time, and high versatility. We propose to extend the SOM network to intrusion detection on in-vehicle CAN buses. Many hybrid approaches were proposed to combine the SOM network with other clustering methods, such as the k-means algorithm, in order to improve the accuracy of the model. We introduced a novel distance-based procedure to integrate the SOM network with the K-means algorithm and compared it with the traditional procedure. The models were tested on a car hacking dataset concerning traffic data messages sent on a CAN bus, characterized by a large volume of traffic with a low number of features and highly imbalanced data distribution. The experimentation showed that the proposed method greatly improved detection accuracy over the traditional approach

    Wood-Reinforced Polyphthalamide Resins: MultiFunctional Composite Coating for Metal Substrates

    Protective layers were deposited on aluminum substrates by dipping them inside a fluidized bed (FB) of wood and polyphthalamide powders. The experimental investigation looked into the influence of the main process parameters (number and composition of superimposed layers, heating temperature, and dipping time) on the visual appearance, scratch adhesion, wear resistance, and thermal insulation of the resulting coatings. Micromechanical and tribological responses of the coatings were significantly improved by the effect of the wooden particles dispersed inside the polyphthalamide binder. An improvement of the thermal insulation was also achieved whatever the setting of the process parameters. Further, the coatings displayed good adhesion to the substrate and wear endurance

    Microstructural and tribological comparison of HVOF-sprayed and post-treated M-Mo-Cr-Si (M = Co, Ni) alloy coatings

    High velocity oxygen-fuel (HVOF)-sprayed wear resistant Co-28%Mo-17%Cr-3%Si and Ni-32%Mo-15%Cr-3%Si coatings, both as-sprayed and after heat treatments at 600 degrees C for 1 h, have been studied. Particularly, their dry sliding wear behaviour has been compared by ball-on-disk tests against different counterbodies (100Cr6 steel and sintered alumina), and differences were discussed based on microstructural characteristics and micromechanical properties (Vickers microindentation and scratch test responses). As-sprayed coatings contain oxide stringers, are mostly amorphous and display rather low Vickers microhardness (about 7.4 GPa for the Co-based and 6.2 GPa for the Ni-based), toughness and elastic modulus. Heat-treated ones display sub-micrometric crystalline intermetallics, improving hardness (9.6 GPa and 7.4 GPa, respectively) and elastic modulus. Scratch tests indicate greater brittleness of the Ni-based alloy (higher tendency to cracking). Due to low hardness and toughness, both as-sprayed coatings undergo wear loss against steel and alumina counterparts. The more plastic Co-based alloy undergoes higher adhesive wear against steel and lower abrasive wear against alumina; the situation is reversed for the Ni-based alloy.
