Selection via simulated individual BLUP based on family genotypic effects in sugarcane.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi propor uma nova estratégia de seleção nos estádios iniciais do desenvolvimento da cana-de-açúcar, utilizando-se a metodologia BLUP individual simulado (BLUPIS) que promove a distribuição dinâmica dos indivíduos selecionados em cada família de irmãos-completos, usando BLUP como base para os efeitos genotípicos da família e para os efeitos de parcela. O método proposto se aplica a famílias de irmãos-completos simples ou obtidas de cruzamentos dialélicos desbalanceados ou balanceados, famílias de meios-irmãos e famílias de autofecundação. Por meio do BLUPIS, indica-se o número de indivíduos a ser selecionado por família, o número total de clones a ser avançado e o número de famílias a contribuir com indivíduos selecionados. A validação do método propiciou uma correlação de 0,96 entre o BLUPIS e o BLUP verdadeiro. Além disso, o BLUPIS permite identificar em qual repetição encontram-se os melhores indivíduos de cada família

Off-axis retrieval of orbital angular momentum of light stored in cold atoms

We report on the storage of orbital angu- lar momentum (OAM) of light of a Laguerre-Gaussian mode in an ensemble of cold cesium atoms and its re- trieval along an axis different from the incident light beam. We employed a time-delayed four-wave mixing configuration to demonstrate that at small angle (2o), after storage, the retrieved beam carries the same OAM as the one encoded in the input beam. A calculation based on mode decomposition of the retrieved beam over the Laguerre-Gaussian basis is in agreement with the experimental observations done at small angle values. However, the calculation shows that the OAM retrieving would get lost at larger angles, reducing the fidelity of such storing-retrieving process. In addition, we have also observed that by applying an external magnetic field to the atomic ensemble the retrieved OAM presents Larmor oscillations, demonstrating the possibility of its manipulation and off-axis retrieval.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure

Dermatite ulcerosa em bovinos provocada por Stephanofilaria.

Em um rebanho leiteiro localizado na cidade de São Carlos-SP, foram constatados cinco casos de dermatite ulcerosa tendo como agente etiologico a Stephanofilaria spp. As lesões se localizaram na inserção da cauda, ubere, coxa e graupa. O diagnóstico foi feito por esfregaço e impressões obtidas de raspado e pele da borda da ulcera, coradas com Giemsa e também com vermelho Congo sendo que este permitiu melhor visualização do parasita. O tratamento foi feito com tricloforn, obtendo-se a cura dos animais em quinze dias

GHASP: an Hα\alpha kinematic survey of spiral galaxies - X. Surface photometry, decompositions and the Tully-Fisher relation in the Rc-band

We present Rc-band surface photometry for 170 of the 203 galaxies in GHASP, Gassendi H-Alpha survey of SPirals, a sample of late-type galaxies for which high-resolution Fabry-Perot H{\alpha} maps have previously been obtained. Our data set is constructed by new Rc-band observations taken at the Observatoire de Haute-Provence (OHP), supplemented with Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) archival data, obtained with the purpose of deriving homogeneous photometric profiles and parameters. Our results include Rc-band surface brightness profiles for 170 galaxies and $ugriz$ profiles for 108 of these objects. We catalogue several parameters of general interest for further reference, such as total magnitude, effective radius and isophotal parameters -- magnitude, position angle, ellipticity and inclination. We also perform a structural decomposition of the surface brightness profiles using a multi-component method in order to separate disks from bulges and bars, and to observe the main scaling relations involving luminosities, sizes and maximum velocities. We determine the Rc-band Tully Fisher relation using maximum velocities derived solely from H$\alpha$ rotation curves for a sample of 80 galaxies, resulting in a slope of $-8.1 \pm 0.5$, zero point of $-3.0 \pm 1.0$ and an estimated intrinsic scatter of $0.28 \pm 0.07$. We note that, different from the TF-relation in the near-infrared derived for the same sample, no change in the slope of the relation is seen at the low-mass end (for galaxies with $V_{max} < 125$ km/s). We suggest that this different behaviour of the Tully Fisher relation (with the optical relation being described by a single power-law while the near-infrared by two) may be caused by differences in the stellar mass to light ratio for galaxies with $V_{max} < 125$ km/s.Comment: 17 pages, 11 figure

Entropy, diffusivity and the energy landscape of a water-like fluid

Molecular dynamics simulations and instantaneous normal mode (INM) analysis of a fluid with core-softened pair interactions and water-like liquid-state anomalies are performed to obtain an understanding of the relationship between thermodynamics, transport properties and the poten- tial energy landscape. Rosenfeld-scaling of diffusivities with the thermodynamic excess and pair correlation entropy is demonstrated for this model. The INM spectra are shown to carry infor- mation about the dynamical consequences of the interplay between length scales characteristic of anomalous fluids, such as bimodality of the real and imaginary branches of the frequency distribu- tion. The INM spectral information is used to partition the liquid entropy into two contributions associated with the real and imaginary frequency modes; only the entropy contribution from the imaginary branch captures the non-monotonic behaviour of the excess entropy and diffusivity in the anomalous regime of the fluid
