ICT Diffusion, inward foreign direct investment, and entrepreneurship in developing countries:a research note
The last decades have stablished the fundamental importance of technological progress for economic growth and wealth creation. Most new technology is created in developed countries.
For these countries, the fundamental problem for growth is to harness the economic value of
new inventions by converting them into new products, processes and organizational means.
Entrepreneurship plays a fundamental role in this course of events (Shane 2001; Michelacci
2003; Acs et al. 2004; 2009).
In developing countries the diffusion of new technologies plays an essential role in
fostering growth
The Forking Paths revisited: experimenting on interactive film
Based on the triad film-interactivity-experimentation, the applied research project The
Forking Paths, developed at the Centre for Research in Arts and Communication
(CIAC), endeavours to find alternative narrative forms in the field of Cinema and,
more specifically, in the subfield of Interactive Cinema. The films in the project The
Forking Paths invest in the interconnectivity between the film narrative and the
viewer, who is given the possibility to be more active and engaged. At same time, the
films undertake a research on the development of audio-visual language. The project
is available at an online platform, which aims to foster the creation and web hosting
of other Interactive Cinema projects in its different variables. This article focusses on
the three films completed up to the moment: Haze, The Book of the Dead, and Waltz.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Agent-based simulation of consumer occupancy distribution in shopping centers
Where are the most frequented areas inside a shopping center? The answer to this question can help us find the optimal places to put advertisement, set its price, or even optimize the locations of the stores. This dissertation studies the applicability of simulation techniques to the clients’ circulation inside a shopping center. For that a software capable of integrating the various techniques and showing the results of the simulations is built. We use the agent-based simula-tions where the consumers will be emulated by autonomous entities called agents who have a set of characteristics and behaviors that support their decisions. The navigation of the agents inside the shopping center and the search for the best path is done by the A* algorithm. To show the distribution of the occupancy of the consumers within the shopping center, heat maps are used with a color scale ranging from yellow, meaning less frequented areas, to red, meaning the most frequented areas. This software not only proved to be able to find the most fre-quented areas, but also find them for the various segments of the population, which allow us to know what segment of the population should the advertisement, of the different areas of the shopping center, target.
Globalization trends and regional development - dynamics of FDI and human capital flows
This is a post-peer-review, pre-copyedit version of an article published in [European Journal of Development Research]. The definitive publisher-authenticated version [European Journal of Development Research 26, 160-161 (January 2014)] is available online at: http://www.palgravejournals.com/ejdr/journal/v26/n1/full/ejdr201354a.htmlApparently rendered irrelevant by globalization, regions have been rediscovered as a force in economic and social development by both scholars and policymakers. Localized inter-personal ties and networks are seen as important resources (Woolcock and Narayan, 2000), and the local supply of entrepreneurs has emerged as a key determinant of future economic growth (Chatterji et al, 2013)
População e Métodos: A
um total de 40 indivÃduos que cumpriam
os critérios de inclusão, a realizar
tratamento em duas clÃnicas de hemodiálise,
foram aplicadas, as duas Escalas
de avaliação de aceitação da incapacidade.
Resultados: Os resultados para
a fiabilidade dos dados obtidos com
cada Escala, nesta amostra, utilizando
o alfa de Cronbach, foram os seguintes:
0,795 para a Escala de Felton (AIS) e
0,952 para a Escala de Linkowski
(ADS). Os valores de alfa obtidos estão
acima do valor considerado aceitável
Theory of planned behavior and entrepreneurial intentions of sport sciences students: Implications for curriculum
Abstract This study tests Ajzen’s1 Theory of Planned Behavior in sport sciences with the purpose of determining which variables most influence students’ entrepreneurial intentions. Although this theory has been employed to explain entrepreneurial intentions within different contexts, the context of sport sciences has not been addressed. A sample of 379 sport sciences students were administered the Entrepreneurial Intentions Questionnaire and results were analyzed using structural equation modeling. Results indicate that both perceived attitudes and perceived behavior control have significant positive impacts on entrepreneurial intentions, while the impact of subjective norms is negative. Several suggestions to improve curriculum design and teaching in order to promote entrepreneurial intentions and behaviors are provided

Portuguese health care providers’ knowledge, attitudes, and acceptability of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis
Introduction: Evidence shows that pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is highly effective in preventing sexually acquired human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Whilst its implementation is limited to the US and some countries where demonstration projects have taken place, PrEP has recently been introduced in Portugal. Successful implementation of PrEP requires actively engaging and involving of health care providers (HCP) in Portugal, yet little is known about their knowledge, attitudes, and acceptability towards this novel intervention.
Material and methods: An online survey of convenience-sampled Portuguese HCP was conducted in January 2016, prior to PrEP implementation, to determine their knowledge, attitudes, practices, and acceptability of PrEP.
Results: A total of 96 respondents nationwide took part in the study, of whom the majority were females (60.3%), specialist physicians/junior doctors (39%/53%), working in the field of HIV for 1 to 5 years (42.3%). Over half (51%) considered having an average or high knowledge of PrEP, and this was more common amongst infectious diseases specialists. Major concerns regarding PrEP implementation included a rise in sexually transmitted infections and increased antiretroviral resistance. Despite only 31.3% being asked about PrEP in the future, the majority (75%) considered that PrEP should be made available in Portugal. The main barrier to PrEP implementation was the lack of knowledge and information to HCP.
Conclusions: Portuguese HCP demonstrated variable degrees of knowledge around PrEP, yet most would support its introduction in the country. Concerns were raised about potential consequences of PrEP roll out as well as implementation challenges that ought to be addressed before PrEP introduction.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
