    Numerical Analysis of the Double Scaling Limit in the IIB Matrix Model

    The bosonic IIB matrix model is studied using a numerical method. This model contains the bosonic part of the IIB matrix model conjectured to be a non-perturbative definition of the type IIB superstring theory. The large N scaling behavior of the model is shown performing a Monte Carlo simulation. The expectation value of the Wilson loop operator is measured and the string tension is estimated.     Dynamic Dilatonic Domain Walls

    Motivated by the ``universe as a brane'' idea, we investigate the motion of a (D−2)(D-2)-brane (or domain wall) that couples to bulk matter. Usually one would expect the spacetime outside such a wall to be time dependent however we show that in certain cases it can be static, with consistency of the Israel equations yielding relationships between the bulk metric and matter that can be used as ans\"atze to solve the Einstein equations. As a concrete model we study a domain wall coupled to a bulk dilaton with Liouville potentials for the dilaton both in the bulk and on the wall. The bulk solutions we find are all singular but some have black hole or cosmological horizons, beyond which our solutions describe domain walls moving in time dependent bulks. A significant period of world volume inflation occurs if the potential on the wall is not too steep; in some cases the bulk also inflates (with the wall comoving) while in others the wall moves relative to a non-inflating bulk.     MeV Tau Neutrino in Gauge Mediated Supersymmetry Breaking Model

    A supersymmetric model which naturally accommodates MeV tau neutrino within the framework of gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking is described. The lepton number violation is originally introduced in the messenger sector of the theory. A large slepton-Higgs mixing mass and a small lepton-higgsino mixing mass are generated at one-loop. Scalar tau neutrino has non-vanishing vacuum expectation value. These result in a non-zero \nu_{\tau} mass which is in the range of (1-10) MeV.Comment: 18 pages, latex, two figure

    Noncommutative Electromagnetism As A Large N Gauge Theory

    We map noncommutative (NC) U(1) gauge theory on R^d_C X R^{2n}_{NC} to U(N -> \infty) Yang-Mills theory on R^d_C, where R^d_C is a d-dimensional commutative spacetime while R^{2n}_{NC} is a 2n-dimensional NC space. The resulting U(N) Yang-Mills theory on R^d_C is equivalent to that obtained by the dimensional reduction of (d+2n)-dimensional U(N) Yang-Mills theory onto R^d_C. We show that the gauge-Higgs system (A_\mu,\Phi^a) in the U(N -> \infty) Yang-Mills theory on R^d_C leads to an emergent geometry in the (d+2n)-dimensional spacetime whose metric was determined by Ward a long time ago. In particular, the 10-dimensional gravity for d=4 and n=3 corresponds to the emergent geometry arising from the 4-dimensional N=4 vector multiplet in the AdS/CFT duality. We further elucidate the emergent gravity by showing that the gauge-Higgs system (A_\mu,\Phi^a) in half-BPS configurations describes self-dual Einstein gravity.Comment: 25 pages; More clarifications, to appear in Eur.     This study seeks to develop a critical understanding of marketing measures. Marketing measures inform a variety of marketing practices and have been subject to ethical, discursive and epistemological critique. Informed by a range of theoretical work, this study sheds light on the construction of a key marketing measure in digital advertising: viewability. It shows how a range of competing interests can be mobilized and aligned; how an object of interest can be stabilized; and how standards for measurement can be reconciled. Across this account, we can see how issues of accuracy, ideology and ethics are bracketed off as participants agree on which things matter and which things count

    Large-scale pathways-based association study in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

    Sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a devastating neurodegenerative disease, most likely results from complex genetic and environmental interactions. Although a number of association studies have been performed in an effort to find genetic components of sporadic ALS, most of them resulted in inconsistent findings due to a small number of genes investigated in relatively small sample sizes, while the replication of results was rarely attempted. Defects in retrograde axonal transport, vesicle trafficking and xenobiotic metabolism have been implicated in neurodegeneration and motor neuron death both in human disease and animal models. To assess the role of common genetic variation in these pathways in susceptibility to sporadic ALS, we performed a pathway-based candidate gene case-control association study with replication. Furthermore, we determined reliability of whole genome amplified DNA in a large-scale association study. In the first stage of the study, 1277 putative functional and tagging SNPs in 134 genes spanning 8.7 Mb were genotyped in 822 British sporadic ALS patients and 872 controls using whole genome amplified DNA. To detect variants with modest effect size and discriminate among false positive findings 19 SNPs showing a trend of association in the initial screen were genotyped in a replication sample of 580 German sporadic ALS patients and 361 controls. We did not detect strong evidence of association with any of the genes investigated in the discovery sample (lowest uncorrected P-value 0.00037, lowest permutation corrected P-value 0.353). None of the suggestive associations was replicated in a second sample, further excluding variants with moderate effect size. We conclude that common variation in the investigated pathways is unlikely to have a major effect on susceptibility to sporadic ALS. The genotyping efficiency was only slightly decreased (∌1%) and genotyping quality was not affected using whole genome amplified DNA. It is reliable for large scale genotyping studies of diseases such as ALS, where DNA sample collections are limited because of low disease prevalence and short survival time. © 2007 The Author(s)

    SUSY GUT Model Building

    I discuss an evolution of SUSY GUT model building, starting with the construction of 4d GUTs, to orbifold GUTs and finally to orbifold GUTs within the heterotic string. This evolution is an attempt to obtain realistic string models, perhaps relevant for the LHC.     Brane World Dynamics and Conformal Bulk Fields

    In the Randall-Sundrum scenario we investigate the dynamics of a spherically symmetric 3-brane world when matter fields are present in the bulk. To analyze the 5-dimensional Einstein equations we employ a global conformal transformation whose factor characterizes the Z2Z_2 symmetric warp. We find a new set of exact dynamical collapse solutions which localize gravity in the vicinity of the brane for a stress-energy tensor of conformal weight -4 and a warp factor that depends only on the coordinate of the fifth dimension. Geometries which describe the dynamics of inhomogeneous dust and generalized dark radiation on the brane are shown to belong to this set. The conditions for singular or globally regular behavior and the static marginally bound limits are discussed for these examples. Also explicitly demonstrated is complete consistency with the effective point of view of a 4-dimensional observer who is confined to the brane and makes the same assumptions about the bulk degrees of freedom.Comment: 26 pages, latex, no figures.     Taking off the square root of Nambu-Goto action and obtaining Filippov-Lie algebra gauge theory action

    We propose a novel prescription to take off the square root of Nambu-Goto action for a p-brane, which generalizes the Brink-Di Vecchia-Howe-Tucker or also known as Polyakov method. With an arbitrary decomposition as d+n=p+1, our resulting action is a modified d-dimensional Polyakov action which is gauged and possesses a Nambu n-bracket squared potential. We first spell out how the (p+1)-dimensional diffeomorphism is realized in the lower dimensional action. Then we discuss a possible gauge fixing of it to a direct product of dd-dimensional diffeomorphism and n-dimensional volume preserving diffeomorphism. We show that the latter naturally leads to a novel Filippov-Lie n-algebra based gauge theory action in d-dimensions.Comment: 1+13 pages, No figure; Expanded, published version. Title change
